Quickstart Guide 1: The Greenhorn Level

Set Up

  1. You won't need the Twist of Fate or Show cards
  2. Layout the Show Grounds
  3. Place the Goods tokens & Horse Figures nearby
  4. Shuffle the Horse cards and deal 4 Horses to each player
  5. Place 8 Horse cards face-up on the Show Grounds
  6. Choose 1 Guest Ranch mat
  7. Take 4 Food and 4 Tack
  8. Take 3 Dice of the same color
  9. Take 1 Ranch Tile
  10. Place 1 Location token on each Location of your Ranch Tile (except your Home)
  11. Remove 1 Location Token for free to start
  12. Take 1 Horse Figure for each of your Horses and place them on your Ranch Tile
  13. Give the 1st Player token to the 1st player

Playing the Game

Fantasy Ranch is played in Rounds: Every round each player takes 1 turn then everyone enters 2 Shows.

After the Shows return to the Player turns.

The player with the most Horses and Locations after the Finals is the winner!

On your turn you can take 1 action:

Buy 1 Horse from the Show Grounds

  • Pay the Food on the Horse card
  • Take the Horse card
  • Take 1 Horse Figure to match. Place it on your Ranch tile

OR Take any 6 Goods from the bank

OR Buy 1 Location on your Ranch Tile

  • Pay the Tack on the Location token
  • Remove the Token
  • Move your Horse Figures into the Location

On your turn you can also:

  • Sell Horses for the Food on the card
  • Move Horse Figures on your Ranch tile
  • Trade Food or Tack at 2 Goods for 1 Good

Your turn is over: Once you have completed all of the actions you wish to take, your turn ends.

Shows

All Shows have the same steps:

  • Enter 1 of your Horses with a Show Symbol that matches the show
  • Roll the number of dice shown on the Horse's show symbol on their card
  • Select your highest roll
  • The highest roller is the winner! (If there is a tie compare your other dice)
  • Award prizes listed on the bottom of the Show
  • Cover the Show round with a Show card once they are completed then return to the Player turns

The Finals

The Finals are just like other shows except:

  • Only World class Horses can enter
  • There are 3 Shows in a row
  • Everyone gets Horses as a prize
  • Choose your Horse in place order
  • Do not refill the Show Grounds until the end of the show

Ending the Game

After the Finals the game is over: Count your Horses and Locations you bought. The Highest score is the winner!

Game Pieces Cheat Sheet

Game Icons: Each Icon Counts as 1 of that Item (Food, Tack, Horse, Trophy).

Show Skill Icons: Working Cattle, Western Games, Western Pleasure, Trail, Dressage, Driving, Eventing, Hunter Jumper, World Western, World English, World Driving.

Cards - Horse Cards: Cost; Location Icon; Name & Breed; Buddy Icon; Show Skills. Location colors are numbered 1-3 on the card.

Ranch Tiles: 1. Location Icon; 2. Home Space; 3. Maximum Horses; 4. Trophies. Each tile has Locations (Range, Pasture, Paddock, Runout, Barn) and a Home. Ranch tile pieces: 1. Horse Figures; 2. Location Icons; 3. Location Tokens.

Player Mats:

  1. The name of your Guest Ranch!
  2. A summary of the actions you can take
  3. A place to keep your Goods tokens.
  4. You'll only need this for Levels 2 & 3

Show Grounds: 1. Sales Barn - Spaces for Horses; 2. Show Rounds - Each column is 1 round (Show Rounds 1-4, each with Shows such as Barrel Racing, Roping, Trail, Western Pleasure, Eventing, Dressage, Jumping, Driving; each Show has 1st-4th place prizes).

Quickstart Guide 2: The Wrangler Level

Set Up

  1. Remove all of the cards marked with the Level 3 icon from the Twist of Fate deck. Shuffle the rest and make a face down deck
  2. Layout the Show Grounds
  3. Place the Goods tokens & Horse Figures nearby
  4. Shuffle the Horse cards and deal a hand of 4 Horses to each player
  5. Choose 1 Horse from your hand then pass the rest of the Horses to the player on your left. Continue until everyone has 4 Horse cards
  6. Place 8 Horse cards face-up on the Show Grounds
  7. Choose 1 Guest Ranch mat
  8. Take 4 Food and 4 Tack
  9. Take 3 Dice of the same color
  10. Take 1 Ranch Tile
  11. Place 1 Location token on each Location of your Ranch Tile (except your Home)
  12. Remove 1 Location Token for free to start
  13. Take 1 Horse Figure for each of your Horses and place them on your Ranch Tile
  14. Give the 1st Player token to the 1st player

Note: in the printed guide step 1 shows an icon in place of the words "Level 3 icon"; the Twist of Fate card legend on the same guide labels that icon "Level 3 Icon". Step order was reconstructed from the guide's two-column layout.

