Game Overview
Fashion Police offers three game modes: two competitive and one cooperative. Regardless of which, players are first given a theme and then place (combine, layer, rotate, etc.) their randomly drawn pattern cards under clothing templates to design outfits that match the theme—that's so haute.
Game modes:
- Dress for the Occasion — competitive; 3–6 players (see Dress for the Occasion). Themes are revealed and players are secretly assigned one for which they design an outfit. Once presented, players guess which outfit goes with which theme. Points are rewarded for correct guesses made and received. After three rounds, the player with the most points wins!
- Editor's Request — competitive; 3–6 players. One player (the Editor) selects one theme for which all other players design an outfit. Once presented, the Editor then selects their favorite, rewarding that player a point. After all players have had a chance to be the Editor, the player with the most points wins!
- Design Team — cooperative; 2–6 players. One player (the Fashion Police) closes their eyes as themes are revealed. All other players decide between themselves who should design an outfit for which theme. Once presented, the Fashion Police guesses which outfit goes with which theme. A point is rewarded for being completely correct. See how well you can do as a design team!
"Dress for the Occasion" is recommended for your first game.
Components
- 12 Clothing Templates (cutouts; do NOT throw away the cutouts from the Clothing Templates)
- 60 double-sided Pattern Cards
- 6 Theme Selection Cards
- 6 Theme Selection Tokens (A–F; cutouts from Clothing Templates)
- 6 Scoring Tokens (cutouts from Clothing Templates)
- 100 Scoring Sheets
Dress for the Occasion
3–6 players
Setup
- Each player takes 1 Scoring Sheet and writes the names of all other players (pencils not included).
- Shuffle the 60 Pattern Cards into a deck. Each player draws 5 cards with the pattern side face up.
- Draw 6 Pattern Cards and place them with the theme side face up within view of all players. Then place the 6 A–F Theme Selection Tokens under the cards, creating an "A theme," a "B theme," etc.
- Place the 12 Clothing Templates in two groups, one for tops and one for bottoms.
- Shuffle the 6 Theme Selection Cards and deal one to each player face down. Any unused are placed off to the side face down. *This assigns each player one of the 6 themes. Theme Selection Cards should not be revealed to the other players.
- The 6 Scoring Tokens can be returned to the box.
How to Play
Select Your Templates
The player with the most colorful socks is the first player (or choose randomly). Each player secretly looks at their Theme Selection Card, noting their assigned theme. From the first player moving clockwise, each player selects one Clothing Template—top or bottom. Then from the last player moving counterclockwise, each player selects a second.
*In a 6-player game, each player must choose one top and one bottom. In 3 to 5-player games, players may choose any combination. Mix and match!
Design Your Outfit
Each player places their Pattern Cards under their Clothing Templates to design an outfit that they think best matches their theme.
*The most skilled designers combine, layer, and rotate their patterns. Patterns may protrude outside the templates to create accessories or specific looks, and the templates can even be flipped or rotated. Work it!
*Don't reveal your theme just yet!
Fashion Police is on the Case
Once finished, place each outfit within view of all players. Without discussion, each player guesses which player dressed for which theme by writing A–F (not including your own) under their names on the scoring sheet.
Scoring and Game End
From the first player moving clockwise, the Theme Selection Cards are flipped over one by one, revealing the correct answers.
Mark each correct guess with a check mark icon and record the number of players who correctly matched your outfit to your theme. Each player's total score for the round is their number of check mark icons and recorded number added together.
Play a new round by discarding the 6 themes, drawing new ones, and redealing the Theme Selection Cards. Each player discards the Pattern Cards they used, keeping any unused ones, and then draws new ones back up to 5 total. If there are not any remaining, shuffle the discarded Pattern Cards to create a new deck. Finally, the next player to the left becomes the first player.
After three rounds, the player with the most points wins!
*In the event of a tie, the player with the most check mark icons wins. If still tied, the victory is shared.
Editor's Request
3–6 players
Setup
- The player with the boldest glasses is the Editor (or choose randomly).
- Shuffle the 60 Pattern Cards into a deck. All other players (not including the Editor) draw 5 cards with the pattern side face up.
- Place the 12 Clothing Templates in two groups, one for tops and one for bottoms.
- Take the same number of Scoring Tokens as there are players and place them within reach.
- The 6 Theme Selection Tokens, 6 Theme Selection Cards, and Scoring Sheets can be returned to the box.
How to Play
Editor Makes Their Request
The Editor draws 5 Pattern Cards and chooses one theme for which all other players design an outfit. The Editor is also welcome to create their own theme!
Select Your Templates
From the player to the left of the Editor moving clockwise, each player selects one Clothing Template—top or bottom. Then from the last player moving counterclockwise, each player selects a second.
*Players may choose any combination of tops and bottoms.
Design Your Outfit
Each player places their Pattern Cards under their Clothing Templates to design an outfit that they think best matches the Editor's Request.
Runway Walk
Once finished, from the player to the left of the Editor, each player "walks the runway"; that is, they may describe their outfit and try to convince the Editor why theirs best matches the Editor's Request. After viewing each outfit, the Editor selects their favorite and awards that player 1 Scoring Token.
Scoring and Game End
The player to the left becomes the next Editor. A new round begins by each player discarding the Pattern Cards they used, keeping any unused ones, and then drawing new ones back up to 5 total. If there are not any remaining, shuffle the discarded Pattern Cards to create a new deck.
After all players have been the Editor once, the player with the most Scoring Tokens wins!
*In the event of a tie, play one last round with only the tied players designing outfits and a random player being the Editor.
Design Team
2–6 players
Setup
- The player with the loudest accessory is the Fashion Police (or choose randomly). They then close their eyes, leave the room, etc., making sure they do not know which Pattern Cards, Clothing Templates, or Theme Selection Cards all other players have.
- Shuffle the 60 Pattern Cards into a deck. All other players (not including the Fashion Police) draw 5 cards with the pattern side face up.
- Draw 6 Pattern Cards and place them with the theme side face up within view of all players. Then place the 6 A–F Theme Selection Tokens under the Pattern Cards, creating an "A theme," a "B theme," etc.
- Place the 12 Clothing Templates in two groups, one for tops and one for bottoms.
- Place the 6 Theme Selection Cards and 6 Scoring Tokens within reach of all players.
- The Scoring Sheets can be returned to the box.
How to Play
Select Your Themes and Templates
With the Fashion Police closing their eyes or outside the room, all other players discuss between themselves who should select which Theme Selection Card that they will design an outfit for and which Clothing Templates. Players may look at their Pattern Cards, but should be careful that their discussions do not reveal clues to the Fashion Police.
*In a 2-player game, the one player decides their theme and templates for themself. If desired, they may also design more than one outfit to increase game difficulty.
Design Your Outfit
Each player places their Pattern Cards under their Clothing Templates to design an outfit that they think best matches their theme.
Fashion Police is on the Case
Once finished, place each outfit within view of the Fashion Police. Without discussion, the Fashion Police guesses which player dressed for which theme.
From the player to the left of the Fashion Police moving clockwise, the Theme Selection Cards are flipped over one by one, revealing the correct answers. If the Fashion Police guesses all outfits correctly, the team receives 1 Scoring Token.
Scoring and Game End
The player to the left becomes the next Fashion Police. Play a new round by discarding the 6 themes and drawing new ones. Each player discards the Pattern Cards they used, keeping any unused ones, draws new ones back up to 5 total, and then returns their Theme Selection Card. If there are not any Pattern Cards remaining, shuffle the discarded ones to create a new deck.
After six rounds (some players may be Fashion Police more than others), see how many Scoring Tokens you have earned!
