Goal

Expose other players and collect Wallets. You win if you are the only player left unexposed or you acquire 7 Wallets.

Terms

  • Surrounding: tiles that are adjacent to your tile, including diagonally adjacent.
  • Touching Sides: tiles that are orthogonally adjacent, not including diagonally adjacent tiles.

Setup

  1. TILES:

    • a. For a 2-player game, remove any Guests that have 3+ or 5+ in the lower-right corner and then create a 4x4 grid of the rest of them with the unexposed (blue) side up.
    • b. For a 3-4 player game, remove any Guests that have 5+ in the lower-right corner and then randomly create a 5x5 grid of the rest with the unexposed (blue) side up.
    • c. For a 5-6 player game, use all Guests and put them in a 6x6 grid with the unexposed (blue) side up.
  2. WALLETS: Add 1 Wallet to each Guest tile. Add a second Wallet to corner Guest tiles.

  3. IDENTITY CARDS:

    • a. Remove Identities:
      • i. For a 2-player game, remove any Identity Cards that have a 3+ or 5+ in the upper-right corner.
      • ii. For a 3-4 player game, remove any Identity Cards that have a 5+ in the upper-right corner.
    • b. Take the rest of the cards, shuffle them, and deal one randomly to each player face-down. This tells you which Guest you are. Don't tell anyone -- this is a secret.

The item ability on your Identity card can never be used. Only items from stolen marks are used.

  4. MARKS:

    • a. Draw Marks:
      • i. For a 2-player game, draw 2 random Identity cards and place them next to the playing area.
      • ii. For a 3-4 player game, draw 3 random Identity cards.

Turn Structure

(1) Action Phase

On your turn, you must take one of the following 4 actions:

MOVE - Do this twice: Choose two tiles that share a side and swap their location. You may not reverse a player's last move.

STEAL - Take a wallet from a Guest tile that surrounds your tile. If you are unexposed, put this Wallet in your Stash. If you are exposed, put it on your Guest instead.

If the tile matches one of the Mark cards, do the following:

  • Flip the Mark's Guest tile to its exposed side.
  • You may immediately use the item's effect shown on that Mark card.
  • Discard the Mark card. (You will replace it during the Clean Up Phase.)

Notes:

  • You may steal from yourself.
  • If a Mark has more than one Wallet on it, you only need to Steal 1 Wallet to trigger the item ability.
  • Removing a Wallet from a Mark because of an item ability does not allow you to trigger the Mark's item ability unless it specifically says you are doing it with the Steal action.

EXPOSE - Choose a tile in the row or column of your tile and flip it to its exposed side. If a player was exposed, see the If You Are Exposed section. Note: You may NOT expose yourself.

SNITCH - Use only if you are unexposed. Show your Identity card to another unexposed player of your choice and flip any Guest tile to its exposed side. You then put your Identity card face-down in front of you -- you are still unexposed but someone knows your identity. If a player was exposed, see the If You Are Exposed section. Note: You may NOT snitch on yourself.

(2) Clean Up Phase

  1. Move any Mark cards whose Guest tile has no Wallets on it to the Discard pile.
  2. Draw new Marks:
    • a. Draw enough Mark cards to replace any that were discarded this turn. If you draw a new Mark card that has no Wallet on its Guest tile, discard that Mark card, expose its Guest tile, and draw a new card.
    • b. Move Mark tokens so there is one on each Guest tile of the Mark cards in play.
  3. Play proceeds clockwise.

If You Are Exposed

If a player's Guest tile becomes exposed, do the following:

  1. They flip their Identity card face-up.
  2. You get 1 Wallet from the Lost & Found.
  3. They place all of their Wallets from their Stash onto their Guest tile.
  4. They place half of their Wallets from their Guest (rounded down) into the Lost & Found.
  5. Now, whenever they Steal, they put the stolen Wallet on their Guest tile instead of in their Stash.

Reminders

  • When you place an Identity card in the discard pile, that Guest tile gets exposed.
  • Wallets that are given to Guests are put on the tile of that Guest.
  • Wallets that are given to or stolen by unexposed players are put on the table in front of that player in their Stash.
  • Wallets that are given to or stolen by exposed players are put on that player's Guest tile.
  • A Mark's item ability is immediately activated if and only if the Mark is targeted by a player taking the Steal action, not through Wallets being moved around by item abilities.

End of the Game

If at any point any of the following conditions are true, the game ends immediately:

  • Only one player is unexposed. That player wins.
  • A player has 7 Wallets when adding up those on their Identity card plus the Wallets on their Guest.

Note: To start a new game, you do not need to shuffle up the tiles. Just flip them back over to their unexposed side, replace wallets, and deal out new Marks and Identity Cards.

Official FAQ (Version 1.2)

Can I undo a player's last move? No. Either move of a player's Move action cannot be undone by a single player until that player takes another turn. For example, let's say Player A swaps the Magician and the Astronaut, then they swap the Nanny and Engineer as their move action. No other players can undo either of those swaps until Player A has taken another turn. However, they could move any of those tiles in different ways, such as swapping the Astronaut and the Lawyer. Note: It is possible for multiple players to work together to undo a move of another player. If players cannot remember whether a move is being undone, then the move in question is allowed.

What if I run out of Wallets? There are some item abilities that require a lot of Wallets be taken from the Lost & Found so it's possible for it to be empty when more Wallets are needed. Since Wallets are an unlimited resource, if this happens, just use something else to signify the additional wallets needed, such as pennies or paper clips.

Can I use the Snitch action if I am exposed? No. Only unexposed players can use the Snitch action. Note: There was a typo on the reference card in the first print run of the game that did not specify "unexposed."

Why do I have 2 of some of the same Character card? The Tools of the Trade promo pack adds Character cards with alternate item abilities. Make sure you replace any alternate Characters that you use. You should never have two of the same Character in the Identity deck.

Is there a penalty if I use the Expose action and I do not expose a player? There is no penalty if you use the Expose action and you guess a Guest that is NOT another player. The only penalty is that you were not very productive on your turn.

Can I steal from my own Guest? Yes. This moves the Wallet from the more vulnerable location on your Guest to the more protected location in your Stash.

Can I steal more than one Wallet from a Guest with the Steal action? No. Each time you use Steal, you can only steal a single wallet. You can steal more on future turns.

If a Mark has multiple Wallets and I steal just one of them, do I get to use the Item ability? Yes. You only need to steal a single wallet to trigger the ability.

  • iii. For a 5-6 player game, draw 4 random Identity cards and place them next to the playing area.
  • b. Add a Target token with the target side face-up on each Mark's Guest. These are easy marks; you want to steal from them so you can use their item.
  • REFERENCE: Give each player a Reference card.

  • START PLAYER: The player who was last stolen from goes first.
