Components

  • 64 Four Season tiles (Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter seasonal icons; 48 of each season in total). Each tile has seasonal icons on the front and a back, and three light gray segments on which animal tokens are placed.
  • 5 mountain player boards (5 types), each with a peak, two choice tile areas, a trump tile area, a deck space and an animal token area (9 circles in total).
  • 45 animal tokens (15 each of Rabbit, Squirrel, and Fox).
  • 1 copy of score sheets.
  • This rule sheet.

Setup

Set up the components on the table (play area).

  • Shuffle the five mountain player boards face down, and deal one board to each player. The players each flip their mountain player board face up and place it in front of themselves.
  • Each player places, in the animal token area on their player board, a token of each animal on its side, a total of 9 animal tokens, that match the icons on the squares.
  • Each player draws 11 Four Season tiles face down to form their individual deck. If you cannot stack all the tiles into a single deck, you can form multiple decks.
  • Each player receives 1 score sheet. Prepare pens or pencils to write on the score sheets.
  • The remaining mountain boards, Four Season tiles, animal tokens, and score sheets are not used in the game, so put them back into the box.

For 2 players: In addition to the above procedure, divide all remaining Four Season tiles roughly in half and add them to each player's deck. (When playing with 2 players, a deck of up to 20 tiles is used.)

Objective

Arrange 9 tiles on the mountain board and place animal tokens to complete your mountain. The winner is determined by the sum of the seasonal points based on the combination of Four Season tiles and the animal points based on the type of animal token.

How to Play

The following 3 phases, A to C, count as 1 round. Play 9 rounds of them, and calculate the score. At the end of Rounds 1 to 8, return to phase A. At the end of Round 9, proceed to Scoring.

A. Pass Four Season tiles B. Choose a Four Season tile C. Place Four Season tiles and animal tokens

5-A. Pass Four Season tiles

In this phase, players each replenish their hand and pass it to other players.

Replenish Your Hand

You always have two tiles as your hand. The way to replenish one's hand differs only on Round 1, as follows.

Round 1: The players each draw 3 tiles from their deck. They choose a trump tile (to be described later) from among them, and place it face up in their trump tile area. They keep the remaining 2 tiles as their hand, making sure to conceal what is on the tiles from other players.

Round 2 and later rounds: The players each collect the remaining Four Season tiles in their choice tile areas and add them to their hand. After that, the players each draw a tile from their deck to replenish their hand to 2 tiles.

Divide Your Hand

When playing with 3-5 players: Players each place 1 tile from their hand face down on each neighboring player's choice tile area. When you do this, place the tile in the left choice tile area of the player to your right and in the right choice tile area of the player to your left. When all players have finished placing their tiles, proceed to "5-B. Choose a Four Season tile".

Tip: Try to pass a tile that would please the other player.

When playing with 2 players: Choose one of the two tiles in your hand and place it face down on the other player's choice tile area. When you do this, place the tile in your opponent's left choice tile area. The remaining tile in your hand will not be used. Discard it face up. After that, draw a tile from your deck and place it face down in your right choice tile area. When both players have placed their tiles, proceed to "5-B. Choose a Four Season tile".

5-B. Choose a Four Season tile

In this phase, you choose which tile to place on your mountain board.

The players each flip to reveal both of the Four Season tiles in their choice tile areas. Then they choose in their mind which Four Season tile they will place on their mountain board. Do not tell the other players which tile you have chosen. You may also choose the Four Season tile in your trump tile area.

After choosing a Four Season tile, move the leftmost animal remaining in your animal token area to the peak of your mountain board.

When all players have moved their animal tokens to the peak of their mountain, proceed to "5-C. Place Four Season tiles and animal tokens". (At the end of Round 9, move the leftmost remaining animal token to the peak.)

Trump tile

In any round during the game, you can choose the Four Season tile in your trump tile area and place it instead of a Four Season tile from your choice tile areas. Each player can do this only once during the game.

