Overview and Goal of the Game
In Flyin' Goblin, you lead an army of Goblins on the assault of a Castle overflowing with riches. Catapult your Soldiers with precision to amass as many Gold Coins as possible or, even better, steal Diamonds!
Gold lets you buy the services of new recruits for your army, making it even more effective. That same gold can also let you buy the different pieces of a Totem which, once fully assembled, proves the superiority of your clan and immediately wins you the game!
If your opponents destroy your Totem and dash your hopes of glory, then go for wealth instead! Gather enough Diamonds, and you will win as well!
Adapt your strategy to the quality of your catapult shots and the accuracy of your opponents: glory or riches, what matters is winning!
Game Components
Castle
All of the pieces listed below make up the Castle:
- 1 box bottom
- 6 Walls
- 1 Floor
- 1 Tower
- 1 Tower bottom
- 1 Balcony
- 8 Roofs
The Floor is visually divided into a grid, presenting the 16 Rooms of the Castle. In addition (which is not a small thing), the Floor keeps the Walls standing.
The Walls remind you of the rewards linked to the Rooms, and hold the whole structure together.
Each Roof can hold: the King token, a Goblin Raider, or one of the pieces of a Totem.
Inside the Tower is the Tower bottom, reminding you of the rewards when a token falls into it. On the Balcony is a reminder of the bonus it grants to whoever holds it.
Army Boards
The Army boards are all identical, except for their color. They show the cost of each piece available for purchase, as well as a Recruitment Zone in the top left.
- x4 Army boards (1 per color)
Catapults
The pride of goblin technology, the Catapults let you send Goblin Soldiers and Captains into the Castle through the air.
- x4 Catapults (1 per color)
Goblin Soldier Tokens
These tokens are sent — or rather, catapulted — into the Castle to apply the effect of the Room they land in. Only two of them are available at the start of the game; the rest must be bought.
- x20 Goblin Soldier tokens (5 per color)
Goblin Captain Tokens
Like Goblin Soldiers, these tokens are catapulted into the Castle, but they are not available to players at the start of the game and must be bought.
- x4 Goblin Captain tokens (1 per color)
Goblin Raider Tokens
After being bought, these tokens are placed on the Roofs of the Castle during the game, and let you earn Diamonds. They are not catapulted.
- x8 Goblin Raider tokens (2 per color)
Totem Tokens
Each Totem is made up of 4 tokens that must be bought and placed on a Roof in the Castle. Fully building your Totem is one of the two possible victory conditions.
- x4 Totem tokens (1 per color)
Coin Tokens
Coins let you buy the tokens available on your Army board. At any time during the game, you may make change using Coins of different values.
- x20 Coins of value 1
- x40 Coins of value 2
Diamonds
Gathering enough Diamonds is one possible victory condition. 1 large Diamond is equal to 5 Diamonds. At any time, you may make change.
- x40 normal Diamonds
- x10 large Diamonds
King Token
The King is collateral damage in the assault on the Castle. The player who knocks him down gets the Balcony bonus.
- x1 King token
Assembling and Disassembling the Game
Before your first game, assemble the different pieces of the Castle as shown in the diagrams below.
- The Balcony sits above the Tower, with the King on top.
- The Tower holds the Tower bottom.
- 3 Walls without a cellar and 3 Walls with a cellar form the sides.
- The 8 Roofs sit on top of the Walls.
- The Floor is the base.
Once the game is over, only the Tower needs to be disassembled and stored under the Floor to close the box. The Walls and Roofs always stay in place, even for storage. Store the Diamonds, Coins, tokens, Army boards, and Catapults in the hold beneath the Floor, or leave them in the Rooms of the Castle. No Goblin will come and steal them while you're not playing — promise!
Setup
-
Assemble the Castle as described in Assembling and Disassembling the Game, and place it at the center of the table, equidistant from all players, so that each player faces a different side of the Castle.