Playing the Game

Fantasy Ranch is played in Rounds: Every round each player takes 1 turn then everyone enters 2 Shows.

After the Shows return to the Player turns.

The player with the most Horses and Locations after the Finals is the winner!

To start your turn: Draw 1 Twist of Fate card. Place it in front of you. If you meet the conditions on the card you can gain the reward immediately. If you do not; then keep the card to try to use it later.

On your turn you can take 1 action:

Buy 1 Horse from the Show Grounds

  • Pay the Food on the Horse card
  • Take the Horse card
  • Take 1 Horse Figure to match. Place it on your Ranch tile

OR Take any 6 Goods from the bank

OR Buy 1 Location on your Ranch Tile

  • Pay the Tack on the Location token
  • Remove the Token
  • Move your Horse Figures into the Location

On your turn you can also:

  • Complete Twist of Fate cards

Trophies

You can get Trophies from Buddies, World Horses, Locations, Owning your Ranch, and Twist of Fate cards.

  • Buddies: Match Buddy symbols on the Horses to gain Trophies. 2 Matching Buddy symbols = 1 Trophy. 3 Matching Buddy symbols = 2 Trophies.
  • World Horses: Each World Horse has a Trophy where standard Horses have Buddy symbols. Each World Horse is 1 Trophy.
  • Locations: Each Location you buy is 1 Trophy.
  • Own your Ranch: Buying all of the Locations on your Ranch is the number of Trophies listed on your Home Space.
  • Twist of Fate cards: Some Twist of Fate give you 2 Trophies as a Reward.

Quickstart Guide 3: The Boss Level

Set Up

  1. Layout the Show Grounds
  2. Shuffle all of the Twist of Fate cards. Place 4 cards face-up near the Show Grounds then make a face-down deck
  3. Place the Goods tokens & Horse Figures nearby
  4. Place 8 Show cards over the Show Rounds on the Show Grounds
  5. Shuffle the Horse cards and deal a hand of 6 Horses to each player. Choose 1 Horse from your hand then pass the rest of the Horses to the player on your left. Continue until everyone has 4 Horse cards. Discard the rest
  6. Place 8 Horse cards face-up on the Show Grounds
  7. Choose 1 Guest Ranch mat
  8. Take 4 Food and 4 Tack
  9. Take 3 Dice of the same color
  10. Place 4 Ranch tiles for 2 players and 6 Ranches for a 3/4 players in a group near the Show Grounds
  11. Place 1 Location token on each Location of the Ranches (except the Homes)
  12. Give the 1st Player token to the 1st Player
  13. In reverse turn order choose 1 of the Home spaces on the Ranch tiles. Place your Owner token there
  14. Remove 1 Location Token on your Ranch for free
  15. Take 1 Horse Figure for each of your Horses and place them on your Ranch Tile
  16. In turn order choose 1 Employee

Playing the Game

The player with the most Trophies after the Finals is the winner!

Buy 1 Horse from the Show Grounds

  • Pay the Food on the Horse card

  • Take 1 Horse Figure to match. Place it on your Ranch tile

OR Take any 6 Goods from the bank

OR Buy 1 Location You can buy any Location touching a Location you already own or have Horses in

  • Pay the Tack on the Location token
  • Gain the Reward immediately
  • Remove the Token
  • If it is not on your Home Ranch tile place one of your Ownership tokens on it
  • Move your Horse Figures into the Location

On your turn you can also:

  • Complete 1 of the Twist of Fate cards. You must meet the Requirement to take the card
  • Sell Horses for the Food on the card
  • Move Horse Figures on your Ranch tile
  • Claim Free Buildings with Upgrades
  • Trade Food or Tack at 2 Goods for 1 Good

Employees

  • Use 1 Employee Token on your turn
  • Use the power of your Employee for free
  • Or you can pay 2 Goods to another player to use their Employee's power

Board Horses You can place your Horse figures in another player's Location. Place your Board token with it. If you add more Horses than the owner then you claim the Location.

Your turn is over: Once you have completed all of the actions you wish to take, your turn ends. Return your Employee and take a different one.

