IMPORTANT
1. Object of the Game
The object of the game is to be the player who has had the best year, in other words the player who has acquired the greatest number of "day to mark with a white cross" tokens. These tokens are obtained by stopping on squares that correspond to happy events (squares framed in red), by taking them from your opponents depending on the draw of "chance" and "hazard" cards, or by being the first to reach the end of a quarter.
2. Setting Up the Game
Each deck of "chance" and "hazard" cards is shuffled. The cards are placed face down in the centre of the game board. Each player chooses a pawn, takes 2 "vacation" cards, places 2 tokens "day to mark with a white cross" and receives 800 Frs from the bank. The remaining money and "day to mark with a white cross" tokens are left with the bank, one of the players taking charge of it.
Each player draws at random one "lucky number" token (the small square cards numbered 1 to 30) that he does not show to the other players. The number shown on this token will be his lucky number for the whole game.
The youngest player begins the game. Each player takes turns in a clockwise direction (the direction opposite to the hands of a clock). The Start square corresponds to 1 January. On the board, several players may occupy the same square.
3. Progression
On his turn, each player must turn the dial of the "time-progression machine" and advance his pawn according to the indications given by the faces of this machine. At the end of his turn, each player has the possibility of buying an additional right of progression by paying 100 Frs to the bank for each additional day of progression he wants.
3.a Operating the "Time-Progression Machine"
The player turns the dial with one sharp movement. When it stops turning, two faces are visible:
- If it stops on 2 blue faces, the player will advance to the next illustrated square framed in blue on the board.
- If it stops on 2 red faces, the player will advance to the next illustrated square framed in red on the board.
- If there are 2 numbers, the player may choose to advance by the value of one or the other of these 2 numbers. For example, if the machine shows 6 and 10, he may advance either 6 days or 10 days.
At the end of this movement, if the player lands on an illustrated square, he must refer immediately to the commentaries relating to this date contained in the "Almanac of Events". If, as a result of the consecutive movements caused by these instructions, the player again arrives on an illustrated square, he must follow the instructions contained in the "Almanac of Events" for this new date. And so on.
3.b Buying Additional Days
If and only if a player's movement does not bring him to an illustrated square, he may immediately buy a right of additional progression by paying 100 Frs to the bank for each day of progression he wants. He then advances his pawn by as many days as he wishes and follows the instructions relating to the new square on which he stops.
If a player ends his turn on a non-illustrated square, his opponents may pay 100 Frs to the bank for each additional day of progression they wish to "offer" him, naturally in order to make him land on a square that penalises him.
(NB: Under no circumstances may one buy a right to move backwards.)
3.c Illustrated Squares
The illustrated squares refer to real events described in the almanac. By referring to these events, the Almanac of Events gives instructions that the player arriving on this square must follow:
- Illustrations framed in red correspond to lucky days and are profitable for the player.
- Illustrations framed in blue correspond to unlucky days and are penalising for the player.
- Illustrations framed by a double blue line are doubly penalising. Players who stop on these squares must give back one "day to mark with a white cross" token to the bank (unless they have at least one!) before following the instructions of the almanac.
- Illustrations framed half red and half blue lead to consequences that may be lucky or unlucky depending on the case.
(NB: Unless a specific clarification is given, the instructions apply only to the player who has just arrived on the square.)
4. Other Components of the Game
4.a Money
In addition to the 800 Frs allotted at the start of the game, you receive 400 Frs at the end of each quarter when you pass 31 March, 30 June and 30 September.
Your lucky number, your own birthday, and certain "chance" cards also allow you to receive money.
On the other hand, certain "hazard" cards make you spend money, and you must pay when you land on your opponent's lucky number or birthday date.
During the game, if you cannot pay the sum you owe, you are declared bankrupt, and you must then give back to the bank half of your "day to mark with a white cross" tokens and return to the last day of the preceding month.
