Game Overview

Object of the game

Complete all of the different missions and campaigns, while fighting for your survival in an inhospitable world devastated by natural disasters.

The story varies, depending on the number of players. All players will share in the victory of each successfully completed mission. However, if you lose the mission by triggering its defeat conditions (if there are any), or if one of the heroes dies or if there is a plague of insects, all players will lose the game.

Each mission builds upon the previous mission of your campaign. This means you must successfully complete one mission before you can start on the next one. You may replay each mission as often as you need to, if you do not survive on your first attempt.

Upon completing the final mission of a campaign, you will uncover important fragments telling the history of the EXO universe.

Game Setup

Set up the game as follows:

  1. Choose your mission sheet: If this is your first game, you must start with the first mission of the campaign you want to play. Choose your campaign according to the number of players in your group. If you have already played one or more missions, continue with the one following your last successfully completed mission.

Each mission sheet contains the following information:

  • a. Modular gameboard setup. The game contains 4 board tiles, which must be placed as shown on the mission sheet. Take as many larva tokens as shown on the mission sheet and shuffle them. Then divide them face down into piles of nine, adding one alpha larva token face down to each heap. Shuffle each pile face down. Place one pile on each of the hives marked on the mission sheet. Then take one larva token from each pile and place it face down next to the hive.
  • b. Mission objective. Here you will find the requirements you need to fulfil to successfully complete your mission.
  • c. Character starting zones. All characters start the mission from a pre-assigned starting zone as shown on the mission sheet.
  • d. Disaster dice. At the bottom of each mission sheet you will find two tables. One of them determines the effect of the weather, and the other the behaviour of the fauna for each round.
  • e. Additional information. Some missions may require the use of additional components, such as: cards, tiles, tokens... Here, you may also find mission-specific rules. Follow them step by step.
  1. Choose your character: Each player chooses a character and takes the following components:
  • 1 player board the same colour as your hero's realm of origin.
  • Your hero, EXO-animal and drone cards. Place your cards on the corresponding spaces on your player board, your drone card with the "portable beacon" side facing up.
  • Your hero miniature, corresponding EXO-animal and drone token. Place your miniatures on their starting zone, as shown on your mission sheet. Place your drone token on the drone card on your player board.
  • 2 life tokens (red cubes), one each for your hero and your EXO-animal. Place them in the slots corresponding to the number shown on your cards.
  • In games with 1, 2 or 3 players: use 4 action pawns each in the colour matching your player boards. In 4-player games: use 3 action pawns each. Claire receives 1 additional action pawn.
  • 3 pink cubes (food), 1 brown cube (wood) and 1 black cube (metal). Place them in the backpack slots on your player board.
  • 5 extraction tiles in the colour matching your player board.

Player board legend: a. Hero card; b. EXO-animal card; c. Drone card; d. Drone token; e. Life tokens; f. Upgrade slot; g. Construction cost; h. Hero backpack; i. Drone backpack; j. EXO slot; k. Extraction tiles; l. Action pawns.

  1. Upgrades board: The upgrades board is placed next to the gameboard. Shuffle the upgrade tiles separately, face down for each of the colours and levels: level I, level II, and level III. Place one upgrade tile each on a slot corresponding to their level until the upgrades board is filled. Then turn them face up. You can buy these upgrades throughout the game. Return the remaining upgrade tiles to the box.

  2. Exploration deck: Shuffle the exploration cards, form a deck, and put them face down next to the gameboard.

  3. Artefacts deck: Shuffle the artefact cards, form a deck, and put them face down next to the gameboard. Reveal the top 4 cards and place them face up next to the artefacts deck.

  4. Bug decks: Separate the bug cards into heaps according to their type. Shuffle each heap and place them face down next to the board.

  5. Resource heap: Place all resource cubes, EXO gems, EXO tiles, larva tokens, die tokens, multipurpose tokens, shelter tokens, bug miniatures, and combat dice next to the gameboard, within easy reach of all players.

