Menus
All food trucks have 1 matching menu with the logo on the reverse side.
- 4 menu items and their dollar value when plated.
- The ingredient cubes required to plate.
- A reminder of condiment stand ability: any 3 ingredient cubes for $1.
Order Cards
Chefs may serve these customers by plating the orders in line in any order, any turn (page 7). Order cards include 3 important pieces of information:
- A menu item.
- Special modifiers or tips.
- Total dollars earned by food truck.
City Cards
Chefs will find special order cards that represent opportunities and challenges during their shift. Some will be waiting on gameboard corners, others drawn through order-taking. The first chef to progress their meeple to or past the $10, $25, or $35 corners must complete their movement then pick up and activate the city card on that corner.
Upgrade Tiles
Optional cooking tools, employees, and accessories to modify cooking workflows throughout the race. Must be installed inside a truck to be utilized during the race.
Grocery Discs
Colored discs representing the raw ingredients (spices, dough, produce, cheese, protein, and oil) that chefs can prep, turning into ingredient cubes.
Ingredient Cubes
Prepped ingredients ready to cook with. When a prep station is activated by the dice, take cubes matching the grocery disc's color and store them in the mise en place, then use them to plate orders from the menu.
Ingredient cube counts: Spice 24 · Protein 18 · Oil 18 · Produce 20 · Dough 20 · Cheese 20.
Grocery disc counts (for reference, matching the 64 grocery discs): Spice 18 · Protein 8 · Oil 8 · Produce 10 · Dough 10 · Cheese 10.
Race Mechanics
How Many Chefs
Food Truck Race plays with 2-4 chefs. A round is one turn per chef, beginning with the Head Chef (first player) going clockwise.
Once all have taken their turn, all chefs pass their Hangriest Customer (see below) and the Head Chef rolls again.
Turn Sequence
Chefs take turns rolling both dice, passing them clockwise after each turn. Every turn follows the same four steps in order:
- Roll to prep
- Plate orders in line
- Shop
- Pass dice clockwise
Pages 6-9 cover each step.
Hangriest Customer
At the end of every round, all chefs pass their Hangriest Customer, or rightmost order card, including city cards, to the chef on their right. Cards in the middle and back of the line move forward to make room for the new card from the chef on their left. The standee stays with the Head Chef.
End of Race
The first chef to advance their meeple to or past the $50 spot on the gameboard must declare the end of race. They must EITHER call "final round" OR call for an extension to $100.
$50 Race Final Round. A final round begins on the next roll and ends after every chef has had one last turn. Keep counting past $50, 1 space per $1. Continue moving order cards according to Hangriest Customer rules. The chef with the most money after the final turn wins.
$100 Race Extension. All chefs continue operating their food trucks until any chef lands on or crosses $100 (by taking a second lap around the track) and wins immediately.
Setup Your Race
- Give each chef (player): a. 1 food truck board. b. 1 matching food truck meeple. c. 1 matching menu. d. 1 turn sequence / farmer's market card.
- Give each chef these 3 order cards. a. 1 BLUE SNACK (front of line). b. 1 BLUE APPETIZER (middle of line). c. 1 ORANGE DOUBLE APPETIZER (back of line).
- The chef who most recently ate at a food truck is the Head Chef (first player). Give them the Hangriest Customer standee and both dice.
- Place these city cards over these gameboard corners:
- Blue METER MAID on $10.
- Orange TOW TRUCK on $25.
- Orange FOOD INSPECTOR on $35. (City cards are described on page 10.)
- Organize the table: a. Shuffle the small and big order decks separately and set them on the gameboard. b. Arrange all 29 upgrade tiles face up on the board. c. Sort grocery discs and ingredient cubes by color into the 6 takeaway boats near the board. d. Place all meeples on the $5 spot of the gameboard.
$5 Pre-Race Shopping Trip
Starting with the Head Chef, all chefs take turns spending up to $5 each on 1 upgrade tile and grocery discs. Upgrades go on color-matching spaces. Groceries must be placed on food-safe surfaces (dotted line circles).
Chefs track money with their meeple: forward 1 space per $1 earned, back 1 space per $1 spent. Chefs may not pass $0 in reverse.
Once everyone has shopped, the Head Chef rolls both dice to start the race. From here, follow the turn sequence card.
Turn Sequence
Roll to Prep
Every turn begins by rolling both dice. One chef rolls, and every chef preps from that roll.
Prep stations can be equipped with Prep Station upgrades like Big Prep or Rapid Prep to change or increase prep ability. Upgrade tiles are detailed on page 11.
