Objective
Be the player who has accumulated the most gold by the end of the game, among the players still in contention.
Setup
-
Shuffle the "route" cards and place them in the center of the table. They form the draw pile.
-
Remove 4 cards from the draw pile at random, without looking at them. These cards will not be used during the round.
-
Deal each player two cards, which they keep in hand, and one card, which they place face down in front of them without looking at it. The cards placed in front of the players represent their treasure.
-
Turn over the first card of the draw pile and place it in the center of the table. This is the start of the route (the route is made up of the cards played during the game).
-
Each player announces the total sum of gold shown on their two cards. The player with the most gold goes first. In case of a tie, determine the first player at random.
Turn Sequence
-
The active player plays a card from their hand onto the route.
-
They then draw a card from the draw pile to bring their hand back up to 2 cards.
-
End of turn. The active player changes in a clockwise direction.
Conditions for Playing a Card
To play a card, the active player MUST overlay one of the cards from their hand onto one of the 2 ends of the route. To do this, they overlay one of the two squares on their card onto the square at the selected end.
Watch out: the colors of the associated squares must match (except for multicolored squares).
Then, the active player applies, if possible, the effect of their overlaid square and ends their turn by completing their hand. It is then the turn of the next player, in a clockwise direction, to begin their turn.
Special case: If you cannot play any of your cards, you have suffered an ambush and lose the round. Your cards are then removed from the game and the round continues for the other players. If only one player remains, they immediately win the current round.
Good to know: you may turn a card over, and so play it upside down!
Course of the Game
The game is played over 1 or 2 winning rounds; decide which before starting the game.
With 2 players, the round ends when a player takes the last card of the draw pile.
With 3 or 4 players, you will go through several draw-pile turns before finishing a round. A round with 3 players is completed with 1 draw-pile turn, while a round with 4 players is completed with 2 draw-pile turns. Once the draw-pile turns have been completed, the end of the round is triggered.
Draw-Pile Turn
When a player draws the last card of the central deck, follow these steps:
-
Place the "goblin turn counter" card face up next to the deck, or, if it is already present, turn it over.
-
Take all the cards from the route and the discarded cards, EXCEPT the last one that was just played, then reshuffle them to form a new draw pile.
-
The round continues.
End of Round
The round ends when a player takes the last card of the draw pile and the number of draw-pile turns required for the number of players has been completed.
The players then count their total gold score in front of them by revealing their face-down treasure cards, and add to it the gold value of their 2 cards in hand. The player with the highest score wins. In case of a tie, the player with the most cards wins. If the tie persists, start a new round.
If you decided to play a single winning round, the winning player wins the game.
Playing to 2 Winning Rounds
At the end of a round, the losing players take all of the cards played in front of them and remove one, of their choice, which they place face down next to the winning player. This card does not count for the rest of the game; it is there only to indicate that this player has already won once.
To replace this card, add to the draw pile (without looking at it) one of the 8 cards that were removed during step 2 of setup. Shuffle the cards and form the draw pile.
Go directly to step 3 of setup.
If a player wins a second round, they turn over their treasure card and win the game!