  6. Disaster dice: Place the weather die and the fauna die next to the mission sheet.

  7. Initial setup: Place each character into their respective starting zone. Then place 1 EXO tile matching the hero's colour into each of the starting zones, as well as 1 extraction tile and 1 resource of the player's choice. If several characters share the same starting zone, the players decide among themselves which EXO tile should be placed into their zone. The same applies to the production tile and resource of their choice.

Phases of the Game

EXO is divided into multiple rounds, each consisting of 4 different phases which proceed in order:

  1. Disaster phase
  2. Production phase
  3. Action phase
  4. Night phase

Each phase is explained in detail below:

1. Disaster Phase

  • a. Weather and fauna: At the beginning of each round, roll the weather and the fauna dice. Then compare the results with the tables on your mission sheet to determine which effects will be active during that round. Put the dice next to their respective table, with the rolled value facing up as a reminder during your round.
  • b. Adapt your EXO-animal: Having lived inside caves for centuries, EXO-animals are not used to the weather conditions on the outside, so they might struggle at times. At the beginning of each round, roll two combat dice. Each player then chooses one of the two dice to apply to their animal this round – all players may choose the same die or different dice, as they wish.

The adaptation result is read as follows:

  • Claw marks (no burst): Nothing happens.
  • Claw marks with a burst: Your EXO-animal is dealt 1 damage.
  • Shield: Your EXO-animal will not produce any EXO this round.

2. Production Phase

  • a. Producing EXO: Each player receives 1 EXO gem of their colour. Place it in the "EXO slot" on your player board, regardless of whether your hero and your EXO-animal are in the same zone of the board or not. To produce EXO, the EXO-animal must be alive and the player must not have chosen the shield result during the adaptation roll.
  • b. Producing resources: Each player receives one resource from each extraction tile of their colour on the board.

You only have a limited number of slots on your player board to store EXO and resources. Once all slots are filled, no more EXO is produced. Equally, you can only produce as many resources as you have slots in your backpack.

Note: If you do not have any open resource slots, you can still produce additional resources and choose to discard some of the resources already in your backpack instead. The same rule applies to EXO: you can produce new EXO and then choose to discard any of the gems already in your possession.

3. Action Phase

During this phase, you each place action pawns, for your character as well as your EXO-animal, on the different spaces of your player board, depending on the actions you want to perform. You can place as many action pawns on any of the different spaces as you like, with the exception of the REST space (which may only hold 1 pawn at any one time). These spaces are marked with the icon representing each action. Once all players have placed their action pawns, you decide in which order you want to perform your actions. To perform an action, remove the action pawn from the corresponding space on your player board. This phase ends when all players have spent all of their action pawns.

The action spaces are:

  • Hero: Build, Extract resources, Move drone
  • EXO-animal: Extract EXO
  • Hero/EXO-animal: Move and/or Attack, Upgrade, Rest

Note: It is important that you plan your actions as a group. Decide which actions you want to perform and in which order. This way you may, for example, build an extraction tile which another player can then use to extract a resource in the same round.

All of the different actions are described in detail below:

Move and/or attack

For each action pawn placed on the "move and/or attack" space of either your hero's or your EXO-animal's zone of the player board, you may:

  • Move your miniature. You can only move to a zone adjacent to the one you are currently in. You may move diagonally if both zones are connected.
  • Move your miniature and attack.
  • Attack with your miniature.

If you have placed an action pawn on the "move and/or attack" space for both your hero and your EXO-animal, you may move both miniatures at the same time to perform a joint attack. You may also move them independently of each other and into different zones.

If you move a miniature to a zone containing a larva token, flip the token to reveal the bug hiding underneath and replace it with the corresponding miniature.

Attack

Whenever your hero moves to an unexplored zone on the board, you must draw an exploration card. Trigger all its properties and resolve its effects.

Note: A zone is considered unexplored if it contains no EXO tiles or any resource tiles.

Properties and effects will be resolved in the following order:

  1. Place one cube of the resource that could be produced in this zone onto the board.
  2. Place an EXO tile of the colour that could be produced in this zone onto the board.
  3. Resolve all card effects.
  4. Choose one of the 4 artefact cards lying face up next to the board or draw one from the deck and equip it immediately. If you draw one of the 4 cards lying face up next to the board, replace it with a new card drawn from the artefacts deck.