4.b "Day to Mark with a White Cross" Tokens
Players gain and lose "day to mark with a white cross" tokens according to the indications given on the "chance" and "hazard" cards drawn during the game. In addition, the first player who passes the last day of a quarter (31 March, 30 June and 30 September) receives 3 tokens from the bank and the second player to pass it receives 2. As for the player who first reaches 31 December, he receives 6 tokens. The player who is in second position at that moment receives 3.
It is also possible to buy one token at the start of each turn, by paying 500 Frs to the bank.
4.c Lucky Number
Each time a player lands on the day whose date corresponds to his lucky number (which he drew at the start of the game), whatever the month, he receives 200 Frs from the bank.
On the other hand, any player who lands on a day whose date corresponds to another player's lucky number must pay that player 200 Frs.
4.d Birthday
When a player lands on his own birthday date, each player gives him 200 Frs. The fact of landing on another player's birthday date also obliges you to pay that player 200 Frs.
4.e Astrological Signs
The unfortunate consequences of "hazard" cards (whether you or one of your opponents draws them) have no effect on you for as long as your pawn is in the zone corresponding to your astrological sign (for example, for Gemini, from 21 May to 21 June).
4.f "Vacation" Cards
At his turn, each player may play one of his 2 "vacation" cards after having carried out his various movements. This card allows him to advance 14 additional days on the board. (NB: This additional progression completes the player's turn. It is not possible to play more than one "vacation" card during the same turn.)
These "vacation" cards must be played before 15 November. After this date, they can no longer be played. Playing a "vacation" card implies an advance of exactly 14 days (it is not possible, for example, to advance only 10 days).
4.g Month of December
December being the last month of the year, 2 special rules apply:
- In December, players may only progress by using the smaller of the 2 numbers shown by the "time-progression machine". (NB: To enter the month of December, it does not matter how the progression was carried out.)
- In December, players may not "buy" additional days of progression. On the other hand, they may "offer" them to their opponent(s).
5. End of the Game
As soon as a player reaches or passes the square of 31 December, the game stops. He receives 6 tokens "day to mark with a white cross", and the player who is in second position at that moment receives 3. It is no longer possible to buy tokens from the bank.
The player who has the greatest number of "day to mark with a white cross" tokens is declared the winner.
(NB: In case of a tie between several players, the sum of money held at the end of the game will break the tie.)
NECESSARY CLARIFICATIONS
1. End of a Turn
When one lands on an illustrated square, one must immediately follow the instructions contained in the "Almanac of Events" and draw "chance" and "hazard" cards as appropriate. Their implications may land you on another illustrated square, in which case you must again refer to the almanac.
A player's turn ends when all interactions relating to the drawing of cards have been carried out. He must then pass the "time-progression machine" to the next player.
2. Buying Additional Days
It is not possible to buy additional days of progression if one is on an illustrated square at the end of one's turn: whether it is a square framed in red or in blue, a square bearing a zodiac sign, or the end of a quarter.
On the other hand, if your movement brings you to a non-illustrated square, you may buy additional progression for as many days as you wish by paying 100 Frs per day to the bank. The interest of these additional progressions is to reach squares that make you gain money or "day to mark with a white cross" tokens, or that make you draw a "chance" card if you land on a square framed in red.
Your opponents may "offer" you additional progression by paying 100 Frs per day of movement to the bank, alone or with several others. Their interest is opposite to yours: they will try to make you fall on squares that make you spend money or give back tokens to the bank, or that make you draw a "hazard" card.
(NB: One may under no circumstances buy a right to move backwards.)
3. Illustrated Squares
The purpose of this game is not to answer questions, so it does not matter whether the players know or not what happened on the dates on which they stop.
One must systematically follow the indications contained in the "Almanac of Events" as soon as one lands on an illustrated square framed in red or blue.
There are only 2 cases in which one should not take into account the indications given in the almanac:
- When one lands on an illustrated square as a result of a consecutive movement caused by the implications of a "chance" or "hazard" card drawn during an opponent's turn.
