Important Notice
These instructions contain reference information and answers to the most common questions players may have throughout the game. To start a game, take the ordered deck (from 1 to 68) and, without shuffling, read the first card and follow the instructions on it.
Legend
Keep this booklet nearby until you have memorized the meaning of all the icons.
- A resource icon (with a plus sign) on a card's top-right corner — draw a random card that has the matching icon in its top-right corner and add it to the bottom of the pile in your hand.
Important! When an icon has a number before it (for example, "4x" a hand icon), take all the cards with that icon (the number tells you the total number of cards with that icon in the deck), shuffle them, and place them at the bottom of your pile. If you had to discard your previous pile from your hand, use the drawn cards as your new pile.
Example: When you choose an option, first add 1 point to your ENERGY level and remove 2 points from your FOOD level. Then flip the card over to its other side (top to bottom). Immediately read the text on the top half of the card.
Icon Reference
- Green "+" circle: Add 1 point to the corresponding level on the COUNTER by moving it.
- Red "−" circle: Remove 1 point from the corresponding level on the COUNTER by moving it.
- "#" (number sign): Take the card with the indicated number from the Story deck or the ITEMS deck and read it.
- Sideways-flip icon: Flip the card over to its other side, left to right.
- Top-to-bottom flip icon: Flip the card over to its other side, top to bottom.
- Discard icon (X): Discard this card — place it at the bottom of the Story deck on the table if it is a Story card, or return it to the ITEMS deck if it is an item card (hand icon).
- Move-to-back icon: Move this card to the bottom of your pile.
- Keep-on-top icon ("!"): Leave this card on top of your pile.
- Discard-pile icon (X in a box): Discard your entire pile of cards from your hand (place them at the bottom of the Story deck on the table), except for the card(s) you were just instructed to draw. Leave collected ITEMS on the table unless you are explicitly told otherwise.
- Keep-in-front icon (curved arrow): Keep this card on the table in front of you.
How to Play
- Hold the pile of cards in your hand. Look only at the top half of the card. First, apply the changes to the corresponding level values if their icons are present, then read the introductory text at the top of the card.
- Choose one of the available options.
- Option locked to conditions: You may only choose this option (if you want to) if you meet the required conditions — having or not having a certain item, or one of your markers showing a specific value on the corresponding level.
- Option with highlighted instructions: Some options will have instructions called out in the text in addition to the icons. If you choose this path, you must follow these instructions first, and only afterward do what the icons require.
- Apply the effects of each icon next to the option you chose, in the order they are listed.
- Stop here. Do not read the bottom half of the card.
Notice! All Story cards have numbers on the front so that the cards needed can be easily found in the deck, and so they can be returned to their original location at the end of the game. Most cards have an additional icon next to the number. Take these cards from the deck when you are instructed to do so.
Worked Example
"You enter a narrow thicket." A small animal is thrashing about in the roots of a tree. You try to grab it, but it quickly hides in a burrow. Apparently, you startled all the creatures in the thicket.
You find plants with plump tubers. You don't know if they're edible, but you are hungry enough to take the risk.
Only with a KNIFE: You cut the bark off the tree and find nutritious grubs underneath. However, your knife gets stuck in the trunk and breaks in half. Discard the KNIFE.
The reverse side of this card reads: "Take the SHELTER card." Build a shelter to protect yourself from the wind and cold nights.
FAQ
1. I accidentally shuffled the cards / I received the game with the cards already shuffled. How do I return the deck to its original state? Arrange the cards in ascending order from 1 to 68. Then start the game by reading card number 1.
2. There is an icon before the card's introductory text. What does this mean? Example: "−(safety icon) You enter a narrow thicket. 72(tree icon)" — you must apply the change to the corresponding level as indicated first. After that, read the text on the card.
3. Where, and in what order, should I add a new Story card? New Story cards must always be inserted at the bottom of your pile before you begin carrying out the actions of the card you just read. Imagine you have the following sequence of instructions: first, you need to add a random card with a hand-and-safety icon to the bottom of your pile (shuffle all the cards with this icon, draw one of them, and return the rest of the cards to the deck). After that, move your SAFETY marker down 1 level (if this causes your SAFETY to reach zero, immediately add a random "S" card to the bottom of your pile and return the SAFETY level to 3, following the instructions on the COUNTER). Finally, flip and move the current card according to its icons.
4. I need to add a card with a certain icon to my pile, but the deck has no more cards available with that icon. What should I do? There are rare cases where the deck runs out of cards with a particular icon. If all the cards with that icon are already in your pile or have already been discarded, simply ignore the instruction to add the card(s).
5. I chose an option that requires an item I already have. Do I need to discard the item I used? If the card does not give you a specific instruction to discard an item, keep it on the table: you may use the same item multiple times. Keep the item even when you start a new chapter, unless the instructions say otherwise.
6. I noticed that at some point I flipped (and/or moved) a card incorrectly. What should I do? Going back in the game can be complicated. Don't worry about it — just keep playing! Pretend your character bumped their head and is a little disoriented.
7. I want to take a break and finish the game later. What is the best way to arrange the cards so they don't get mixed up? Stack the cards in the following order, from top to bottom:
- (A) all the items you have collected (do not flip these cards);
- (B) your pile (in exactly the order and orientation you are holding it);
- (C) your current COUNTER (without changing the marked levels);
- (D) the ITEMS deck;
- (E) whatever remains of the deck, with the discarded Story cards.
To resume the game:
- Spread out on the table the item cards you had collected (which are on top of the deck);
- Return your pile to your hand (all the Story cards that were in front of the COUNTER, along with its markers);
- Place the COUNTER on the table in front of you;
- Then separate the ITEMS deck from the rest of the cards;
- Finally, position both decks on the table so you can retrieve cards from them when needed.
You're ready to continue your game!
