Preliminaries (Préliminaires)
Place the game board on the table. Shuffle the cards of each category well and place them within everyone's reach, face down. Each player draws at random one Character card, one Investment card and one Boxe card, then chooses a pawn to use for moving around the neighbourhood. The role of banker is given to a volunteer player.
Character card
This is your new identity for the game. Read its description carefully and, above all, try not to forget to use the advantages it gives you at the right moments!
Starting money (Argent de départ)
Each player begins the game with $3,000, divided as follows: one $1,000 bill, three $500 bills and five $100 bills.
Start of the game (Début de la partie)
The players place their pawns on the Refuge space. Each player rolls a die. The player who rolls the highest result begins the game.
Gameplay (Déroulement)
Start from the Refuge space. Each player rolls one die per turn and advances by the number rolled. Players take turns clockwise, and movement around the board is also in this direction.
Basic rules to know (Règles de base à connaître)
Purchase (Achat): Anything bought by a player that does not already belong to another player is the exclusive property of the bank. The money from these sales goes to the bank. E.g.: Diamond, Protection, Collection (Collecte), Justice, Boxe, etc.
Fine (Amende): When a player does not have the money required to pay a Justice card, he pays nothing but must draw a Criminal Record card, on the orders of the Court.
Rounding (Arrondir): When the situation requires it, round amounts up to the next hundred. E.g.: half of $900 is $500.
Cards (Cartes): There are 14 different categories of cards. During the game, some may be kept and others may not. The following categories must be played immediately: Adventure, Bank, Collection, Commerce, Justice and Mission. After use, return the card face up under the deck. Once all the cards of a deck have been played, shuffle them. This rule does not apply to Investment cards, which are used only once per game. The cards to keep until the appropriate moment of use are: Adventure [star icon], Automobile, Boxe, Diamond, Pearl, Criminal Record, Investment, Mission [star icon], Protection and Recruitment. Important: unless otherwise stated, when a card tells you to pay, the bank collects the money.
Confidential (Confidentiel): The text on the back of your cards, except for Character, Criminal Record, Recruitment, Automobile, Protection and Boxe cards (once the boxer has fought a bout), must remain confidential.
Public (Public): At all times, players have the right to know exactly which cards you hold (e.g.: 2 Pearls, 3 Diamonds, 1 Criminal Record, 4 Investments), as well as your total accumulated cash.
Read aloud (Haute voix): To make the game more interactive, all players are encouraged to read the following card categories aloud: Adventure [hat icon], Automobile, Collection, Bank, Commerce and Justice, except for cards beginning with a [star icon].
Double spaces (Cases doubles): The route of the game includes double spaces. These offer two options. Make your choice, then specify which space you are playing before taking an action. The double spaces are: Expert or Seller; Mission or Recruitment; Adventure or Robbery; Brocanteur or Exchange; and Exchange or Protection.
All cards beginning with a [star icon] cannot be played when they are drawn; they are kept for later. Furthermore, they can be used only once.
Tip (Conseil): Read the Refuge space and begin playing immediately. When you arrive on a new space, read the section that relates to it.
Note on icons: the printed pictograms in the original (the star, the hat, and the card-back symbols) are shown here in brackets, since they cannot be reproduced as text.
Rules for cards and spaces (Règles des cartes et cases)
Note that the shaded sections are the instructions for each space. The text that follows each shaded section concerns the rules of the space and of the cards that may be associated with it.
Adventure (Aventure)
An event disrupts the course of your life. Draw an Adventure card. Read it. If it does not concern you, put it back under the deck; otherwise, do what it tells you. Warning! Cards beginning with a [star icon] are kept for later. You may not play more than two Adventure cards during the same turn.
Adventure cards beginning with a [hat icon] must immediately be placed on the space mentioned, face up, starting from Refuge, but never on a double space. Then draw another Adventure card. When a player lands on a space occupied by a card illustrated with a [hat icon], he may play the card and the space. Once played, the card is put back under the deck.
Boxe
You have the opportunity to invest in sports betting. Make a choice between:
- Paying $200 and drawing a Boxe card.
- Organising a fight with your boxer already in hand against the boxer of an opponent of your choice.
If you are the only player holding a Boxe card, claim $500 on this space. The player who organises the fight always adds 1 to his total result. It is forbidden to hold more than one Boxe card.
The fight (Le combat): Once the opponent has been chosen, turn your Boxe cards face up, roll the number of dice indicated on the card and add the results, where applicable. The boxer who obtains the highest result wins the bout and claims the amount written on his card for the first victory. In case of a tie, play again. Then place the losing Boxe card under the winner, face down, to show everyone the number of victories obtained by your boxer. When he has won and collected his three victories, he retires and the cards are returned under the deck.
Brocanteur
A strange person offers you the chance to sell or buy an Investment and/or an Automobile. It is forbidden to make two transactions in the same category.
Investment (Investissement)
The Brocanteur gives you two choices:
- You may invest in a business. Pay $200 to buy an Investment card.
- If you already own both shares of the same business, you may sell it at the price indicated on the cards.
Note: When the Investment deck is exhausted, it is not reshuffled.
Automobile
- If you do not have an Automobile card, you may buy one. Draw the card, look at the price and make a choice. If you decide not to buy it, return the card under the deck.
- If you already own an Automobile card, you may sell it immediately at the indicated sale price. These cards are of public knowledge and must be visible at all times. It is forbidden to own more than one Automobile card.
Automobile collision (Collision automobile)
When you finish your movement on a space occupied by one or more players owning an Automobile, a collision occurs. The player who causes the accident risks nothing. Choose which player will be involved. That player must eliminate his Automobile card or use its collision factor to save it.