Shows

All Shows have the same steps:

  • Enter 1 of your Horses with a Show Symbol that matches the show
  • Roll the number of dice shown on the Horse's show symbol on their card
  • Select your highest roll
  • The highest roller is the winner! (If there is a tie compare your other dice)
  • Award prizes listed on the bottom of the Show
  • Upgrades decrease the cost of Locations by -1
  • The winner of the second Show in the round takes the First Player token
  • Flip over the Show card once it is completed then return to the Player turns

The Finals

The Finals are just like other shows except:

  • Only World class Horses can enter
  • There are 3 Shows in a row
  • Everyone gets Horses as a prize
  • Choose your Horse in place order
  • Do not refill the Show Grounds until the end of the show
  • You can Board horses you win in the Finals

Ending the Game

After the Finals the game is over: Count your Trophies. The player with the most Trophies is the winner!

Trophies

You can get Trophies from Buddies, World Horses, Locations, Owning your Ranch, and Twist of Fate cards.

  • Buddies: Match Buddy symbols on the Horses to gain Trophies. 2 Matching Buddy symbols = 1 Trophy. 3 Matching Buddy symbols = 2 Trophies.
  • World Horses: Each World Horse has a Trophy where standard Horses have Buddy symbols. Each World Horse is 1 Trophy.
  • Locations: Each Location you buy is 1 Trophy. Each Location on another player's Ranch is 1 Trophy.
  • Own your Ranch: Buying all of the Locations on your Ranch is the number of Trophies listed on your Home Space.
  • Twist of Fate cards: Some Twist of Fate give you 2 Trophies as a Reward.

Single Player

Single Player follows most of the same rules as The Boss Level. You will need to read the Boss Level instructions then apply these variations:

Set Up

  • Make a community of 4 Ranch tiles.
  • Place 8 Show cards over the board shows.
  • Fill the Sales Barn with Horse cards.
  • Place 4 Twist of Fate cards over the Sales Barn.
  • Remove 5 Twist of Fate cards from the deck: The Bandit, Horse Trader, Private Sale, Ride it Like You Stole it and Horse Poor.
  • Take 4 Horse cards from the Sales Barn. Only replace the Horse cards once you have all your horses.
  • Choose a Ranch to start on. Pick 1 Location on the tile and remove the Location token. Put your Horse Figures on your tile.
  • Start with 4 Carrots and 4 Boots.

On Your Turn

Complete 1 Action: Buying Horses and Locations works the same. Farming only gives you 2 Goods.

Use 1 Employee: Use 1 Employee on your turn. You can only use an Employee once per game. Once you use an Employee set it aside.

Use 1 Twist of Fate card

Reset a Column: At the end of your turn you'll discard 2 Horse cards and 1 Twist of Fate card from the Sales Barn. Roll 1 dice at the end of each turn to decide which cards to discard. Refer to the reset roll column diagram (columns 1-4 of the Sales Barn, each with 2 Horse cards and 1 Twist of Fate card). If you roll a 5 or 6 then reroll. Draw new cards to replace the discarded cards.

For example, if you roll a 4 discard Sunny Horse card, Rebel Horse card, and the Home on the Range Twist of Fate card. Then draw new cards.

Shows

Enter Shows using the same rules as the full game. Roll your dice and place based on your score.

Local Show Scores

  • Roll 5/6: 1st place
  • Roll 3/4: 2nd place
  • Roll 1/2: 3rd place

World Show Scores

  • Roll 6: 1st place
  • Roll 5/4: 2nd place
  • Roll 1-3: No Prize

Scoring

Add up your score and see where you rank!

  • Greenhorn: 1-19 Trophies
  • Wrangler: 20-24 Trophies
  • Boss: 25+ Trophies

Single Player Reference Sheet

Use the attached checklist to keep track of your actions! Single Player Checklist: for each Turn (#1 to #5): Your Action, Employee, Twist of Fate, Reset Roll. Do your Action, Employee and Twist of Fate in any order. Complete the rest of the checklist in order.

Scoresheet: Buddies; World Horses; Twist of Fate; Locations; Home Bonus; Tile Bonus; Show #1, #2, #3; Total.

Trail Ride Variant: Quickstart Guide - The Buckaroo Level

  7. Place 4 Horses face up near the board. This is the Sales Barn. Place the deck nearby
  8. Choose a player to go first

Playing the Game

On Your Turn: Roll your dice

  • Move on the track the number of spaces you rolled
  • Go any direction you want at forks
  • You must move towards the camp in the top right of the board
  • Jump over other players

Activities

You will complete the activity you land on. Other players may take part on some of the spaces.

Show Spaces: All shows play the same. Everyone can enter every show!

  • Roll 1 dice
  • The highest roll wins the show
  • The winner gets 1 Horse card from the Sales Barn

Trade Spaces: Trade 1 of your Horses with the Sales Barn or any other player

  • Discard your Horse and take one from the Sales Barn

OR

  • Give your Horse to another player and they must choose one of their horse to give to you

Horse Spaces: Take 1 Horse from the Sales Barn

  • Refill the Sales Barn with the next Horse in the deck

Rest Spaces: Nothing happens - your turn is over

Ending Your Turn

After the activity you landed on is over, the next player's turn begins.

