Overview Diagram

The "How to Play" sheet opens with a diagram titled "Esquema Básico" (Basic Layout). Its captions read:

  • Basic Rules card: in the center of the table, with the Action discard pile (labeled "face up") beside it.
  • New Rules cards: when you play a New Rule, place it next to the Basic Rules in the center of the table.
  • Goal card: when you play a Goal, place it in the center of the table.
  • Keepers: when you play a Keeper, place it on the table in front of you.
  • Action card: do what the Action card says, then place it on the discard pile.
  • Draw 1, Play 1: the Basic Rules instruction shown on the Basic Rules card.

Getting Started

Place the card that says "Basic Rules" in the center of the table, shuffle the deck, and deal three cards to each player. Place the deck face down next to the Basic Rules card. This will be the pile you draw new cards from (the draw pile). At the start of the game there is no Goal and no New Rule on the table yet.

The person who draws a card first starts the game. Follow the Basic Rules, and adapt the game as New Rules are played. Players take turns, clockwise, drawing and playing the cards indicated, until someone fulfills the Goal in play. New players can join at any time. They are dealt their first three cards as soon as they want to play.

If the draw pile runs out, take the discard pile, shuffle it, and place it face down to form the new draw pile. Keep playing. If you are not sure how to play a card, read aloud what the card says, and then play it.

What to Do on Your Turn

  1. Draw the number of cards currently required.
  2. Play the number of cards currently required.
  3. To meet the hand limit (if there is one), place the necessary cards from your hand (the cards you hold in your hand) on the discard pile.
  4. To meet the Keeper limit (if there is one), place the necessary Keepers from the table in front of you on the discard pile.

Types of Cards

BASIC RULES: This is the starting point, the base on which the rest of the game is built. These initial rules will be replaced by New Rules during the course of the game, but this card must remain on the table at all times. The Basic Rules are: on your turn, draw one card and play one card (there is no hand limit and no Keeper limit).

NEW RULE: To play a New Rule, place it face up next to the Basic Rules. If it contradicts another New Rule that is in play, place the previous New Rule on the discard pile. New Rules take effect immediately, so all players must follow the instructions of the New Rule right away. This will often make the player whose turn it is draw or play additional cards, or make the other players discard a Keeper or cards from their hand onto the discard pile.

GOAL: To play a Goal, place it face up in the center of the table. If there is another Goal on the table, discard it. At the start of the game there is no Goal, so nobody can win until one is played.

KEEPER: To play a Keeper, take it from your hand and place it face up on the table in front of you. Since most Goals require you to play a particular pair of Keepers in order to win, playing Keepers in general is a good thing.

ACTION: Action cards are used once and then discarded. Follow the instructions on the card, and then place it on the discard pile. Some Actions will require additional cards to be played; everything that happens as a result of an Action card is considered "one play". It is also possible for an Action to have no effect on the game.

What Is Discarding?

Discarding a card is not the same as playing it. When a card is discarded, it is thrown onto the discard pile. When a card is played, all of the instructions on the card must be followed, if possible. Unwanted cards cannot be discarded; you only discard when there is a hand limit. (This means you may be forced to play a card that makes someone else win.)

Who Wins?

The game continues until a player meets the conditions of the Goal in play. The player wins immediately, regardless of whose turn it is.