What is prep? Prepping turns grocery discs into ingredient cubes. A station or upgrade tile needs a grocery disc on it in order to prep.
Roll to prep: step by step
- The ABC die picks the active prep station that turn. Chefs must prep the grocery disc(s) on that prep station.
- The 123 die indicates how many. Take that many ingredient cubes from the takeaway boats in the color of the grocery disc(s) in the active prep station.
- Place those ingredient cubes in their mise en place if space permits.
Prep 'em if you got 'em. Chefs take the number of ingredient cubes shown on the 123 die, until their mise en place is full. Example: if the die shows 3 but the chef only has space for 2, they may only take 2.
If a chef's mise en place is full, they may not pick up any ingredient cubes during that prep.
Hangry Mode: After prepping, discard the grocery disc. It's used up. Following the turn sequence, the chef may replace it with a different grocery from the truck if enabled by an upgrade tile or the turn sequence, otherwise buy and place a new one before that station can prep again.
Plate Orders
Chefs may complete (plate) any of their 3 order cards, in any order, on any turn. When completed, advance the meeple 1 space per dollar earned.
If a city card says "stop and do now," follow it right away even if out of turn. If a city card says "cuts to front of line," place that card in the front (right) order card position and move all cards back 1 spot, discarding those that don't fit. Chefs may only draw new order cards when the current turn's plating is done.
Plate orders in line: step by step
- Every order card shows a menu item. Find that item on the menu card. It lists the exact ingredient cubes required. Chefs need all of them in their mise en place before they can plate. No partial orders.
- Return the required cubes to their matching takeaway boats. Discard the completed order card. Move the meeple forward 1 space per $1 shown on the card.
- Slide cards remaining in line to the right to fill any gaps, then draw new order cards (big or small) until the line is full. If a chef draws a city card, follow its instructions right away before drawing more.
Paying fines. Chefs may pay city card fines during plating. An unpaid fine stays in line until the Hangriest Customer pass sends it on. Move the meeple backward 1 space for every $1 spent. Once paid, discard the card and follow its draw instructions.
City cards. The chef who drew the city card must follow its instructions in the flow of play.
Selling condiments. Three for a buck will get you unstuck! Sell any 3 ingredient cubes for $1. They need not match in color.
Shop
On their turn, a chef may purchase one upgrade tile and any number of grocery discs that they can afford and store on food-safe surfaces. Move the meeple backward 1 space for every $1 spent. Chefs may not pass $0 in reverse.
Shop: step by step
- Upgrade tiles are first come, first served from the shared supply. Pay the cost shown on the tile and install it on a matching open upgrade location in the truck. Upgrade locations: a. Prep stations (A, B, or C): prep upgrades like Big Prep, Rapid Prep, and La Plancha. b. Countertop (orange outline, x3): upgrades that do not require power. c. Powered (blue outline, x1): stronger upgrades that require power. If a prep station already has a grocery disc, remove it and return it to any food-safe surface. If none exist, discard the grocery disc.
- Buy grocery discs. Prices are on the Farmer's Market card and on the back of each disc. Place each disc on a food-safe surface (the dotted-circle areas on the truck). One disc per surface unless an upgrade says otherwise.
- Organize truck. On their own turn, or with the help of an upgrade tile like Stage Chef, chefs may move groceries between food-safe surfaces or discard unwanted upgrades or groceries.
- Discard upgrades or groceries. On their turn, chefs may remove any installed upgrades or grocery discs and return them to the shared supply for other chefs to buy. No refunds.
End of Turn, Round and Race
End of turn. Chefs pass both dice clockwise to end their turn. Other chefs may continue to work until the next chef rolls the dice. If the next chef rolls the dice to begin their turn while other chefs are still working, those other chefs are cut off from further work and cannot complete the action on this current turn.
If they complain, give them 1 minute to undo their partly-finished action before moving on.
End of round. After every chef has rolled once, the round ends, which triggers the Hangriest Customer action.
- Slide remaining cards to the right to fill the gap.
- The new card each chef receives enters at the back (leftmost) of their line.
- City cards reset on pass. The receiving chef treats them as newly drawn.
The Head Chef can then roll, beginning the next round of turns.
End of race. The first chef to move their meeple to or past $50 must declare one of two options:
- Final round! Begins on the next roll. Every chef gets one more turn. All chefs keep counting beyond $50 and the Hangriest Customer continues to rotate normally. The chef with the most money after all turns wins. In a tie, the chef who spent the least on upgrades wins.
