Game Setup
- Players choose to become representatives of the Light Areas (White Color) or Dark Areas (Black Color). Randomly decide one player to become the starting player.
- Or you may put the 2 Small Map Overlays into the Draw Bag, and draw 1 to determine which color will become the starting player.
- Randomly place 4 Large Map Overlays inside the Island Board as shown in a 7 by 7 grid.
- Each overlay has a different distribution of Light and Dark areas and can also be flipped over to provide even more variations.
- Place the Small Map Overlay of the second player's color in the center of the Island Board. If the White player is the starting player, place the Black overlay in the center.
- Put all 49 Tribe Stones in the Draw Bag and shake it thoroughly. Each player draws 3 Stones from the bag and places them in front of themselves.
- Place the 7 Advantage Tokens nearby the Island Board for later use.
You can now start playing!
How to Play
Beginning from the starting player, players will take alternating turns until the game ends. Perform the following 3 steps on your turn:
-
In any order of your choice, place the 3 stones in front of you on an empty area on the island. The placement of stones needs to follow these rules:
- If this is the first stone of this color to be placed on the island, it can be placed on any empty area excluding the 4 corners.
- If this is not the first stone of this color to be placed on the island, then it must be placed on an empty area that is orthogonally adjacent to existing stones of the same color.
- If this color has no empty areas that are orthogonally adjacent to existing stones of the same color, then it is stacked on top of any stone of the same color.
- Both players may place stones on any area regardless of Light or Dark.
-
After placing the stones, check if any of the 7 tribes have at least 4 stones in the same colored area. When this happens, the player of the corresponding area color takes the Advantage Token belonging to that tribe. This tribe is now under the control of this player.
- Multiple stones of the same color stacked in the same area will count toward this limit.
-
Draw 3 stones from the bag and place them in front of you, then the next player takes a turn.
- If there are fewer than 3 stones in the bag, draw as many as you can. Thus the player taking the last turn of the game may place fewer than 3 stones.
Game End
The player that obtains 4 Advantage Tokens wins, and the game will end immediately.
The forces of Light & Dark have collided and a victor was decided – for now. They shall meet again to continue their eternal struggle in another cycle.
Game Variants
A. Multiple Sets
This variant cannot be used with B. Public Ring.
- In step 4 of Game Setup, instead of drawing 3 stones for each player, draw 3 sets of 3 stones and place them next to the island.
- During the game, the players will not draw stones for themselves when using this variant rule.
- On your turn, instead of placing the stones in front of you, choose one of the 3 sets next to the island, and place the 3 stones on the board.
- Stone placement should follow the normal rules on page 6.
- After you place stones, draw a set of 3 stones from the bag and place them next to the island. Then the next player takes a turn.
- If there are fewer than 3 stones in the bag, draw as many as you can for a set. On the last 3 turns of the game, 1 set may have fewer than 3 stones for placement when chosen.
B. Public Ring
This variant cannot be used with A. Multiple Sets.
- In step 4 of Game Setup, after shuffling the stones in the draw bag, randomly place all 49 stones in a C shape ring surrounding the island.
- During the game, the players will not draw stones for the board nor themselves when using this variant rule.
- On your turn, instead of placing the stones in front of you, choose 3 consecutive stones from either end of the ring, and place them on the board. Then the next player takes a turn.
- Stone placement should follow the normal rules on page 6.
C. Rush Action
This variant can be used along with the other variants.
- During Game Setup, both players will additionally receive 2 Rush Tokens belonging to their color.
- At the start of your turn, you may declare to use a Rush Token. If you do, discard a Rush Token and return it to the box. You will draw an extra stone from the bag for placement on this turn:
- Using the Rush Action will let players place 4 stones on a single turn.
- You may only use one Rush Action per turn.
- When using this variant, players may get to place 1-4 stones on the last turn of the game, depending on the usage of Rush Tokens.
- When used along with A. Multiple Sets, you will choose a set first, then draw an extra stone from the bag.
- When used along with B. Public Ring, you do not get to draw extra stones; instead you will choose one end of the ring to take 4 stones for placement.