Collision factor (Facteur collision)
When a player "rams" your Automobile, you must sacrifice a card or lose your vehicle. The following cards may be sacrificed: Adventure cards marked with a [star icon], Mission cards marked with a [star icon], Recruitment and Protection. Place the sacrificed card under the vehicle to show everyone that it has lost a collision factor. The collision factor indicates the number of accidents your Automobile can sustain before it is eliminated: zero, one or two.
Note: The sacrificed card is lost forever. It will be returned under the pile at the time of a sale or a fatal collision. If a player who is the victim of a collision has no card to sacrifice, or has a collision factor of zero, he must eliminate his Automobile card.
Collection (Collecte)
You come face to face with the Godfather and his men. He claims the fair share of your accumulated gains in his neighbourhood. Count your cash and follow the table below:
- If you have $1,000 to $5,000, pay $100.
- If you have $5,100 to $10,000, pay $500.
- If you have $10,100 or more, draw a Collection card.
You must pay accordingly, or return a Protection card to avoid drawing a Collection card.
Exchange (Échange)
You have the opportunity to make an Exchange in Pearls, Diamonds or Investments: one card for a card of the player of your choice. If you wish to make an Exchange, no player may refuse. The only right of the other player is to shuffle his cards. Warning! Pearl for Pearl, Diamond for Diamond, and Investment for Investment only.
Expert
The Expert appraises Pearls and Diamonds. He agrees to buy one or two items from you, but never two Pearls or two Diamonds. He offers the appraisal price for each item he buys. The other players must witness the appraisal prices.
Mission
A wealthy businessman offers you the chance to make money. Choose between:
- Drawing a Mission card.
- Carrying out a Mission [star icon] that you already hold.
Before carrying out a Mission, it is wise to recruit a few men. Cards beginning with a [star icon] are played only when you return to a Mission space. The other cards are carried out immediately.
Note: Each player counts as one man and must always be added to the men on his Recruitment cards.
Passage
On seeing the Godfather and his men, you quickly descend into the sewers. Roll three dice, add the total and check where they lead you.
- 3-7: You fall straight back onto the Godfather and his men. Follow the instructions of the Collection space without moving your pawn from the Passage space.
- 8-12: Oops! Draw an Adventure card (leave your pawn on the Passage space).
- 13-18: Wow! You find a secret passage! Move your pawn to any empty space in the neighbourhood and play it (except Refuge). Note: No collection from Refuge is possible on this move.
Protection
You meet a cousin of the Godfather. He tells you that, for the sum of $500, he could have you avoid a Collection by the Godfather. If you pay this sum, take a Protection card.
This card may only be used if you have cash exceeding $10,000. The number of Protection cards is unlimited. They can therefore spare you from paying one of the Godfather's Collections, which averages $2,500 in value.
Recruitment (Recrutement)
You have the opportunity to recruit men for your organisation. Draw a Recruitment card.
Important: You do not have to return your Recruitment cards when you carry out a Mission. Each player counts as one man and must always be added to the men on his Recruitment cards.
Refuge
Each time you pass this space, you collect $100 per man in your service. If you stop directly on Refuge, add $500.
Note: It is too late for any claim if the next player has already rolled the die.
Seller (Vendeur)
An itinerant seller wants to sell you an item for $500: a Pearl or a Diamond. The real value of the item is unknown to you before the purchase. It is an excellent opportunity to get rich. You should buy it, since the average value of Pearls and Diamonds is about $4,000 per unit.
Robbery (Vol)
A dangerous opportunity presents itself. Roll a die to find out what it is:
- 1-4: Commerce robbery.
- 5 and 6: Bank robbery.
Do you carry out this robbery, taking the risks into account? If so, draw the card corresponding to the die result. If not, you do nothing.
- Bank robbery yields $4,800 on average, but the risk of arrest is 1 in 2.
- Commerce robbery yields $1,600 on average, and the risk of arrest is 1 in 3.
Arrest (L'arrestation)
After an Arrest, you must draw a Justice card.
Justice
This is the verdict following your trial. You receive either a Fine or a Criminal Record.
Fine (Amende)
Pay the amount indicated according to the type of Robbery you attempted. If your cash is insufficient, draw a Criminal Record card.
Criminal Record (Dossier criminel)
At the end of the game, you must pay the bank $2,500 for each Criminal Record in your possession.
Warning! On your third Criminal Record you are eliminated from the game. You must then show your cards to the other players, discarding them face up under their respective decks, and return your money to the bank. If only one player remains, he is automatically declared the winner.
Object of the game (But du jeu)
Become the new Godfather by accumulating the necessary money.
First step (Première étape)
Accumulate the required wealth as quickly as possible.
Money required (Somme d'argent requise):
- 2 players: $70,000
- 3 players: $60,000
- 4 players: $50,000
- 5 players: $45,000
- 6 players: $40,000
For a shorter game, subtract $10,000 from the required amounts.
Second step (Deuxième étape)
When it is your turn to play, if you have the required money and wish to buy the neighbourhood, you must announce to the other players that you are officially a buyer. When you reach or pass the Refuge space, the game ends. Whether or not you still have the required money, you must play your last space, but you will not claim the Refuge space unless you arrive there directly.
Final step (Étape finale)
Pay your Criminal Records. Add up all your values in Pearls and Diamonds, divide this amount by two, round it up (to the next hundred) and claim this amount from the bank. If you have an Automobile, it is refunded at its purchase price. Now total your cash.
The winner (Le gagnant)
The Godfather officially declares as owner of his neighbourhood the player who hands him the most money (whether or not that player is an official buyer). In case of a tie, the number of men acquired during the game makes the difference.