- $100 Race! The race continues until any chef lands on or crosses $100, immediately winning the Food Truck Race.
Edge cases
- Deck exhaustion. If a deck runs out, remove city cards and shuffle its discard pile to make a new one.
- Running Online Orders and Picnic Table at the same time? Chefs still only get one fourth spot. Whichever played first is the one that counts. The other sits idle until the first one clears.
- Unpaid fines travel. Leave a fine unpaid and that city card rides their line until the Hangriest Customer pass sends it to the chef on their right. The chef who receives it must handle it like they just drew it, fine and all.
- Dead tie. Same money, same spend on upgrades? Still tied? Shake hands, y'all run a hell of a kitchen.
- Paid or passed. Some city cards say to draw after their next prep if the card is paid or passed. Pay the fine and the card is discarded, leaving a gap in the line, so the chef draws. Pass it along and the line is already full, so there's no draw.
City Cards
- Meter Maid (x1). Cuts to the front of the line. Turn the chef's meeple 90 degrees across its space on the board; it's now a roadblock for other chefs. The chef may earn and spend freely, staying 90 degrees as they move past others, but other meeples may not pass them spending or earning. Pay the fine or pass her along during Hangriest Customer motion, then turn their meeple straight and carry on. If paid, discard then draw after next prep.
- Farmer's Market Samples (x2). Do now. Immediately take up to 3 ingredient cubes from the takeaway boats and store them in the mise en place. Cubes do not need to match in color, nor match a chef's current grocery discs. Once complete, discard then draw after next prep. Note: the game includes 1 per order pile.
- Pest (x1). Do now. Immediately count all ingredient cubes in the standard and upgraded mise en place and discard half. If odd, round down. Once complete, discard then draw after next prep.
- Tow Truck (x1). Do now. Immediately tow all meeples that are between $11 and $24 back to the $10 corner. Tow Truck acts before any other sales or purchases when drawn. Once complete, discard.
- Food Inspector (x1). Prep station A and any upgrade tiles on A are unusable until resolved. The chef may not change anything about Prep Station A until paid or passed. Once paid or passed in Hangriest Customer motion, discard then draw after next prep.
Mini Expansion: Picnic Tables & Portapotties
To play with the mini expansion, simply shuffle these cards in before the start.
- Influencer (x1). Occupies a spot in line until the chef plates the next order. Double the total dollar value of the next order card the chef plates, then discard. The chef may draw in the turn sequence.
- Picnic Table (x1). Place over the hood of the food truck to create a 4th spot in line. Cover with any order card currently in line, then draw back up to a full line. The chef may plate that order 2x before discarding it and this card.
- Portapotty (x1). Cuts to the front of the line. The chef may not draw new order cards. If paid, discard and then draw after next prep.
- Trash Bin (x1). Do now. All chefs must discard any order card from their line now. All chefs may draw a replacement order card after next prep.
Upgrade Tiles
There are 3 types of upgrade tiles:
- Prep Station Upgrade Tiles may be purchased and installed over prep stations A, B, or C, and are only activated when that prep station is rolled.
- Powered Upgrade Tiles may be purchased and installed on the blue powered station to the right of the C prep station. The back of each tile details usage.
- Countertop Upgrade Tiles may be purchased and installed on orange-outlined spaces to the right of the mise en place. The back of each tile details usage.
Prep station upgrade tiles have different prices depending on the install location: $5 for prep station A, $10 for B, and $15 for C.
Prep Station Upgrade Tiles
- Big Prep (x4). Install over prep station A, B, or C. The chef may cover it with any 2 grocery discs for "double prep." The chef preps the 2 groceries in the order they prefer until the mise en place is full.
- Rapid Prep (x4). Install over prep station A, B, or C. The chef may stack up to 4 grocery discs. Prep the top grocery disc, then either move it to the bottom of the stack or to another food-safe surface.
Powered Upgrade Tiles
- Pressure Cooker (x1). Load up with 1 grocery disc at the chef's expense. Every turn, prep 1 ingredient cube of whichever grocery disc is on this tile.
- Spice Grinder (x1). Chef preps 2 spice ingredient cubes on every turn. Prep 2 spice ingredient cubes every roll. Must be plugged in to operate.
- Lowboy Fridge (x1). Holds up to 4 ingredient cubes and 3 grocery discs at any time.
- Microwave (x1). The chef may use the microwave once per turn (any turn) to re-roll the ABC die and choose between the two outcomes for their own prep.