You will find an overview of all of the exploration and artefact cards at the end of this manual, including a description of the different card symbols.

Note: Only heroes can explore new zones. If you move an EXO-animal on its own, you will still need to fight any bugs in the zone, but you may not draw an exploration card.

Equipment: Both your hero and your EXO-animal can each equip a maximum number of 3 artefact cards. If, at any point, drawing a card would lead to you exceeding your card limit, you must either discard a card you have already equipped or discard the new card you have just drawn. Place your hero's artefact cards to the left of your player board and those of your EXO-animal to the right.

Note: If all of your card spaces are already filled when you are about to explore a new zone, you may pass one of your artefact cards to another player who is in the same zone as you before making the move. This way you can free up space to equip a new card.

To attack, roll as many combat dice as your attack value (if this is a joint attack, use the sum of your hero's and your EXO-animal's attack values; if they attack on their own, use their individual attack values). If your attack value is higher than 6, take a die token and roll 6 dice; that is the maximum number of combat dice that can be rolled for any fight. Each die token can be discarded to change the value of one combat die to one of your choice. Each player can only have 1 die token at any one time.

Note: You can use a die token to change the result of any roll of the combat die. You may use it right after you receive it, but you may also keep it and use it to change the result of any other roll of the combat die later on, including during the disaster phase.

Joint attack

If two or more players place one of their action pawns on the "move and/or attack" action space and if they can attack the same target, they may decide to perform a joint attack.

All players roll their combat dice at the same time. This roll is also limited to 6 dice. Players add as many dice as they have attacks until they reach the 6-dice-limit. The first player to take their combat dice is also the one contributing the most dice to the combat. The second player to take their dice contributes the second most dice to the combat. Once the limit of six combat dice has been reached, any other player involved in the combat who would then contribute fewer combat dice to the attack than their actual combat value, receives 1 die token. Remember, that each player can only have 1 die token at any one time.

Note: Any player who participates in a combat but does not contribute any combat dice, also receives 1 die token. In addition, any player who has a die token and participates in combat (even if they do not contribute any dice) may use it. If you do not use your die token, you can keep it to use at a later time.

Combat damage caused by bugs will be distributed among all players participating in the combat as they see fit.

See combat system on page 3. (Printed cross-reference; the combat system section is printed below in this rulebook.)

Extracting resources

For each action pawn placed on "extract resources", your hero can extract 1 unit of the resource from the zone he is in. To do so there must be an extraction tile inside the zone containing a resource, that may be produced in this zone. Place all extracted resources into your backpack.

As EXO is a cooperative game, any hero may extract resources from any extraction tile built by any other hero.

Rest

For each action pawn placed on "rest", the resting character recovers 1 life point. You can only perform this action once per character and per round. Only one action pawn may be placed on each "rest" space.

Upgrades

For each action pawn placed on "upgrade", your hero can take 1 upgrade tile, paying its cost as shown on the upgrades board. Upgrade tiles can be equipped to a hero, EXO-animal or a drone, as shown on the tile.

You must first buy the level I upgrade tile of any colour. Once the level I slot is cleared, you can start buying level II upgrade tiles of the same colour. To unlock a level III upgrade tile, you must first clear the path by buying 1 level II upgrade tile from each row, i.e. one tile from the first row (2A, 2B), one tile from the second row (2C, 2D) and another tile from the third row (2E, 2F). Once the path is clear, you can buy the level III upgrade tile of this colour. Any player can buy any level II upgrade tile in any order to clear the path and unlock the level III upgrade tile.

Limit of equipped upgrades: Drones can only equip one upgrade tile, which is placed on the corresponding space on its card. Heroes and EXO-animals can equip three upgrade tiles each, which are placed on the corresponding spaces on your player board.

A detailed overview of all of the upgrade tile icons can be found at the end of this booklet.

Build

For each action pawn placed on "build", your hero can build 1 of the following structures, paying its construction cost as shown on your player board.