-
Place the Tower bottom inside the Tower. Then place the Balcony on top, and the King on top of that.
-
Distribute the value-1 Coin tokens roughly evenly among the 2 Rooms marked with a Coin symbol on the Wall, and the value-2 Coin tokens among the 4 Rooms marked with a Coin symbol on the Wall.
-
Each player chooses a color and takes their Catapult, Army board, and 2 Goblin Soldier tokens of that color and places them in front of themselves, in their own space.
-
Place the 3 remaining Goblin Soldier tokens, the Goblin Captain token, 2 Goblin Raider tokens, and the 4 Totem tokens of your color in the spots indicated on your Army board.
We recommend leaving your Army board slightly to the side, and reserving the area directly in front of you — called "your space" — for handling your Catapult.
-
Distribute all the Diamonds roughly evenly among the 2 Rooms marked with a Diamond symbol on the Wall and in the Tower.
Course of the Game
A game of Flyin' Goblin is played over a series of rounds, until a player reaches at least one of these two victory conditions during the End-of-Game Conditions phase:
- The 4 tokens of your Totem are on a Roof,
OR
- You have reached the required number of Diamonds.
Structure of a Round
Each round is played through the following phases:
- Catapulting. All players simultaneously catapult their available Soldiers and Captain into the Castle.
- Looting. Taking turns, recover your Goblins by applying the effect of the Rooms they landed in.
- End-of-Game Conditions. Check whether at least one player has reached an end-of-game condition.
- Recruitment. Taking turns, you may buy pieces from your Army board.
1. Catapulting
At the signal given by the youngest player, all players simultaneously catapult their available Soldiers and Captain one at a time, without waiting for your turn, sending them into the Castle while aiming as best you can for the various Rooms.
Goblin technology must be handled with care. Use your Catapult while always respecting the following rules:
- Your Catapult must always remain in the space between you and the box. This space is as wide as the box.
- You may only catapult your available tokens that are located in your space. If they don't land in either the Castle or your space, they are lost for this round.
- As soon as you have no more available tokens of your color in your space, say "I'm done!" The other players continue the Catapulting phase until all players but one have finished (and announced it). That last remaining player then gets to make one final catapult shot for this round.
Then move on to the Looting phase.
Goblin tip!
By standing a Soldier or Captain upright on the Catapult, it will follow an arcing trajectory, letting you aim precisely for a Room, or even the Tower.
By laying a Soldier or Captain down flat on the Catapult, it will follow a straighter, flatter trajectory, letting you aim precisely at an opponent's token on a Roof.
2. Looting
Starting with the first player to have announced "I'm done!" during the Catapulting phase, then continuing clockwise, on your turn follow all of these steps in full:
- If you knocked the King off his Balcony or off a Roof with a throw, place him back on a Roof of your choice. Then take the Balcony tile and place it in front of you. If no Roof is available, put the King back on his Balcony tile atop the Tower.
- Earn 1 Diamond for each of your Raiders on its Roof, whether standing or lying down.
- Recover your Soldiers and Captain that fell in the Castle. You must apply the effect of every Room concerned, if possible. Recover these tokens in the order of your choice. If a token did not clearly land in a Room, recover it without applying an effect.
- Recover your Raider tokens that fell off their Roof, and place them back on your Army board.
- Recover all of your Totem tokens that fell off their Roof, except one (the highest of those), and place them back on the Roof they fell from. Place the highest of the ones that fell back onto your Army board.
- Place in front of yourself all of your available Soldier and Captain tokens, except those that fell into a Recruitment Room, which must be placed in the Recruitment Zone.
- Stand back up and re-center on its Roof any Totem, Raider, or King token that was bumped, knocked over, or slid slightly without actually falling.
Balanced Tokens
It is normal for a token to fall off a Roof during the Catapulting phase. However, if a token falls off a Roof during another phase because of an unlucky bump against a table leg or a loose sleeve, immediately put the fallen tokens back in place.