- La Plancha (x1). Covers the powered upgrade spot and prep station C. When covered with up to 3 grocery discs and C is rolled, prep all grocery discs according to the 123 die. Cost is $10 despite it covering station C.
Countertop Upgrade Tiles
- Cooler (x2). Store up to 3 grocery discs and 2 ingredient cubes. The chef may move groceries in the organize phase of the turn sequence.
- Whetstone (x1). The chef adds +1 to the 123 die every time A is rolled.
- Steel Wool (x1). The chef adds +1 to the 123 die every time B is rolled.
- Big Mise en Place (x3). Stores up to 4 additional ingredient cubes.
- Fancy Condiments (x1). Sell any 3 ingredient cubes as condiment for $2.
- 86! (x2). The chef may discard any card from their line every turn. Progress the line and draw a new order card.
- Stage Chef (x2). Once per turn, after prep and plating, the chef may move any 2 grocery discs between food-safe surfaces on any chef's turn.
- 3 Order Bonus (x1). The chef receives an extra $5 whenever they plate 3 order cards in a single turn. Includes solving city cards.
- Online Orders (x1). The chef may draw a fourth order card and store it on the hood of the truck. It acts as the 4th in line, and the order card moves with the line as the line progresses. The chef may plate it with the rest of the line, in any order. The chef may draw a new fourth order card in the turn sequence when the position is empty.
- Super Mise En Place (x1). Stores up to 8 additional ingredient cubes at any time. Requires two adjacent countertop spots to operate.
- Sous Chef (x1). Once per turn, after prep and plating, the chef may move up to 4 grocery discs between food-safe surfaces on any chef's turn.
Pop-Up! (Introductory Game)
Chefs, welcome to Pop-Up, a crash course in Food Truck Race mechanics, workflow, and vibe. Pop-Up dining events are designed to give chefs time to practice their new recipes, stress-test cooking workflows, and showcase the food.
As an aspiring food truck chef, new to working in a tight space, you'll need this practice time to ensure you have what it takes before hitting the street. Here, orders don't matter. The goal is to prep and plate as much food as you can. The first chef to cross $10 on the gameboard wins.
Pop-Up! Components
Use only these Pop-Up! components: 1 gameboard; 2 dice; 64 grocery discs; 120 ingredient cubes; 4 Pop-Up food trucks; 4 meeples; 4 menu cards; 4 Farmer's Market cards; 11 upgrade tiles (1 Sous Chef, 1 Super Mise En Place, 3 Big Mise En Place, 2 Big Prep, 2 Rapid Prep, 1 Stage Chef, 1 Cooler); 6 takeaway boats (instructions on page 18).
Pop-Up! Setup
- Give each chef (player): a. 1 Pop-Up food truck. b. 1 food truck meeple. c. 1 matching menu (same color as meeple). d. 1 Farmer's Market card.
- Arranged by color, put grocery discs and matching ingredient cubes into the 6 takeaway boats.
- Arrange the 11 upgrade tiles listed above on the board, then return the remainder to the box.
- Place each chef's meeple on the $5 spot of the gameboard. The chef who has played Food Truck Race the most OR has most recently eaten at a food truck is the Head Chef. Give them the ABC & 123 dice.
Return all order cards to the box during a Pop-Up race.
Pop-Up! $5 Pre-Race Shopping Trip
Before the first roll, every chef goes shopping. Starting with the Head Chef, spend up to $5 each on grocery discs and one upgrade tile. Prices are on each Farmer's Market card. Move a chef's meeple backward 1 space for every dollar they spend, and put each grocery disc on a food-safe surface (the dotted circles in a food truck). Chef recommends: buy the 3 grocery discs that match the 3 ingredient cubes on the menu's appetizer line.
Pop-Up! First 3 Turns
Note from the designer: please consider using the QR code at www.foodtruckracegame.com/play to guide you through setup and your first three turns. Once you've completed the first 3 turns, use pages 6-9 to navigate individual game mechanics.
- Head Chef: turn the dice to A and 1.
- All chefs: check prep station A. For each grocery disc there, take 1 matching ingredient cube and place it in the mise en place.
- Ask: "Does anyone have enough ingredient cubes to plate a menu item?" Wink and say "not yet, let's keep cooking!"
- Got money left? Go shopping. Then pass the dice clockwise.
- Next Chef: turn the dice to B and 2.
- All chefs: check prep station B. For each grocery disc there, take 2 matching ingredient cubes and place them in the mise en place.
- Ask: "Can anyone plate a menu item?" If yes, return those cubes to the takeaway boats and move your meeple forward that dollar amount.
