1. Game Setup
Game Board
- Place the game board.
- The four types of cards (juniper, botanical, gin, and brand) are mixed well for each type of card and placed face down in a designated position around the board to form a deck.
- Draw 4 cards from the botanical deck and 2 cards from the juniper berry deck, and place them face up in the designated positions on the board.
- Keep coins together by type and use them as stock.
Each Player
- Receive a player summary of the color of your choice and place it in front of you. The top of the Player Summary is reserved for the Botanical Area, where botanical cards are placed, and the right side is reserved for the Distilled Area, where distilled cards are placed.
- Place a victory point marker of the same color as the player summary at the "0" victory point track on the board.
- Draw two cards each from the brand deck and the gin deck and put them in your hand. (You may check the contents of the cards)
- Receive 3 coins.
- Decide the starting player in any way you wish. You may start with the player who most recently drank gin.
2. Game Play
"Gin Crafters" is a turn-based game.
After the active player has performed two actions, his or her turn is passed clockwise to the next player. This process is repeated until the game ends (see 3. Game End).
There are four types of actions that can be performed on your turn: "PURCHASE," "INSPIRATION," "SIDE BUSINESS," and "DISTILLATION," and you may perform the same action both times.
Purchase
Pay coins and get botanicals and juniper berries from the market that will be used to make gin.
The market cards are purchased at the price indicated on the left side of the market board (1). The purchased cards are immediately placed in the "Botanical Area" at the top of your player summary (2). There is no limit to the number of cards you can own.
The space vacated by the purchase of a card is filled by shifting cards in the same row downwards so that the price is lower (3). Then a card is drawn from the deck and replenished face up in an empty space (4).
When there are no more cards in the deck, all the discarded cards are mixed well and used as a new deck.
REFRESH & PURCASE
If the card you want is not available in the market, you can pay coins to replace the card in the market and then make a purchase. Refresh purchases require 3 coins for botanicals and 2 coins for juniper berries.
Discard all cards in either the Botanical or Juniper Berry market (1) and draw and place cards from the deck until the market is filled (2). Then, select any one card and add it to the botanical area (3). At this time, the player can freely choose a card, ignoring the cost of the card position.
The vacant market space from which the card was selected is replenished in the same way as in normal purchasing, by shifting the card in the same row down and then drawing a card from the deck and replenishing it face up into the vacant space (4).
Example: Taka needed a Flower botanical, so he decides to pay 3 coins to refresh it. He discards the four botanicals in the market (1) and rearranges the four new cards in the market (2). Taka chooses the Rose card (3) and places it in his botanical area. Taka draws a card from the deck to the empty space in the market and replenishes it face up (4).
Inspiration
Inspire a new gin recipe or branding method. Look at the top two cards of the gin deck or brand deck and add one card to your hand and discard the other card.
Side Business
You get money on side business. Receive 3 coins from stock.
Distillation
You distill the ingredients on the gin card to make gin.
- Select a gin card from your hand. When all the ingredients on the card are in your botanical area, you can distill the gin.
- Place the gin card to be distilled in the distillation area to the right of your player summary and score the victory points indicated on the gin card. Advance your Victory Point marker on the Victory Point Track by the amount of Victory Points earned.
- Next, select one juniper berry to use and place it out in the distillation area to the right of the player summary. Check the bonus conditions for the Juniper Berry, and if the conditions are met, score the victory points indicated on the Juniper card and proceed on the victory point track.
- At the end, select one key botanical from the ingredient botanical cards, which determines the main flavor of the gin. The effect described on the selected botanical card is used immediately and the card is then moved to the distillation area.
- Other botanical cards remain in the botanical area and can be used after the next action.
Attention: If the conditions for using the Key Botanical's effect are not met or the player does not wish to use the effect, the Key Botanical's card effect will not be activated and the effect cannot be used thereafter. However, one Key Botanical must always be selected even if the effect is not activated.