  • Level III – Portable beacon: Once built, turn over your drone card. From now on, your drone can assist you in your adventures.
  • Level II – Drone: The four different types of drone are described below:
    • Combat drone: Add 1 die to any combat roll. All players who are inside the same zone as the drone benefit from this effect.
    • Gatherer drone: Whenever your hero extracts any resources, this drone will also extract 1 resource, provided it is placed inside a zone that hosts an extraction tile. The extracted resources may be placed either in your backpack or on one of the drone's three carrying spaces.
    • Scout drone: Whenever any hero enters an unexplored zone with this drone already in it, draw an artefact card before drawing an exploration card.
    • Medic drone: Once per round, you can use the medic drone to recover 1 life point for any character inside the same zone as the drone. This action can be performed at any time. You do not need to spend any action pawns to do so.
  • Level I – Extraction tiles: To build an extraction tile your hero needs to be in a zone where food, wood or metal can be produced and that does not have another extraction tile already in place. To build, place one of your extraction tiles inside the zone as shown above and insert one resource cube.
  • Level I – Shelter: To build a shelter, you must pay the cost shown on your player board. Shelters can accommodate any number of heroes.

Drone movement

For each action pawn placed on "move drone", your hero can move their drone for up to 2 zones. Drones can carry up to 3 items. Drones might come in very handy if you need to transfer resources to other players quickly.

Extracting EXO

For each action pawn placed on "extract EXO", your EXO-animal may extract 1 EXO gem of the colour produced in the zone it is in. To do so, the zone must have previously been explored and your EXO-animal must have an available slot on your player board to accommodate the gem.

Free Actions

The following actions can be performed for free. You do not need to spend any action pawns on them:

  • Trade any resource or artefact card with any hero inside the same zone as you.
  • Load or unload any drone inside your zone.
  • Trigger the special abilities and powers of your heroes and EXO-animals as many times as you can pay their cost. (Exception: Claire can only use her special ability once per round.)

Note: You cannot exchange EXO with other players.

Combat System

The combat system in EXO: Mankind Reborn is based on rolling dice and drawing cards from different decks representing the bugs' abilities and intelligence.

Combat always develops as follows:

  1. Draw 1 card from the deck corresponding to the type of bug you are fighting against. Each bug card contains two different attack profiles: the upper part applies to common bugs and the lower part to alpha bugs.
  2. Perform an ATTACK. Depending on your roll, you will either cause damage to the bug or you will avoid damage inflicted by it. Combat dice faces read as follows:
    • Claw face: You cause 1 damage to the bug.
    • Claw-and-burst face: You cause 2 damage to the bug.
    • Shield face: Avoid 1 non-critical damage caused by the bug.
    • If the shield icon is displayed on the bug card, you will need to roll the claw-and-burst icon (as drawn in the printed footnote) to break through their defences before you can cause damage.
  3. All damage as well as negative effects caused by the bug is distributed among all players who have participated in the combat.
  4. Check if you have caused sufficient damage to the bug to kill it. If you do, remove its miniature from the board. You will also gain 1 food. This resource may be taken by any of the players who took part in the combat.
  5. Discard all bug cards used during combat. Shuffle them back into their respective decks at the start of the new day.

You need to defeat all bugs in one single attack. Otherwise they will use their regenerative powers to survive.

If you are fighting a bug in a zone that also contains a hive, you need to defeat the bug before you can cause damage to the hive. Once you have defeated the bug, you can assign any remaining damage from your attack roll to the hive.

A detailed overview of all of the bug attack icons can be found at the end of this booklet.

Combat example: Yuri, Nurasyl and Sharik use their Move and/or Attack action to enter a zone occupied by a larva token. As this zone has already been explored they do not need to explore again. They turn over the larva token and replace it with the corresponding miniature (an alpha scorpion). They then draw a card from the scorpion deck. Yuri, Nurasyl and Sharik together have 7 attack dice (Yuri has two, Nurasyl has two and Sharik has three). However, they may not exceed the maximum allowed number of 6 attack dice. So they throw 6 dice and take 1 die token which they decide to save for later. The alpha scorpion effect is applied, causing 1 critical damage to the heroes. This damage cannot be blocked by shields. The remaining damage is blocked by the shields. The players decide that Yuri will take the damage. With their dice, Yuri, Nurasyl and Sharik cause 6 damage points, 4 critical damage and 2 normal damage. This is enough to kill the scorpion. They take the miniature off the board and receive 1 food which they give to Yuri.

