Components
- A scenario of 4 separate chapters, each containing 16 cards:
- 13 Fil Rouge cards, 1 of which is a Starting card with a ball of yarn on the back
- 3 Solution cards, with the letters A, B and C on the back
- One Debrief / Player aid card
To play Fil Rouge you'll need 3 Tokens. Find 3 small items in your vicinity which are small enough to fit onto a card and can be used as Tokens during the game. This way, something that belongs to you can be part of the story!
Setup
- Take the set of cards for the 1st chapter. DON'T LOOK AT THE CARDS BEFORE THE START OF THE GAME.
- Set the 3 Solution cards A, B and C aside without looking at them. Place your 3 Tokens and the player aid next to them.
- Turn over the Starting card in the middle of the table. This card will be the anchor point of your journey to recreate the Timeline. However, it's important to note that this card could be positioned anywhere in the Timeline...
- Distribute the 12 remaining Fil Rouge cards one by one, without revealing them. Each player should have an equal amount of cards. Pick up your cards and look at them, but never show them to the other players!
During the Game
Your goal as a group is to play all the cards in the correct order and recreate this chapter's story. There are no fixed turns: everyone is free to describe and play their cards whenever they like!
Describing Cards
You can say anything you like about the cards in your hand. You can describe them, make gestures, share how you interpret the life of the characters, and even talk about your own feelings: anything is possible! The other players will surely ask you questions, in order to better understand what you're looking at.
Playing Cards
When they think the time is right, one of the players can choose to play one of their cards face up. The card must be placed immediately before or after the row of cards already in the Timeline. Careful: inserting a card between two other cards is not allowed!
Once a card has been placed, it can no longer be moved, except by giving up 1 Token.
Closing the Chapter
Once the chapter's 13 cards have been placed, choose a player to recite the entire story out loud. The goal is to make sure everyone agrees. If that's not the case, you still have time to reposition the cards by using your remaining Tokens!
Then, remove the 3 Tokens from the game. You will get them back at the start of the next chapter!
Solution
It's time to check whether you managed to recreate the story's Fil Rouge! You will do this by revealing Solution cards A, B and C one after the other. The red thread running through each of these cards will tell you the correct order of the 13 Fil Rouge cards.
- Start by revealing Solution Card A. It will tell you the order of the chapter's first 5 cards. The red loops will highlight the details that could have helped you.
- If the order you guessed is correct: congratulations! Reveal the next Solution card.
- If the order you guessed is incorrect: reposition the cards as indicated, then check off an error box on the table of the Debrief card. If after that, you feel like some cards are still placed incorrectly, you may freely reposition them (you don't need any Tokens for this). Then, reveal the next Solution card.
- Repeat the process for Solution card B, then C.
After revealing the 3 Solution cards, keep them face up next to you and proceed to the next chapter.
End of the Story
At the end of chapter 4, look at the Debrief card (on the back of the player aid).
