Components
2 game boards (double-sided), 39 double tiles, 6 single tiles, 16 green grass markers, 7 flower markers, 1 Challenge booklet
Game Idea
For One - Black Roses (Schwarze Rosen) confronts you, alone, with fragrant decisions again and again! You try to plant your meadow so that the same flowers lie in a line as often as possible. To do so you must plan skillfully with the double tiles and pay special attention to the scarce roses!
Every For One game is built so that you can learn the basic rules easily. For further challenges, a Challenge booklet guides you through ever more demanding chapters with levels that build on one another. There you can also enter your results and decide for yourself whether to be satisfied with reaching Bronze status or only move on to the next level once you have reached Gold.
For One - Black Roses by Reiner Knizia offers 20 levels, the right mix for everyone who likes to seek a playful challenge on their own.
Setup
For the first game (and the first chapter) lay out the game board showing the 1 in front of you.
First put the following tiles back into the box (you will only need them for later chapters):
- All 6 double tiles that show the same flower on both halves
- All 6 double tiles with black roses on them
- All 6 double tiles with bees on them
- All 6 single tiles (the small square tiles)
Shuffle the 21 remaining double tiles face down, and you are ready for the first game!
In the Challenge booklet you will find further setup steps and new challenges for other levels.
Gameplay
The course of play is extremely simple: draw one face-down tile after another and place it face up on the game board. It is important that you may only draw and look at the next tile after you have placed the previous one on the game board. Your goal is to lay as many identical flowers in a line as possible.
For placing the tiles you must observe the following placement rules:
- The tile must be adjacent with at least one flower to a space on which a flower already lies (placed, or printed on the game board). The flowers may be different.
- You may place the tile vertically or horizontally, but it must be placed in the given grid. (Double tiles always cover two adjacent spaces on the game board.)
- Tiles may not overlap, nor be placed on border spaces or extend beyond the edge of the board.
- You may not place a tile on spaces that are already covered by a tile or on which a flower is printed.
- You may not skip placing. All drawn tiles must be placed.
Examples
- Not allowed! The new tile is not adjacent to an existing flower.
- Allowed! The new tile is adjacent to an existing flower (flowers printed on the game board count).
- Not allowed! Tiles must be placed to fit on the grid and may neither be placed on other tiles nor overlap.
- Allowed! Flower types may differ when placing next to one another and do not have to match.
- Not allowed! The tile may not be placed on existing flowers.
- Not allowed! You may not place tiles outside the playing field or skip placing.
Lines of 3
Your goal is to lay as many lines of 3 as possible. These are three (or more) spaces with identical flowers lying adjacent in a line, horizontally or vertically. Each line of 3 with yellow, pink, blue or purple flowers earns you 1 point. Each line of 3 with white or red roses earns you 2 points.
Notes:
- Lines with more than 3 adjacent identical flowers earn no extra points, even if the line consists of 6 or more identical flowers.
- You can count a flower for both a horizontal and a vertical line of 3.
From Level 2, flower markers are placed beside the game board at the start of the game, and later also green grass markers. Each marker corresponds to a special challenge. As soon as you have mastered the challenge, you set the corresponding marker aside. This way you keep track of which challenges are still ahead of you.
Attention: Every marker that is still lying beside the game board at the end gives you 2 minus points in the scoring! (Flower markers and green grass markers = 2 minus points each.)
Game End and Scoring
The game ends when you reveal a tile and cannot place it on the game board. For scoring, look at your meadow. It is best to go through first all rows and then all columns:
- Add up the corresponding points for your placed lines of 3. A flower can count for both a horizontal and a vertical line of 3.
- White or red roses in a line of 3 bring you 1 additional point (so 2 points in total).
- For each marker not yet set aside you receive 2 minus points.
- If a level has special bonus points and minus points, you also score these.
The sum of the points is your game result, which you enter in the Challenge booklet.
Example scoring (illustration): you have reached 12 points.
Challenge Booklet
In the Challenge booklet you will find a chapter overview, level descriptions and space to enter your high scores. The chapters each consist of several levels that all build on one another. Play the levels in order to be prepared step by step for the higher chapters.
Under each level are the target points for the Bronze, Silver and Gold status of that level. Enter your achieved score accordingly. If your score is lower than the target points for Bronze, use the bottom row. Start in the first column. You can use the other columns for further results of your own or for other people.
Recommendation: try to reach at least Bronze status before tackling the next level. Of course you can also play each level as often as you like until you reach Gold status.
When you have played all levels of a chapter, enter the total of your best results from each level in the chapter overview. Here too there are Bronze, Silver and Gold statuses to reach.
You can of course also just play for fun, without keeping a record.
... and where are the Black Roses? They need special care and await you in the last chapter. Have fun!