- Shop if you can, then pass the dice clockwise.
- Next Chef: turn the dice to C and 3. Bonus points if you make a C-3PO joke.
- Same pattern: prep, plate, shop, pass.
Pop-Up! How to Cook
Now just follow your turn sequence card.
- Roll to prep (everyone). The ABC die picks the station. The 123 die says how many. Take that many ingredient cubes matching the grocery discs on that station and load up the mise en place. Anything that doesn't fit is discarded.
- Plate any menu items (everyone). Plate menu items by returning the cubes that match the menu to the takeaway boats, and move the meeple forward that dollar amount. Plate as many as ingredients allow. The chef may sell any 3 ingredient cubes for $1; they need not match.
- Shop (only on a turn where you roll). 1 upgrade per turn. All the groceries a chef can afford. Move the meeple backward 1 space per dollar and put groceries on food-safe surfaces. This is a great time to organize the truck by moving around groceries or upgrades as needed.
- Pass dice clockwise (only on a turn where you roll). The next chef rolls.
First chef to cross $10 closes up shop and wins.
Ready for the full race? Flip the food trucks over, pull the rest of the box, and turn to page 5. Here's what's waiting:
- Order cards. Customers line up 3 deep and demand chefs cook what they ask for, not whatever chefs feel like.
- City cards. Meter maids, tow trucks, and a health inspector who does not care that chefs are busy.
- The Hangriest Customer. At the end of every round the front customer walks down to the next truck and a new customer enters the back of each line.
- All 29 upgrade tiles. Even the crunchy weird ones that only professional chefs use.
- $50 to win. Or $100, if someone's feeling brave.
Two Many Trucks (5- and 6-Chef Expansion)
Ready to cook up an even spicier game night? Two Many Trucks is a 5 and 6-chef expansion for Food Truck Race. The next two pages detail the component and gameplay adjustments.
Five & Six Chef Components
- 2 food trucks
- 2 menu cards
- 2 turn sequence / Farmer's Market cards
- 2 food truck meeples
- 30 order cards
- 14 upgrade tiles
- 32 grocery discs (Spice 9 · Protein 4 · Oil 4 · Produce 5 · Dough 5 · Cheese 5)
- 60 ingredient cubes (Spice 12 · Protein 9 · Oil 9 · Produce 10 · Dough 10 · Cheese 10)
- 6 takeaway boats
- 1 ALT-Hangriest Customer (4th player token)
Setup
Refer to page 5 for base game setup instructions. For Two Many Trucks, shuffle in these order cards, combine grocery discs and ingredient cubes by color across 12 boats, and add the 14 new upgrade tiles to the stock. In a 6-chef race, give the red Hangriest Customer token to the Head Chef and the alt-Hangriest Customer standee to Chef 4.
Turn Structure
For 5-chef races, follow the standard turn structure from the base game. For 6-chef races, each pair of chefs will share turns in pairs throughout the race. Each set of 3 turns is 1 round and ends with the Hangriest Customer. During shared turns, the chef that rolled both dice has first choice when shopping.
$5 Shopping Trip
In 6-chef races the $5 shopping trip is taken in shared turns. Head Chef and Chef 4 will both shop first, with the Head Chef getting first choice and Chef 4 getting second choice. Then Chefs 2 and 5, then Chefs 3 and 6. During gameplay, the chef opposite the dice-rolling chef must confirm that they are done shopping and reorganizing before the dice may be passed.
End of 5 and 6-Chef Races
In a 5-chef race, the same base game rule is followed: "each chef gets one more turn." But in the 6-chef version, the rule is "each pair of chefs gets one more turn." Otherwise, follow the base game end of race instructions and good luck!
New City Cards
- Kids Meal (x1). Cuts to the front of the line. The chef may sell any 3 ingredient cubes (that aren't spice) for $3 as a kids meal, then discard. Draw after next prep.
- Scamp! (x1). Cuts to the front of the line. The chef may sell any 5 ingredient cubes for $5 total, then discard. Draw after next prep.
- Power Outage (x1). Cuts to the front of the line. The chef cannot use any powered upgrades while in line. If paid or passed, draw after next prep.
- Look familiar? (x1 and x1, two unlabeled cards). Refer to the base game instructions for these.
Two Many Trucks also adds these order cards (the printed list as shown in the manual; its categories total 25 cards against the 30 order cards stated in the components list above):
- Small orders: 5 Appetizers · 5 Snacks · 3 Double Snacks.
- Big orders: 2 Double Appetizers · 5 Large Entrees · 5 Small Entrees.
