Components

The game contains 66 cards: 48 clue cards, 12 + 4 element cards and 8 mission cards, plus one set of rules.

All the cards that have a dividing line on their reverse must be cut into two before the first game (see figure 1).

Each player also needs a slip of paper and a pen or pencil. The players can make notes on the paper during the game.

Fig. 1: The cards. The figure shows a clue card, an element card, a mission card, and an element card (site of wreck).

Outline of the Game

The players first choose one of the scenarios and then take the clue cards needed for that scenario. These clue cards are then dealt to the players and according to their cards the players will each choose a mission card.

With the help of the information on the clue cards the players try to solve their mission and find out which ship is sunk at which location.

The player who solves his mission first is the winner.

Preparation

The element cards showing the sites of the wrecks are laid out in the middle of the table as shown in Fig. 2.

The 12 element cards and the 8 mission cards are spread out face up on the table.

Before starting to play the correct set of clue cards must be sorted out:

  • On the bottom of each clue card there is a series of letters. Each letter corresponds to a set of cards.
  • If the players have chosen scenario 'A' all the clue cards with the letter 'A' (A) will be needed, etc.
  • As the sets consist of varying numbers of cards it makes sense to select a set according to the number of players.

Note

  • Deal out the cards so that all the players have the same number of cards.
  • Any cards left over form a draw-pile and are placed in the middle of the table.
  • The individual scenarios vary in their degree of difficulty.

The Game for Two or More Players

1st Phase

Choose a start player and in clockwise order each player selects a mission card.

Tip: With 2-4 players, only lay out the mission cards of one type - names of the ships or sites of the wrecks.

Place your mission card in front of you. The task of the players is to fulfil their mission. For example, if a player has taken the name of a ship, he must discover what cargo that ship was carrying, what type of ship it is, as well as where and at what depth the wreck lies. If a mission card with the site of a wreck was taken, the player must discover which ship of what type was wrecked there, what its cargo was and what depth it is lying at.

2nd Phase

The start player asks the player to his left whether he has a card of a particular type (depth, cargo, type of ship, name of ship, site of wreck) or element (e.g. Almiranta, Capitana).

E.g.: The player asks: 'Have you a card for the Almiranta type of ship?'

If the questioned player has such a card he must give it to the active player (the questioned player now has one less card in his hand). The turn has now ended.

However if the questioned player does not have a card of this sort then the next player in clockwise order with such a card must hand it over. If none of the players have a card of the sort requested then the active player can make a second request (but not a third). After that his turn is ended.

The next player in clockwise order then has their turn.

3rd Phase

At the end of the round (every player has taken a turn) a card from the draw pile is turned face up so that all the players can see it. The information on this card can be used by everyone in order to help them solve their mission.

In order to better understand the information on the card the players can use the element cards to illustrate it.

E.g.: The clue card 'The ship type Nao carried silver' is turned over. The players place the element card 'Nao' and the card 'Silver' next to one another.

E.g.: The clue card: 'The Dutch Sloop lies in the southern area' is turned over. The players place the element card 'Dutch Sloop' next to the areas of St. Lucie and Ft. Pierce Inlet.

The players can use the displayed information to help solve their mission.

If there is no draw pile or it has been used up, this phase is omitted.

End of the Game

If a player believes that he has solved his mission, he writes down the solution on his slip of paper and places this face down in the middle of the table. This player is now 'passive' only, i.e. if he is asked for a card by another player and he has one, he must give it.

Once another player believes he has solved his mission, he also places his solution face down on top of the first slip of paper. The game continues until all the players have handed in their slip of paper.

The slips of paper are then turned over together. The player whose solution is correct (see Solutions) and whose slip of paper is closest to the top is the winner of the game.

The Game for One Player

A set of cards is chosen as in the game for several players. Shuffle this set of cards and place them face down in front of you. Now draw cards one at a time from the deck in order to solve the logic problem. You try to find out which ship is sunk where, at what depth the wreck lies, what cargo it had on board and what type of ship it is.

The 16 element cards can be used to help you solve the problem.

E.g.: In order to illustrate the card, "The Almiranta lies in 15ft deep water", place this clue card and the element cards "Almiranta" and "15ft" next to each other.

Explanation of the Clue Cards

The wrecks can lie in four different areas:

  • Sebastian Inlet - Pelican Island - St. Lucie - Ft. Pierce Inlet
  • Sebastian Inlet and Pelican Island lie in the northern area, St. Lucie and Ft. Pierce Inlet are in the south.
  • If a card indicates that two wrecks lie next to each other then they are both either in the southern area or both in the northern area.
  • The ships are of the types Nao, Almiranta, Capitana and Dutch Sloop.
  • The wrecks are in depths of water of 15ft, 16ft, 20ft or 22ft.
  • The ships are called San Miguel, N. Sn. de la Regla, N. Sn. del Carmen and Concepción.
  • The ships carried gold coins, silver, jewelry and Chinese porcelain.
