Important Information
Read these rules carefully, even if you already know the base game ESCAPE ROOM DAS SPIEL! If you do not do this thoroughly, it may be impossible to escape!
IMPORTANT: READ, LOOK CAREFULLY AND COMMUNICATE!
2. Web App and Website
During the game, the digital Chrono Decoder is your game master. To start the digital Chrono Decoder and the thematic background music for the respective adventure on your smartphone, go to the web app app.escaperoomthegame.com. Via the web app you also reach the website www.escaperoomthegame.com, where you will find introductory texts for the adventures, solutions, downloads for the consumed materials, and FAQs.
If you own one of the base games, you can use the Chrono Decoder from it instead of the digital one.
3. Game Setup
Choose the adventure you want to play. We recommend starting with the 15-minute introductory adventure BLOODY MARY, and then playing THE LITTLE GIRL and HOUSE BY THE LAKE (in that order).
Printed-text discrepancy (flagged, not corrected): the German text above names BLOODY MARY, THE LITTLE GIRL and HOUSE BY THE LAKE. None of these is one of the three adventures in this set (Kidnapped, Prison Island, Asylum). The adventure illustration on the second page of this rulebook labels Kidnapped as the 15-minute tutorial ("Tutorial 15 Minuten"), and the note in section 5 describes Kidnapped as a single part. The text is transcribed as printed; the recommended order is not corrected. Players should check the recommended order against the box and the official website (www.escaperoomthegame.com) before relying on it.
Take the adventure and carefully open the band. On the back of the band are the hints for this adventure. Set the band aside for now, as you may need it later. Do not open the game board yet. Place it on the table with the picture facing up. Have the hint decoder ready, as well as a pencil and notepaper.
CHRONO DECODER
Do you want to play with the Chrono Decoder from the base game? Then insert three new 1.5 V R6 batteries into the Chrono Decoder and place the 16 keys next to it.
Do you want to play with the digital Chrono Decoder? Then open the site app.escaperoomthegame.com on your smartphone, and select the adventure and the digital Chrono Decoder. Do not forget to turn up the volume before you begin the adventure! Start the timer only when you are instructed to.
4. Game Objective
Each adventure consists of three parts. To complete a part, you must find a code consisting of four keys and enter it into the Chrono Decoder. If you enter all three codes correctly, with the help of the keys, within 60 minutes, you win the game!
5. Sequence of Play
Once you have completed the game setup and read these instructions in full, you can start.
Take the game board and read the introductory text on the back aloud, at your leisure. Then fold the game board open once to the left and right, so that you can see Part 1. Read the description, including the contents, aloud, and check whether all the contents listed there are present.
Then press the START button on the (digital) Chrono Decoder. The time now starts counting down. You have only one hour, the adventure has begun!
Look at all the contents closely (do not forget the back sides!). Search for information, codes, puzzles and other mysterious symbols, and work together to understand the logic behind the tasks.
As soon as you have found the first of the three codes, you must insert the four correct keys into the (digital) Chrono Decoder (see "6. Keys").
If the code is correct, you hear a fanfare and may go on to the second part of the adventure. To do so, fold the game board open exactly once at the top and at the bottom, so that Part 2 becomes visible. Now search again for a code for this part.
Once you have entered the second code correctly, you come to Part 3. You may unfold the game board completely and look at both its front and its back.
As soon as you have entered the third code correctly, the victory music sounds and the countdown stops. You have successfully completed the adventure!
Should you not be able to complete the adventure within one hour, the (digital) Chrono Decoder will count up. Of course, you can still keep trying to solve the puzzles!
Note (printed in the rulebook): The adventure KIDNAPPED consists of only one part. Once you have had the text read aloud and have started the app or the Chrono Decoder, you may unfold the game board to the left and right. There you will see the prologue. You may fold the game board open again and turn it over at any time to see Part 1, and of course you may turn the game board back over to look at the prologue.
Components marked with a printer symbol may be written on, folded, torn ... Do with them whatever you like! After the adventure, you can download these from the homepage www.escaperoomthegame.com and print them out.
