Game Contents
- 1 pond (game board), showing 31 lily pads and 6 start and finish spaces around its edge.
- 1 fish
- 6 frog families in different colors; each family consists of 2 large frogs and 3 small frogs.
Setup
- Place the pond in the middle of the table.
- Place the fish (A) in the middle of the pond.
- Place the frog families (B) you will play with (one per player) beside the pond, next to their start spaces:
- Each frog family has its own start space, marked with a frog icon in its color.
- This start space is always opposite the finish space, which is marked with a half circle in its color.
Note: The preparation of the game board differs depending on how many players are playing (diagrams for 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 players).
Object of the Game
The first player to get their entire frog family across the pond to their finish space wins the game. But beware of the fish!
Froggit can be played at two difficulty levels, JUNIOR or EXPERT, according to the experience and age of the players.
Rules - JUNIOR Version
Course of Play
The youngest player starts, and players take turns clockwise. Players move the frogs of their color. They may play with a frog that is on its start space, or with a frog that is already in the pond. Once a frog has left its start space, it can leave the pond only via its finish space, except when the fish sends it back to its start space (see Moving the Fish). Once a frog has left the pond via its finish space, it cannot return to the pond.
Moving a Frog
Frogs move by jumping onto empty lily pads. The number of jumps a frog can make depends on its size:
- A large frog can jump 1 or 2 times.
- A small frog can jump 1, 2 or 3 times.
Different types of jumps can be combined until the maximum number of jumps is reached.
- A frog can jump directly onto an empty adjacent lily pad;
- Or it can jump over one adjacent frog, regardless of its size or color, and land on the empty lily pad directly behind it in the same direction. A frog can never jump over the fish (see Moving the Fish).
Example: The large orange frog jumps over a large blue frog and then jumps once more over a small blue frog. Here the large orange frog must stop, because it has reached the maximum of 2 jumps.
Example: The small orange frog enters the pond by jumping from its start space onto an empty lily pad, then jumps over a large orange frog and makes 1 last jump. Here the small orange frog must stop, because it has reached the maximum of 3 jumps.
Note: If a player cannot move a frog on their turn, they must move the fish (see Moving the Fish).
Moving the Fish
When a player reaches their finish space (C), they must move the fish from its place by 1 or 2 lily pads. If the fish moves onto a lily pad on which there is a frog (D), the fish ends its move and that frog must return to its start space (E).
Example: The small orange frog moves to its finish space with 1 jump. In the same turn the orange player moves the fish under the water to the lily pad on which the large blue frog is. The large blue frog must return to its start space.
Note: When the fish moves to the desired lily pad, it moves under the water. Therefore lily pads on which there are frogs do not block the fish's movement.
If a player cannot move any of their frogs during their turn, they must move the fish onto the lily pad with the frog that blocks their further movement. If the fish itself is what blocks such a move, move the fish to any lily pad in the pond, regardless of the usual limit of 2 lily pads. Move the fish so that you can make your next turn.
End of the Game
The player who first gets their whole frog family across the pond to their finish space becomes the winner. The game ends at that moment.
Rules - EXPERT Version
The rules of the EXPERT version are the same as in the JUNIOR version, except that a frog may, under certain conditions, jump not only onto empty lily pads but also onto lily pads on which there is 1 other frog.
At most 2 frogs (1 small frog and 1 large frog) may be on one lily pad.
- A small frog may jump onto the back of a large frog of the same color.
- A large frog may jump onto a frog of a different color.
Example: The small orange frog jumps over a large blue frog and lands on the back of a large orange frog. Then it makes 2 direct jumps onto empty lily pads.
Example: The large orange frog jumps over a large blue frog and lands on a small blue frog. Then it makes 1 more jump onto an empty lily pad.
Forming a Team
When a small frog ends its move on the back of a large frog of its own color, these frogs form a team. The fish cannot send a team of two frogs back to the start space until the small frog jumps away.
Example: The small orange frog jumps over a large blue frog onto the back of a large orange frog. Then it makes 2 direct jumps onto the backs of another large orange frog and ends its move by forming a team with that frog. This team cannot be sent to the start space by the fish.
Moving a Team
- A team may jump only 1 time, directly onto an empty adjacent lily pad; it cannot jump over or onto another frog or the fish.
- A team cannot enter or leave the pond together, only separately.
- When a team splits, the small frog must move first, leaving the large frog behind.
Example: The orange team cannot leave the pond together. The two frogs must enter the finish space separately. In this case the small orange frog reaches the finish space first. On the next turn the large orange frog can reach the finish space as well.
Trapping a Frog
When a large frog ends its move on a small frog of a different color, the small frog is trapped. The small frog cannot move until the large frog jumps away.
Example: The large orange frog jumps over a large blue frog onto an empty lily pad. It makes 1 more direct jump onto a small blue frog and ends its move by trapping the small blue frog. The small blue frog cannot move any further.
If the fish moves onto a lily pad with a large frog that has trapped a small frog, both frogs are sent back to their start spaces.
QUICK GAME
The rules for the quick game are the same as in the JUNIOR and EXPERT versions, except that each frog family now consists of 1 large and 2 small frogs.