Tip: If there is not any good tile in the choice tile area, use the trump tile! It is not affected by other players and truly a trump tile!

5-C. Place Four Season tiles and animal tokens

In this phase, players each place a Four Season tile and animal token on their mountain board.

Pass the animal token

All players simultaneously pass the animal tokens they placed on the peak in "5-B. Choose a Four Season tile". Pass your animal token by placing it in the applicable location indicated in the following table.

PlayersIf choosing the left choice tileIf choosing the right choice tileIf choosing the trump tile
3-5Passed to the player to your left; placed in the space under the recipient's choice tile areaPassed to the player to your right; placed in the space under the recipient's choice tile areaPassed to yourself; placed in the space under your trump tile area
2Passed to your opponent; placed in the space under the recipient's choice tile areaNone; placed outside the mountain board (discarded and not used subsequently)Passed to yourself; placed in the space under your trump tile area

(If choosing the right Four Season tile when playing with 3-5 players: move the animal on the peak to the space below the left choice tile area of the player to your right.)

Animal tokens are given as tokens of appreciation to the players who gave their Four Season tiles.

Place the Four Season tile

Players each place their chosen Four Season tile in the orientation as shown in the manual's diagram, in any hex in the center of the mountain board. Note that you cannot place the Four Season tiles on top of each other.

Place the animal tokens

If you have received any animal token(s), place all of them on their side in the light gray segment(s) of the Four Season tile you have placed in the current round. There are 3 segments to place animal tokens on each tile, but only 1 animal token can be placed in each segment.

When all players have placed their animal tokens, proceed to the next round's "5-A. Pass Four Season tiles". When Round 9 is over, i.e. the mountains are completed, proceed to "6. Scoring".

Scoring

After completing Round 9, use the score sheets to calculate your scores. The player with the highest mountain points, which is the total of seasonal and animal points, wins the game.

In the case of a tie, the tied player with the highest seasonal points wins. If there is still a tie, the tied winners share the victory.

Forest: Triangular areas created by combining the seasonal icons on Four Season tiles and mountain board.

Flatland: Light gray areas on Four Season tiles.

(12 forests and 14 flatlands in total.)

Seasonal Points

This is the total of the points from all 12 forests made on the mountain board. You gain points from each forest based on the season as shown below.

For forests with seasonal icons of non-uniform colors, you do not gain any points (0 points).

  • Spring Forest (forest with pink icons only): Score the number of cherry blossoms. (Examples: 6 pts, 7 pts.)
  • Summer Forest (forest with green icons only): Score the number of conifers x the number of broadleaf trees. (Examples: 3 x 3 = 9 pts; 3 x 0 = 0 pts.)
  • Autumn Forest (forest with brown icons only): Score 9 pts for each set of 3 (Mushroom, Chestnut, Grape: all types). Others (2 or fewer types) score 4 pts. (Examples: all types 9 pts; 2 types 4 pts.)
  • Winter Forest (forest with blue icons only): Score the number of winter forests on your board + 3 pts per forest (1: 4 pts each, 2: 5 pts each, 3: 6 pts each...). (Example: 3 winter forests on the board: 3 + 3 = 6 pts per winter forest.)

Spring forest is good for scoring consistently. Summer forest is high-risk and high-reward, in which you can aim for 18 pts but may end up with 0 pts. Autumn forest is good for aiming for 9 pts while earning 4 pts securely. Winter forest is unusual in that the entire mountain board determines the score. If you make many winter forests, you can get a lot of high-score forests at once.

Animal Points

This is the total of the points gained from the 14 flatlands on the mountain board. You gain points from each flatland based on the number of animal types there.

  • 3 types: 15 pts
  • 2 types: 8 pts
  • 1 type: 3 pts

Write on the Score Sheet

Players each write their name in the purple box (1) and write their score on the score sheet as follows.

