Components

  • 4 orchestra boards
  • 1 drawstring bag
  • 26 score cards
  • 1 popularity card
  • 11 contest cards: 1 conductor card, 4 soloist cards, 3 pianist cards, 3 harpist cards
  • 56 fairy tokens: 12 trumpeter, 12 drummer, 12 violinist, 12 horn player, 8 composer
  • 16 honor tokens: 4 conductor, 4 soloist, 4 pianist, 4 harpist
  • 56 random cards

Game Overview

At the start of the game, each player is dealt 6 fairy tokens. From those, each player adds 1 to their own orchestra and passes the rest to the player on their left. Repeat this: once each player's orchestra has gained 6 fairy tokens, deal 6 more fairy tokens to each player.

Continue adding members to your orchestra in the same way. The game ends when the orchestras have reached 12 fairy tokens. Each game uses a different way of calculating points, and the player with the highest total score wins.

Setup

Note: this game may involve drawing the wooden pieces (fairy tokens) from the bag. The shapes of the wooden pieces differ slightly depending on the type. For a more precise game, you can play using the random cards method described on page 9.

Note: the setup and rules that follow are for 3 or more players. If you want to play with 2 or 1 player, read these rules first, then refer to the changes listed on page 9 and after.

  1. Each player takes 1 orchestra board and places it in front of them. Return any leftover orchestra boards to the box.
  2. Shuffle all score cards together and deal 2 face down to each player. Each player checks their own cards, making sure the other players cannot see them.
  3. Place the remaining score cards face down as a draw pile within reach of all players. Leave space beside it for a score card discard pile.
  4. Place the popularity card and the conductor card side by side where everyone can see them.
  5. Randomly choose 1 each of the soloist cards, pianist cards and harpist cards, and place them face up in a row next to the conductor card. Return the unchosen contest cards to the box.
  6. Prepare 1 honor token of each of the 4 kinds (conductor, soloist, pianist, harpist) for each player, and place each set next to its matching card. Return any leftover honor tokens to the box.
  7. Put all fairy tokens into the bag.
  8. Draw 1 fairy token at random from the bag and place it on the popularity card.
  9. Each player draws 6 fairy tokens at random from the bag and keeps them all in hand, without showing other players which tokens they hold. Then place the bag within reach of all players.

Example of setup for a 4-player game (see the page 3 illustration).

Round Overview

The game is divided into 2 large rounds. In each round, players place a total of 6 fairy tokens, on their own orchestra board or on their score cards.

Round 1

The draft, which is the procedure of choosing 1 fairy token from those in hand, is repeated 6 times.

First Draft

  1. From the fairy tokens in your hand, secretly choose 1 that you want to add to your orchestra. Do not let other players see it.
  2. Also from the 2 score cards dealt during setup, secretly choose 1 that you want to keep. Do not let other players see it.
  3. Reveal the chosen fairy token and the chosen score card at the same time.
  4. Place the revealed score card face up beside your orchestra board. Place the score card you did not choose face up on the score card discard pile.
  5. Place the revealed fairy token on the space of your orchestra board that has the icon matching that token. The revealed fairy token has now joined your orchestra.

Exception: During any draft (the first draft or later, in round 1 or round 2), if you select and reveal a composer from your hand, you immediately draw 2 cards from the score card draw pile. Keep 1 of them and place it face up beside your orchestra board, and place the other face up on the score card discard pile. Place the revealed composer fairy token on the composer space of the score card you just gained. The composer on a score card is also a member of your orchestra. There is no limit to the number of score cards you may keep beside your orchestra board.

  1. When everyone has finished all of the steps above, pass all remaining fairy tokens in your hand to the player on your left. Each player holds all the fairy tokens received from the player on their right.

Second and Later Drafts

Follow the same flow as the first draft: add 1 fairy token to your orchestra and pass the rest to the player on your left. However, the step of choosing 1 of the 2 score cards dealt during setup is not done in the second and later drafts.

In the 6th draft, add the last fairy token passed to you from the player on your right to your orchestra.

When a total of 6 fairy tokens have been added to your orchestra, round 1 ends.