You may all perform this phase simultaneously, as long as there is no conflict over turn order. If a conflict arises, follow the normal turn order.
As soon as all players have completed their Looting phase, move on to the End-of-Game Conditions phase.
Effects of the Different Rooms
- Banquet Hall: Gain 1 Coin of value 1.
- Vault: Gain 1 Coin of value 2. You may make change at any time using the Coin tokens from the Castle.
- Prison: Steal 1 Diamond from another player, if possible.
- Armory: Place this token in the Recruitment Zone of your Army board.
- Machine Room: Rotate the Castle on itself as many quarter-turns as you like.
- Guard Room: Lose 1 Diamond. Put it back in the Castle. If you don't have one, nothing happens.
- Treasure Room: Gain 1 Diamond. You may make change at any time using the large Diamonds, which are equal to 5 Diamonds.
- King's Chamber: Gain 3 Diamonds taken from the Castle. Take 2 more if you have the Balcony tile in front of you.
- Throne Room: Put 1 Diamond back into the Castle to gain 3 Coins of value 1 taken from the Castle. If you cannot pay, gain nothing.
- Pantry: Put 2 Coins of value 1 back into the Castle to gain 2 Diamonds taken from the Castle. If you cannot pay, gain nothing.
The Different Tokens
Goblin Soldiers
During the Looting phase, the Goblin Soldier activates the Room it landed in.
Goblin Captains
During the Looting phase, the Goblin Captain activates the Room it landed in twice (if possible).
Goblin Raiders
Each of your Goblin Raiders earns you 1 Diamond during each Looting phase in which it is on a Roof. If it falls into a Room from its Roof, place it back on your Army board, where it must be bought again during Recruitment to return to a Roof.
Totem
The Totem is a complete victory condition in its own right. It must be built entirely on a single Roof, over one or several rounds. If a Totem token is placed back on the Army board after falling, it must be bought again during Recruitment to return to a Roof.
It is possible for a middle Totem token to fall off the Roof while the tokens that were below and above it remain balanced on the Roof. When you buy back this middle token, put it back in its usual place in the Totem.
3. End-of-Game Conditions
Check whether at least one player meets one of the following end-of-game conditions:
- The 4 tokens of your Totem have remained on their Roof.
- You have 20 or more Diamonds, in a 2-player game. You have 25 or more Diamonds, in a 3- or 4-player game.
If so, move on to End of the Game. Otherwise, move on to the Recruitment phase.
4. Recruitment
Starting with the first player to have announced "I'm done!", then continuing clockwise, on your turn you may buy tokens from your Army board.
You may buy 1 token per round. In addition, for each token in your Recruitment Zone (i.e. tokens that fell into the Armory this round), you may buy one additional token (two for the Captain).
- To buy a Goblin Soldier or the Goblin Captain, pay the cost shown on the Army board by putting the Coins back into the Castle, then take the token and place it in front of you. This token is now always available at the start of every future Catapulting phase.
- To buy a Goblin Raider, pay its cost, take the token, then place it on an available Roof. If no Roof is available, you cannot buy a Goblin Raider.
- To buy a Totem token from your board, pay the cost of the lowest token and place it on an available Roof. If no Roof is available, you cannot buy the first Totem token. You must buy Totem tokens from the bottom up, each time placing the new token on top of the previous one.
As soon as you have finished your purchases, take back the tokens in your Recruitment Zone in front of you.
It is then the next player's turn to carry out their Recruitment phase. As soon as all players have done so, a new round begins with the Catapulting phase.
End of the Game
To determine the winner, check the following conditions one after another, until a winner is declared.
- If only one player meets the Totem victory condition, they win!
- If several players meet the Totem victory condition, the winner is whoever has the most Diamonds. If there is a tie among the leading players, they share the victory!
- If only one player meets the Diamond victory condition, they win!
- If several players meet the Diamond victory condition, the winner is whoever has the most Diamonds. If there is a tie among the leading players, they share the victory!
