Game Idea - The Case
Unusual Suspects is a cooperative party game: players win or lose together. A player will take the role of a witness, while others will take the role of detectives. The witness is the only one who knows the identity of the thief. He/she will help the detectives eliminate the innocent suspects from the investigation by answering their questions. But pay attention! Questions won't never concern the physical aspects of the guilty, so the answer won't never be obvious. You will have to imagine and guess suspects' nature, habits, tastes only by looking at them!
Componenti
- 53 Suspect Cards
- 78 Question Cards
- 12 Guilty Cards
- 1 Yes Card
- 1 No Card
- 1 Investigation Pad
- 1 Witness Cap
- 1 Rulebook
Preparazione - La Retata
- Shuffle the Question Cards and place them face down on the table to form a deck.
- Shuffle the Guilty Cards and place them face down on the table to form a deck.
- Shuffle the Suspect Cards, draw and place 12 cards face up on the table to form a 3x4 grid. Put the remaining Suspect Cards back in the box: they won't be used during this game.
Choose who will play the role of the Witness, who:
- places the Yes Card and the No Card in front of him.
- takes a sheet from the Investigation Pad and signs the players name.
- wears the Witness Cap: nobody can see where the Witness look at.
- draws and secretly look at one card. That card shows the guilty position on the suspects grid.
Game Flow
The game is played in several rounds up to a maximum of 11 rounds. Each round is divided in 3 phases: the Questioning, the Trial, the Verdict.
The Questioning
- A player from the Investigative Team draws one Question Cards from the deck and reads it out loud.
- The Witness must answer YES or NO, then places the Question Card face up below the Yes or No Card, according to the answer.
ATTENTION: THE WITNESS CANNOT GIVE ANY KIND OF INFORMATION THAN THE ANSWER. NO OTHER WORDS, NO GESTURES, NO SIGNALS ARE ALLOWED. DETECTIVES CAN TALK AND DISCUSS BETWEEN THEM ONLY AFTER THE WITNESS HAS GIVEN HIS ANSWER.
The Trial
- Detectives discuss about what suspects correspond or not to the answer. They MUST eliminate at least one suspect who doesn't correspond to the answer, and they flip that Suspect Card face down. To eliminate a suspect, all the detectives, or at least the majority of them, must agree.
ATTENTION: AFTER A QUESTION, THE TEAM MUST EXCLUDE ONE SUSPECT AT LEAST.
- If the eliminated suspect is innocent, nothing happens. If it is the guilty, the Witness must immediately say it by revealing the Guilty Card. The game is over. (See end of the game)
- During this phase, the Investigative Team can eliminate how many suspects they want, but always at least one.
- When the Team decides to stop eliminating suspects, this phase ends.
The Verdict
- Players write down on the Investigation Pad how many Suspect Cards they have eliminated during this round on the corresponding line (only the cards eliminated during the current round).
- Multiply the round number and the eliminated cards number and write the result on the next box. This represents the Time spent to investigate.
ATTENTION: THE MORE QUESTIONS YOU MAKE, THE MORE TIME YOU SPEND!
Now you can play another round. Example: The Witness answered "No" to the question: "Does he/she live with the parents?", and placed the Question Card under the No Card. Players of the team decide to eliminate 3 suspects who, in their opinion, still live with their parents, and turn their card face down. None of them is the guilty, so they write on the Investifation Pad their points: they eliminated 3 suspects after the first question, so they used 3 minutes of Time.
End of the Game
- If the detectives eliminate the guilty, players lose the game. Write your failure on the Investigation Pad.
- If the detectives eliminate all 11 innocent suspects and the guilty is the only card that remains face up in the grid, they end the investigation with success and win the game.
- Add together all the numbers of the last column of the Investigation Pad. The result represents the total Time spent to investigate. The less time players spent, the better they are.
- Keep the sheets in the box to remember your best investigations!
Variant
Competitive Game (better from 6 players)
This variant is similar to the normal game with the following exceptions:
- Players are divided in two team, the game is played in several rounds called Investigations.
- And the game is won by the first team that scores a certain amount of points.
- Choose two teams. Each team chooses its Witness. Witnesses draw and secretly look at one Guilty Card. The guilty is the same for both teams. Witnesses wear the Cap one after the other when they look at the suspects (they also can wear two different caps...)
- Decide all together how many points are necessary to win the game (10 points for a faster game, 15 points for a medium game, 20 points for a longer game).
- Choose the starting team. A team plays the Questioning phase and the Trial phase as usual, but players take the eliminated Suspect Cards from the table, instead of turning them face down, and collect them. Each collected cards counts as 1 Victory Points.
- When a team finishes its Trial phase, it's up to the other team.
- Rounds goes on until the Investigation ends, i.e. A team eliminates the guilty or a team eliminates all the innocent and finds the guilty.
End of an Investigation
- If a team eliminates the guilty, it scores 0 points. Discard all the cards collected during this investigation. The other team draws 3 Suspect Cards (3 more Points) from the deck and add them to the cards collected during the round.
- If a team finds the guilty, it scores 1 more Point by drawing another Suspect Cards from the decks.
- If a team scores the necessary points to win, or more, the game ends and that team wins the game. If both team score the necessary points to win, or more, the team with more points wins the game. In case of a tie, play another investigation.
- If none of the team has scored the necessary points to win, play another Investigation. Draw another 12 Suspect Cards. Change the starting team and the witnesses.