Ending The Game

The first player to reach the camp ends the game

  • They get 2 Horses from the Sales Barn as a reward

How to Win

The player with the most Horses wins!

Ties: If you tie then the tied players all win!

Trail Ride Variant: Quickstart Guide - The Novice Level

Set Up

You won't need any of the pieces not mentioned here to play. You can leave them in the box!

  1. Layout the Trail Ride board
  2. Choose 1 of the Player Mats
  3. Take 4 Food
  4. Take 3 dice of the same color
  5. Choose a Cowboy and place it on the Start in the bottom left of the board
  6. Pull out the 8 Foal cards; stack them near the board
  7. Shuffle the Horse cards
  8. Deal 4 Horses face up to each player (Starting Horses)
  9. Place 4 Horses face up near the board. This is the Sales Barn. Place the deck nearby
  10. Choose a player to go first

Playing the Game

On Your Turn: Roll your dice

  • Move on the track the number of spaces you rolled
  • You can move forward or back on the track
  • Go any direction you want at forks
  • Jump over other players

Activities

  • Pay the Carrots shown on the Horse card

Market Spaces: Buy a Horse from the Sales Barn OR another player OR the Foal stack.

  • Pay the Carrots shown on the Horse card
  • If you buy a player's horse they get the Carrots

Foal Spaces: Take the top Foal in the stack

Food Spaces: Take the amount of Food shown

Trade Spaces: Trade 1 of your Horses with the Sales Barn or any other player

  • Discard your Horse and take one from the Sales Barn

OR

  • Swap 1 Horse with another player

Raffle Spaces: Everyone can enter Raffles

  • Roll 2 dice
  • Choose your highest roll
  • The highest roller gets 1 Horse from the Sales Barn
  • If you tie then reroll until there is a winner

Rest Spaces: Nothing happens - your turn is over

Ending Your Turn

  1. Layout the Trail Ride board
  2. Choose 1 of the Player Mats
  3. Take 4 Food
  4. Take 3 dice of the same color
  5. Choose a Cowboy and place it on the Start in the bottom left of the board
  6. Pull out the 8 Foal cards; stack them near the board
  7. Shuffle the Horse cards
  8. Deal 4 Horses face up to each player (Starting Horses)
  9. Place 4 Horses face up near the board. This is the Sales Barn. Place the deck nearby

  • Enter 1 of your Horses - Choose the highest Show Skill you have that matches the show
  • Show Skill 1: Enter 1 dice. Show Skill 2: Enter 2 dice. Show Skill 3: Enter 2 dice.
  • Roll your dice and choose your highest roll
  • The highest roll wins the show
  • The winner gets 2 Food as a prize

Buy Spaces: Buy 1 of the Horses in the Sales Barn

  • Pay the Carrots shown on the Horse card
  • Refill the Sales Barn with the next Horse in the deck

Market Spaces: Buy a Horse from the Sales Barn OR another player OR the Foal stack.

  • Pay the Carrots shown on the Horse card
  • If you buy a player's horse they get the Carrots

Foal Spaces: If you own a mare (female horse) then you can take the top Foal in the stack

Food Spaces: Take the amount of Food shown

Trade Spaces: Trade 1 of your Horses with the Sales Barn or any other player

  • Discard your Horse and take one from the Sales Barn

OR

  • Swap 1 Horse with another player

Raffle Spaces: Everyone can enter Raffles

  • Roll 2 dice. If you have a horse with a 3 Show Skill you can roll 3 dice instead!
  • Choose your highest roll
  • The highest roller gets 1 Horse from the Sales Barn
  • If you tie then reroll until there is a winner

Obstacles: You can only cross these spaces if you have a Horse with a matching Home symbol

  • If you don't have a horse you must turn around
  • You can only pass obstacles in 1 direction
  • Follow the horseshoes
  • If you land on obstacles nothing happens

Rest Spaces: Nothing happens - your turn is over

Ending Your Turn

After the activity you landed on is over, the next player's turn begins.

Ending The Game

The first player to reach the camp ends the game

  • They get 2 Horses from the Sales Barn as a reward

How to Win

The player with the most points wins!

How to Earn Points

  • Horses: Each horse is 1 point
  • Buddies: If you match Horses with the same Buddy symbol you gain 1 point for each symbol. (Example: all of these Horses have a Buddy Symbol so they would score 3 bonus points)
  • Trophy Horses: Horses with a Trophy are worth 1 bonus point

Ties: If you tie then the player with the most horses win!