Round 2

Each player draws 6 new fairy tokens from the bag and holds them in hand.

Repeat the "second and later drafts" procedure from round 1 six times. When 6 more fairy tokens have been added to your orchestra, that is, when your fairy tokens (including the composer on a score card) total 12 together with round 1, round 2 ends and final scoring is carried out.

Final Scoring

Each player calculates points for the following 7 items in order, referring to the kinds and number of fairy tokens in their own orchestra.

Note: each fairy token in your orchestra may be counted once for each card's scoring.

1. Popularity Card

Check how many fairy tokens of the kind shown on the popularity card are in your orchestra. Gain 1 point for each one.

2. Conductor Card

In your orchestra, check which kind of fairy token is most numerous. Gain 2 points for each fairy token of that kind. If 2 or more kinds are tied for the most, refer only to the number of one of those kinds.

Then, the player (or all players, if there is a tie) with the highest score from the conductor card takes the conductor honor token and places it on the conductor space of their orchestra board.

3. Soloist Card

Gain points using the calculation method shown on the soloist card chosen during setup. The soloist card shows one of the following four methods:

  • Method A: In your orchestra, check which kind of fairy token is least numerous (ignoring kinds with 0 tokens), and gain 4 points for each fairy token of that kind. If 2 or more kinds are tied for the fewest, refer only to the number of one of those kinds.
  • Method B: In your orchestra, check the kind with the most fairy tokens and the kind with the fewest (ignoring kinds with 0 tokens). Subtract the number of the fewest kind from the number of the most kind, and gain 3 points for each difference of 1. If 2 or more kinds are tied for the most or the fewest, refer only to the number of one kind in each case.
  • Method C: Divide the fairy tokens in your orchestra into groups by how many tokens of each kind there are. Find the group with the most kinds of fairy token, and gain 3 points for each kind in that group. If 2 or more groups are tied for the most kinds, refer only to the kinds of one of those groups.
    • Example: Your orchestra has 2 trumpeters, 2 drummers, 2 violinists, 5 horn players and 1 composer. These fairy tokens form 3 groups: a group of 1 (the composer), a group of 2 (the trumpeter, drummer and violinist), and a group of 5 (the horn players). The group of 2 has the most kinds, 3 kinds, so you gain 3 kinds × 3 points = 9 points.
  • Method D: Divide the fairy tokens in your orchestra into groups by how many tokens of each kind there are, and gain 3 points for each group.
    • Example: With the same orchestra as above, there are 3 groups (a group of 1, a group of 2 and a group of 5), so you gain 3 groups × 3 points = 9 points.

Then, the player (or all players, if there is a tie) with the highest score from the soloist card takes the soloist honor token and places it on the soloist space of their orchestra board.

4. Pianist Card

For the pianist card chosen during setup, count how many sets of the kinds of fairy tokens shown on the card are in your orchestra. Gain 3 points for each set.

Then, the player (or all players, if there is a tie) with the highest score from the pianist card takes the pianist honor token and places it on the piano space of their orchestra board.

5. Harpist Card

For the harpist card chosen during setup, count how many sets of the kinds of fairy tokens shown on the card are in your orchestra. Gain 3 points for each set.

Then, the player (or all players, if there is a tie) with the highest score from the harpist card takes the harpist honor token and places it on the harp space of their orchestra board.

6. Score Cards

For each score card beside your orchestra board, check whether your orchestra contains the kinds of fairy tokens and the number of each shown on the card, or more. If it does, gain 5 points. You cannot score a score card if even 1 of its required fairy tokens is missing.

Note: each fairy token in your orchestra may be counted once for each score card.

7. Honor Tokens

Gain 2 points for each honor token on your orchestra board.

Add up the points from all 7 items. The player with the most points wins. If there is a tie, the tied players share the victory.