Example: Distilled gin with juniper berry + fruit + flower + herb recipes
Taka confirmed that the ingredients for the recipe were available in the botanical area and decided to distill this gin. The gin card was placed in the distillation area and Taka received the 6 victory points listed on the card. Move the Italian juniper berry to the distillation area for a bonus condition of +1 victory point because the herbal ingredient is used in the recipe. At the end, the fruit "Yuzu" was selected as the key botanical and moved to the distillation area. Using the Yuzu card effect, Taka gained 2 coins.
Exception: Gin made from 2 juniper berries
When distilling a gin made from two juniper berries, you must own two or more juniper berries in the botanical area. One of the juniper berry cards is selected and placed in the distillation area along with the gin card, and the victory point indicated on the gin card is awarded. Since no other botanicals are used, you do not get the Juniper Berry bonus, etc. Also, since we do not use any other botanicals other than juniper berries, you do not select any key botanicals.
Bonus Action: When 10 or 20 Victory Points Are Achieved
As you advance on the victory point track, when you exceed 10 or 20 points, you can perform one "INSPIRATION" action as a bonus action (see below for more information on INSPIRATION). You do not have to stop exactly at the 10 or 20 square in order to perform this bonus action.
Attention: INSPIRATION can only be performed on this victory point track when each player first passes 10 or 20 points. Even if a player passes the same victory point again due to some card effect or other, he/she cannot make another inspiration.
Distillation with a Share of Botanicals
If you do not have enough botanicals to distill gin, you can borrow botanical cards belonging to other players to distill.
To borrow a short botanical, declare to the player who owns the botanical that he/she wishes to borrow the botanical card (1). This is the same as owning the botanical in the botanical area, and the botanical can be distilled. The player who lends the botanical card also gets 2 coins from the stock for his/her contribution to the creation of a new gin (2).
Only one botanical can be borrowed. You cannot borrow Juniper Berries and you cannot choose a borrowed botanical as your key botanical. Also, the botanical card will not be moved or lost from the botanical area of the player who lent it. You can even borrow your own type of botanical card.
Example: Borrowing and distilling botanicals
Taka decides to distill a gin that requires two herbs, but is short one botanical, so he decides to borrow one from another player to distill it. Taka declares that he wants to borrow the herb botanical, rosemary, from Taro who owns it (1), and Taro, who lent Rosemary to Taka, receives 2 coins from the stock (2). This makes rosemary considered as owned in the botanical area only at the time of this action, and the ingredients for the recipe are now available for distillation. This results in a victory point of 5 for distilling the gin. In addition, since this recipe contains herbs, the Italian juniper berries used earned an additional victory point of 1. At the end, since Taka could not choose a borrowed botanical as the key botanical, he chose his own angelica as the key botanical and used its effect to earn a number of coins equal to the number of gins he had distilled (3).
3. Game End
When the player whose turn has ended has more than 30 victory points, it is a signal of the game end. The game continues until the player to the right of the player with 30 points or more takes his or her turn, and the game ends.
Each player gets a victory point for each brand card that fulfills the requirements in his or her hand and adds it to the victory point track. The player with the highest total score will be declared the winner and will be honored as the best Gin Crafter. In case of a tie, the winner is the player with the highest number of brand cards achieved. If they are also tied, the winner is the player furthest from the starting player.
4. About Each Card
Gin Card
Each gin card lists the ingredients used to make the gin and the victory point. Players collect ingredients in the botanical area to distill gin for victory points.
Botanical Card
Botanicals are the plants that determine the flavor of the gin, and there are five types: herbal, fruit, spice, floral, and oriental. Each card describes the effect when used as a key botanical. If a botanical is used for distillation, it will remain in the botanical area if it is not used as a key botanical.
Juniper Berry Card
Juniper berry is a botanical, but it is a special plant that is essential for gin making. When distilling any gin card, juniper berry card is a mandatory ingredient.
If you distill a gin whose recipe contains the botanicals listed on the Juniper Berry card, you will receive the bonus victory points listed on the card. In this case, it is not necessary to use the botanicals listed on the Juniper Berry card as key botanicals.
Brand Card
Brand cards indicate what players value in gin making. They are revealed at the end of the game, and victory points are awarded if the conditions on the card are met.
When a brand card's terms and conditions say "most", assume that a tie also satisfies the terms and conditions.