Write down the seasonal points

  • Write the points from each forest in the red box (2). Each row corresponds to the forest location and each column to the forest season. Write the scores in the corresponding squares.
  • For each forest with seasonal icons of non-uniform colors, write "0" in the leftmost column. Eventually, a point will be written in a square in each row.
  • Write the total score for each row in each square in the red box (3), and write their total score, the seasonal score, in the red box (4).

Write down the animal points

  • Write the number of flatlands according to the number of animal types in the squares in the blue box (5).
  • Multiply the numbers in the squares in the blue box (5) by 15 (for 3 types of animals), 8 (2 types) and 3 (1 type) and write these numbers in the blue box (6). Then add up the numbers in the blue box (6) and write the total in the blue box (7).

Write down the mountain points

Add up the points from the red box (4) and blue box (7) and write the total in the green box (8).

Score example

In the manual's example the column totals are 0, 18, 13, 13, 18 (seasonal points 62); flatlands: 1 with 3 types, 2 with 2 types, 2 with 1 type, i.e. 15 + 16 + 6 = 37 animal points; mountain total 99.

Optional Rules: Great Fujiyama (Cooperative Game)

With the optional rules, you can play the cooperative game "Great Fujiyama".

Setup

Only Four Season tiles are used. Put the animal tokens, mountain board, and score sheet back into the box. Shuffle all 64 Four Season tiles face down to form a common deck. Then draw a tile from the deck and place it in the play area in the same orientation as specified in the standard rules. Players each draw 3 tiles from the deck and hold them in their hand, making sure to conceal what is on the tiles from other players. The player who climbed a mountain most recently is the start player.

Objective/Overview

All players work together to build one big mountain. The players take turns to place one of the Four Season tiles from their hand to build the mountain as high as possible. The level of the tiles is called the "station". On each station (level), line up Four Season tiles equal to "11 - station number", as 10 tiles in the 1st station, 9 tiles in the 2nd station, and so on. You can complete all the way if you manage to build the mountain up to the 10th station. How many stations will you manage to complete?

How to Play

Repeat the following steps, beginning with the start player.

  1. Choose a Four Season tile from your hand and place it according to the Great Fujiyama Placement Rules.
  2. Draw a tile from the deck and add it to your hand.

When you do this, you must not show your hand to other players, but you may discuss where to place the tiles by talking like "I want to place so and so" or "I want so and so to make a Spring Forest".

The game ends immediately when the active player cannot place any Four Season tiles. Count the number of completed stations.

Great Fujiyama Placement Rules

Place Four Seasons tiles directly on the table without using the mountain boards.

  • Rule 1: All tiles except the first one must be placed adjacent to the right, left, or diagonally above an already-placed Four Season tile(s). Note that the color of adjacent seasonal icons must match.
  • Rule 2: When placing a tile diagonally above already-placed seasonal tiles, you can only do so by placing it above 2 adjacent Four Season tiles.
  • Rule 3: You may only place up to 10 tiles on the 1st station.

We can place the tiles for the 1st station as long as the colors match. For full completion, it would be wiser to place the tiles above without placing all 10 tiles for the 1st station first.

Evaluation of the Result

  • Completed to the 1st-3rd station: Sandbox pile
  • Completed to the 4th-5th station: Normal Mountain
  • Completed to the 6th-7th station: Reputed Mountain
  • Completed to the 8th-9th station: Fujiyama
  • Completed to the 10th station (fully completed): Great Fujiyama

Let's all work together to complete the Great Fujiyama!

Stories of Fujiyama, aka Mt. Fuji

Mt. Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan, standing 3,776 m, equivalent to a 900-story building. While there are several theories concerning the origin of its name, it is said to have been named for being a wonderfully "unique" ("fuji") mountain. In addition to "unique", some theories state its name to have originated from "immortal" ("fushi") or "fujin" ("everlasting" smokes and snow). Mt. Fuji has eight peaks called the Eight Sacred Peaks. From their shapes, Mt. Fuji is also called the Eight-Leave Mountain ("Hachiyou-yama") or the Eight-Face Mountain ("Yatsuzura-yama").