6. Keys
For the (digital) Chrono Decoder there are six different keys. For each of the four positions of the code, you must choose a key and insert it into the matching slot in the (digital) Chrono Decoder. You may choose a key more than once!
Each key has several details that may be important. Look at the keys carefully before you start the adventure.
The key illustration labels the following features of a key: Roman numeral, dot, arrow, number, shape, letter, zigzag edge and key bit (Schlüsselbart).
Example: If you believe that the code is 3, D, square, zigzag, insert the following four keys into the Chrono Decoder in this order: the key showing the number 3, the key showing the letter D, the key with the square shape, and the key with the zigzag edge. The illustration circles these four features, one per key, in that order.
7. Hints
On the back of the band you will find hints for the respective adventure. You can read the hints with the help of the hint decoder. At regular intervals, the app or the Chrono Decoder will tell you with an acoustic signal that you may read the next hint.
Always read only the standard hint first. If it does not help you, you may also read the extra hint, which gives you more precise information. Should you be completely stuck on a part, you may look at the solution to that part as well.
Read the hints carefully! They can be very helpful!
The hint decoder has the following fields. The illustration labels them as: 1. Number, 2. Part, 3. Time, 4. Solutions.
- Number: Read the hints in this order!
- Part 1, 2 or 3: Read this hint only if you are currently in this part of the adventure!
- Time: Read this hint only once the time shown has already been passed!
- Solutions: The solutions are pictured here. Look at them only if you cannot get any further at all!
The illustration of the hint decoder shows the printed heading "HINWEISE" ("HINTS"), the caption "Ihr kommt nicht weiter? Schaut euch diese Hinweise an:" ("Stuck? Look at these hints:"), and example hint fields "Hinweis 2 / Teil 1 / 50:00", "Hinweis 3 / Teil 2 / 45:00", "Hinweis 4 / Teil 2 / 40:00" and "Hinweis 5 / Teil 2 / 30:00". The red center panel carries the caption "Das ist nur ein Beispiel für einen Hinweis!" ("This is only an example of a hint!"). The solution panel is headed "ACHTUNG! HIER SIND DIE LÖSUNGEN!" ("ATTENTION! THE SOLUTIONS ARE HERE!") and has the fields "Lösung Teil 1", "Lösung Teil 2" and "Lösung Teil 3".
8. Ending the Game
If you have entered the three correct codes into the Chrono Decoder within the 60 minutes, you will hear a fanfare. You have mastered the adventure! Take a photo of yourselves and share it on social networks!
If not all three codes were entered within 60 minutes, the device will inform you of your defeat. The Chrono Decoder will then count up, and you can keep trying to enter the correct codes.
If you were not successful, or if you want to look at the exact solution path once more, you will find all solutions and hints on the internet at www.escaperoomthegame.com. Of course, another group can also play this adventure. To do so, simply download the components marked with the printer symbol from the website and print them out. Make sure you pack all the contents back into the matching parts.
Once you have played all three adventures, many more adventures with further exciting puzzles await you!
9. Important Tips
- Tip 1: Communicate the whole time, do not keep any information to yourselves, every second is important!
- Tip 2: You do not have to break or tear anything, but you may write on some parts or fold them. You will recognize these parts by the printer symbol.
- Tip 3: Make as many notes as possible; perhaps this will help you recognise connections!
- Tip 4: No prior knowledge is required. Anyone can solve the puzzles!
- Tip 5: Of course, you may also use items such as flashlights or calculators.
- Tip 6: Read the rules aloud and carefully before the game, and keep them at hand during the game in case questions come up.
- Tip 7: At certain points you may become frustrated, but that is part of an escape room! If you get stuck, go through all the hints carefully once more and consider whether at some point you drew an illogical conclusion. Look at all the components closely (front and back!) and compare your notes. Never give up! All the answers are right in front of your eyes!
IMPORTANT: READ, LOOK CAREFULLY & COMMUNICATE!