- And when there is a possible exchange of pawns when a player stops on the square of 1 April or 21 June (see these dates in the almanac).
4. End of Quarters
Each time a player passes or stops on 31 March, 30 June or 30 September, he receives 400 Frs from the bank. Of course, during the game a player may pass several of these dates, since it sometimes happens that one moves back. Thus one may acquire this sum several times.
(NB: One does not receive 400 Frs during the exchanges of pawns that occur when a player stops on 1 April or 21 June.)
The first player to pass the end of a quarter, that is, who passes or stops on 31 March, 30 June or 30 September, receives 3 "day to mark with a white cross" tokens from the bank. The second receives 2.
5. Bankruptcy
Players who do not have enough money to pay their debts lose half of their "day to mark with a white cross" tokens, which they give back to the bank (in the case of an odd number, round up to the upper half: for example, if a player has 5 tokens, he must give back 3). They must also move their pawn back, by placing it on the last day of the preceding month (except in January, where it will be agreed that they rejoin the Start square).
While a player is bankrupt, he pays nothing. But as soon as he is solvent again, he will forget, unfortunately for his opponents, to pay his former debts.
(NB: Players who have no money are not necessarily bankrupt: they become so only when they are unable to meet their payments.)
6. "Day to Mark with a White Cross" Tokens
A player who no longer has any "day to mark with a white cross" tokens is not bankrupt. If he must give some to the bank, or to one of his opponents, while he no longer has any, he simply ignores this claim!
7. Claiming What Is Owed for Lucky Numbers and Birthdays
A player may claim what is owed to him by the bank or by another player as long as his pawn is still on the square in question, even if he has passed the "time-progression machine" to another player, that is to say, even if he has finished his turn.
(NB: It is better to place the card of your lucky number face down, so that your opponents do not have it in view permanently. Dates are sometimes quickly forgotten!)
8. Astrological Signs
As long as your pawn is in your astrological sign, you are protected against all the bad things that may happen (having to pay money, give back tokens, move back, and so on). On the other hand, you will keep the advantage of all the lucky events that may occur.
9. 1 April and 21 June
- When a player stops on 1 April, he must swap the places of his opponents' pawns on the board; only his own pawn must not change place. (NB: In a 2-player game, the 2 pawns must then be swapped.)
- When a player stops on 21 June, he must swap the place of his pawn with that of any other player's pawn. Obviously, he will try to make this swap with the player in the lead!
During these exchanges, one must not take into account the meaning of the new squares on which the players will find themselves.
10. "Vacation" Cards
At the end of his turn, wherever the player is on the board (illustrated or not), he may play a "vacation" card, which allows him to advance exactly 14 days.
Note: only one card may be played per turn, and it is imperative to play it before 15 November.
If during this movement the player lands on an illustrated square, he must not follow the instructions contained in the Almanac of Events.
11. Order to Follow When There Are Several Simultaneous Interactions
When one square conditions several actions, the order to follow is always the following:
- First pay the other players (the sums owed for birthdays are to be paid before the sums owed for lucky numbers).
- Then pay the bank.
- Draw the necessary cards if needed, and follow their respective instructions.
(NB: When a player has to draw 2 cards in succession, he draws the first and follows its instructions, then he draws the second. Likewise, when several players are led to draw a card all together, each draws his card in turn order, one after the other, and always in turn order each follows the instructions given for his own turn.)
12. Dates of the Astrological Signs
(NB: Some of the start dates of the astrological signs may not match the horoscope you are in the habit of consulting. These slight differences are due to the fact that not all horoscopes agree.)
Translator's note: the French booklet refers to a table of the zodiac sign dates, but that table is not in the scanned copy, so the dates of each sign are not transcribed here. The example given in section 4.e (Gemini, 21 May to 21 June) is taken from the text.