Playing with Random Cards

For a more precise game, you can play without drawing fairy tokens from the bag, by using random cards. The random cards have the same composition as the fairy tokens. The game is played almost the same way as usual, with the following changes:

  • During setup, do not put the fairy tokens into the bag. Instead, sort them by kind and place them face up within reach of all players. This is called the supply.
  • Shuffle all the random cards together and place them face down as a draw pile. Leave a space beside the pile for a random card discard pile.
  • Every step where a fairy token would be drawn from the bag is replaced by drawing the top card of the random card pile. Look at the kind of fairy shown on the face of the drawn card, take a fairy token of that kind from the supply, and continue the game. Place each drawn random card face up on the random card discard pile.

Two-Player Rules

When playing with 2 players, the draft is done in a different way from games with 3 or more players. The game consists of 4 rounds in total.

Setup: Set up as usual.

Round 1

  • In the first draft, from the 6 fairy tokens in your hand, choose 2: 1 to add to your orchestra, and 1 to remove from the game. Also choose 1 of the 2 score cards dealt during setup to keep.
  • Reveal the chosen fairy tokens and cards to your opponent at the same time. After removing the fairy token chosen to be removed from the game, process the rest as usual, and pass the remaining fairy tokens in your hand to your opponent.
  • In the second and third drafts, too, process in the same way as the first draft, except that there is no step involving the score cards dealt during setup (you choose 1 fairy token to add and 1 to remove each time).
  • When 3 fairy tokens have been added to your orchestra, round 1 ends.

Rounds 2 to 4

  • At the start of round 2, each player draws 6 new fairy tokens from the bag and holds them in hand. Draft in the same way as the second and later drafts of round 1.
  • Rounds 3 and 4 are processed in the same way as round 2. Each round adds 3 fairy tokens to your orchestra.
  • When a total of 12 fairy tokens have been added to your orchestra, the game ends.

Final scoring: Calculate final scores in the usual way and determine the winner.

Solo Rules

Aim to defeat the invisible opponent Pahha. The game consists of 7 rounds in total. In these rules, the player is called "you", and the invisible opponent is called "Pahha".

Setup

Set up as usual, with the following changes:

  • Apart from your own orchestra board, prepare 1 orchestra board for Pahha and place it within reach.
  • Pahha holds only 1 score card. Draw 1 card from the score card draw pile without looking at its face, and place it face down beside Pahha's orchestra board.
  • Prepare 2 of each honor token (the 4 kinds: conductor, soloist, pianist, harpist).
  • You draw only 2 fairy tokens from the bag and hold them in hand. Pahha does not draw fairy tokens.

Round 1 (Solo)

  1. From the 2 fairy tokens in your hand, add 1 to your orchestra and add the remaining 1 to Pahha's orchestra.
  2. Also choose 1 of the 2 score cards dealt during setup to keep, and place it face up beside your orchestra board. Place the score card you did not choose face up on the score card discard pile.

Note: Pahha also gains score cards from composer fairy tokens, in the same way as you do. Each time a composer is added to Pahha's orchestra, draw 1 card from the top of the score card draw pile, without looking at its face, and place it face down beside Pahha's orchestra board. Place the composer fairy token on that score card.

This completes round 1.

Rounds 2 to 7 (Solo)

From round 2 onward, draw the number of fairy tokens from the bag shown in the table below. Add the number shown for your orchestra to your orchestra, and add all of the remaining fairy tokens to Pahha's orchestra.

Round(1)234567
Draw from bag(2)345642
Added to your orchestra(1)122321
Added to Pahha's orchestra(1)223321

Note: if 2 or more composer fairy tokens join your orchestra in the same round, score card gains are processed one composer at a time, in order. For example, if 3 composers join your orchestra in round 5, first draw 2 score cards from the pile, keep 1, and place the other on the discard pile. Repeat this procedure 2 more times.

After round 7 ends, proceed to final scoring. At this point, you have 12 fairy tokens in your orchestra, and Pahha has 14 fairy tokens in its orchestra.

Final Scoring (Solo)

Calculate the points for you and for Pahha separately, using the usual method.

The only exception: Pahha gains 3 points for each face-down score card it holds, whether or not the card's requirements are met. To gain an honor token, you need to score at least as many points as Pahha on the corresponding card.

If your total score is higher than Pahha's, you win. If your total score is lower than Pahha's, or the same, you lose.
