Components
A rulebook, 18 cards (each one with two different pictures), 1 "VIP Ticket" card to break ties and 2 Reference cards.
Set Up
Shuffle the 18 cards and deal 3 face-down cards to each player who will keep them in hand secretly. Then, draw 2 cards from the deck and place them facing up in the middle of the table to create the Pool. The remaining cards will be the face-down drawing deck. The person who eats the most popcorns gets the "VIP Ticket" card and place it in their playing area.
Object of the Game
To be the player with the most tickets sold at the end of the game.
Note: For a more cinematographic experience, we recommend you to play best of 3 games.
How to Play
A game of Films consists of 8 rounds (10 if played with the expansion). Each round has a Bidding phase, a Choosing phase and a Placing phase.
1. Bidding Phase
Each player chooses a card from their hand and place them face down on the table. Then, they reveal them at the same time.
2. Choosing Phase
The player with the lowest number on their played card (numbers represent the shooting weeks) chooses first one of the two cards from the Pool. In case of a tie, the player with the "VIP Ticket" chooses first (the "VIP Ticket" is passed to your opponent every time it breaks a tie, except for the "Press Officer" effect).
3. Placing Phase
Place the chosen card in your playing area, to the right of the cards already there from previous rounds, creating a row. The exception to this rule is the "Movie Studio" card (see Card Effects further on).
When placing a card in your playing area, you may place it in any of the two ways (some characters don't follow this rule). Once it is placed, only the top half of the card will be valid (the bottom half is ignored). Only the top effects of your cards in your playing area are applied.
If it is a card with an immediate effect (see cards with immediate effects further on), its effect is applied immediately. Then, draw a card from the drawing deck to have 3 cards in hand again.
Finally, the card left on the Pool is handed to your opponent, who follows the steps on the Placing Phase. The two cards played during the Bidding Phase form the new Pool. Then, a new round begins and players continue playing until there are no cards left in hand.
At the end of the game, each player will have 8 cards in their row (10 cards if played with the expansion), except if any of them have been removed by playing "Shooting Problems". It is possible that players could have fewer cards due to the effect of some cards. The last two cards (the ones forming the new Pool) are removed from the game.
End of the Game
At the end of the game, each player counts the tickets gained by the cards and their effects in your playing area, as well as the "VIP Ticket" (it counts as a ticket to the player who has it). The player with the most tickets will be the winner. In case of a tie, the player with the "VIP Ticket" will be the winner.
Card Effects
- Tickets: Gain 1 or 2 tickets.
- VIP Ticket: 1 ticket for the final scoring. If there is a tie, the player with the VIP card wins.
- Award: Gain 2 tickets.
- Script: Gain 5 tickets if you have 2 scripts at the end of the game.
- Movie Poster: Gain 1 ticket + 1 ticket for every Award in your playing area.
- Bad Review: Lose 1 ticket for each bad review.
- Shooting Problems: (immediate when placing it) Choose and remove from the game one of your opponent's unprotected cards.
- Movie Studio: Protect some of your cards from the "Shooting Problems" effect. Place them to the left of your playing area. Then, and before revealing the face down played cards, you may move a maximum of 2 or 3 cards from your row to the left of the "Movie Studio" in order to protect them.
Effects and Scoring of the Character Cards
You cannot have repeated characters in your playing area (except for the Leading Actor/Actress). If you choose a card of a character you already have or with a Movie Studio, having one in your row, you must place that card in the opposite way.
- Director: Gain 1 ticket for each character in your playing area, including him.
- Production Coordinator: Gain 1 ticket for every "Shooting Problems" in your playing area.
- Producer: Gain 1 ticket for each "Ticket" card in your playing area.
- Leading Actor/Actress: Gain 3 tickets for each "Bad Review".
- Editor: (Immediate) You may swap one card from your hand for one in your playing area, including the Editor.
- Press Officer: (Immediate) Get the "VIP Ticket", which won't be passed to your opponent during ties. Place the "VIP Ticket" under the "Press Officer" card as a remainder.
- Scriptwriter: In future rounds, and before revealing the face down played cards, you may rotate a card in your playing area (including the Scriptwriter) and activate its "immediate" effect if it has one. Move it down to show it has been used.
If you don't use Scriptwriter, gain 1 ticket for each 2 Scripts in your playing area. A "Movie Studio" with cards on its left side cannot be rotated. If both players have a Scriptwriter and they want to use them during the same round, the player with the "VIP Ticket" goes first.
