Components
1 game board, 4 wooden animals, 12 food pieces, 3 replacement food pieces, 6 wooden trees, 1 die, 1 rulebook.
Setup
Place the game board in the middle of the table so that it is accessible to all players. Each player chooses an animal and places it on the earth space in the middle of the board's meadow.
Place the mushrooms, berries and apples on the clearings provided on the game board. Place the trees in pairs on the clearings that are still empty.
Goal of the Game
Each player must gather an apple, a mushroom and a berry with their animal and bring them all back to their family.
Course of the Game
The child who most recently ate an apple starts. Play proceeds clockwise.
On your turn, roll the die and move your animal forward by the number of points rolled. You may jump over other animals, but you must still count the occupied space. If you land on a space occupied by another animal, you may place yourself next to that animal.
The special spaces are the food spaces, the arrival spaces and the tree spaces.
Tree Space
If you land with your animal on a tree space, you have the right to take a tree from a clearing and place it on a space of your choice on the forest path. This is also valid if one or more animals are already on a tree space. The forest path is then blocked at that spot.
If the clearings are empty, you may move a tree of your choice that is already on the board.
Note: you may not place a tree on a special space.
Being Blocked
If a player finds themselves blocked between two or more trees, they may roll the die three times. If they roll a 1, they may move one tree and advance one space.
A player is considered blocked if there is no tree space between the trees (between which they are therefore trapped). A player is also blocked if they are on a tree space and surrounded by trees.
Translator's note: the original text for the blocked condition is terse. It is rendered literally here, and the illustrations on printed page 9 show the "Blocked" and "Not blocked" situations.
Barred Path
If the path is barred by a tree, the player must stay in front of the tree. They thereby lose the number of spaces they still had left to advance. They have no right to jump over the tree.
Food Spaces
To gather food, you must land exactly on a food space with the number of points you rolled on the die. You then have the right to take a food piece. This is also valid if the food space is occupied by one or more animals.
Each player may have only one food piece of each kind.
Taking Food from Another Player
If a player lands on a space of the path that is already occupied by another animal, they have the right to take a food piece of their choice from that animal. This rule does not apply to special spaces.
Exception: if you have already collected all three kinds of food and you land on a space occupied by another animal, you may not take food from that animal. This is also valid if the other animal has only a kind of food you no longer need.
End of the Game
Arrival Spaces
The arrival spaces are marked with the tracks of four animals: the squirrel, the badger, the hedgehog and the hare.
As soon as you have gathered all three food pieces, you may set off to find your family. You win the game if you land exactly on the arrival space.