Destroying the Hives

There are two different types of hives in the game: the ones shown on your mission sheet and the ones you encounter when drawing an exploration card.

The hives revealed by exploration cards always have 6 life points, whereas the hives shown on your mission sheet are special and need to be destroyed by causing damage in a very specific manner. This damage is cumulative and is always caused as follows:

Every time you cause damage to a hive, mark the affected zone with a multipurpose cube, so you can see what you still need to do to destroy it.

Destroying a hive does not produce any meat as, technically speaking, you have not killed any bugs. All you did was collapse the entrance to their burrow.

4. Night Phase

Once all players have used up all of their actions for this turn, night falls and the night phase starts. This phase includes the following events which proceed in order:

Animal Instinct

If two EXO-animals find themselves alone in the same zone without any hero, their animal instinct takes over and they fight. At nightfall, each EXO-animal rolls their combat dice. The one who loses the combat will lose 1 life, regardless of the amount of damage caused. In case of a draw, both EXO-animals lose 1 life each. If, after the dice are rolled, neither EXO-animal receives damage, no lives are lost.

Proliferate Larvae

This concludes the night phase.

Bugs in and outside their hives are most active at night. They behave as follows:

  • Each hive on the board spawns one larva token. This token is taken from the top of the heap placed on top of each hive. Place it face down next to its hive.
  • If there are already 3 larva tokens (or bugs) surrounding a hive, 1 new larva token is placed, and the 3 existing larvae proliferate. Move each of these 3 larva tokens (or bugs) to a different zone of the board adjacent to the hive. If a larva token is moved to a zone already containing a hero and/or EXO-animal miniature in this way, flip it over and replace it with the corresponding bug miniature.

Shuffle all bug cards discarded during combat back into their respective decks. Then you start the new day.

If there are 3 or more larva tokens or bugs in any zone of the board not containing a hive during this phase, the heroes are overwhelmed by a plague of insects and you lose the game.

A plague is also produced any time you need to place a new larva token but cannot do so because the pile on top of the hive has been depleted. In this event, you also lose the game.

Nighttime Attacks

If a larva token is placed inside the same zone as a hero/EXO-animal at night, or if there already is a bug inside this zone, a night-time attack occurs.

Only EXO-animals can fight bugs at night. If there is an EXO-animal (alone or in the company of their hero) inside the zone, the player controlling the EXO-animal rolls the combat dice to resolve the fight. If a larva token or a bug is inside or enters the same zone as a hero, the player controlling that character draws a bug card and applies its effects immediately.

If a larva token or a bug enters a zone containing a structure or a drone but no EXO-animal or hero, the larva token or the bug will attack and destroy the structure as well as the drone.

Survival

As night falls, the weather also changes, making survival on the outside extremely difficult. You must eat and recover your strength to ensure your survival. If you do not, you will suffer the consequences.

  • Every hero must consume 1 food. If you do not, you will lose 1 life point.
  • If your EXO-animal is in the same zone as your hero, you need to spend 1 additional food to feed your EXO-animal. If you do not, it will also lose 1 life point. If your EXO-animal is in a different zone, consider it fed.
  • Every hero that spends the night outside a shelter will also lose 1 life point.

Note: A good way to preserve food without losing lives is to separate from your EXO-animal before nightfall. But remember, if two EXO-animals find themselves alone in the same zone without any hero they will fight each other.

Characters

Each hero has a number of attributes and abilities as described on their cards: life points, number of attack dice, and special abilities. You can use your hero's or your EXO-animal's special ability as often as you want to, provided you can pay their cost. You can equip a maximum of 3 upgrades for your hero and your EXO-animal each. These are placed on their respective areas on your player board.
