IMPORTANT: READ, LOOK & COMMUNICATE!

Preparation

Place 3× AA batteries (not included) in the Chrono Decoder and collect all the keys. Find the envelopes and the hint cards that correspond to the adventure you are going to play. Always play level 0 first, then adventure 1 and then 2 due to the increasing difficulty level. Make sure everyone has pen and paper ready. Make sure you have good lighting and sit together so everyone has a good view of everything. Carefully examine the details on the keys and the ciphers on the Chrono Decoder before you start.

Aim of the Game

Each adventure has three envelopes (levels). In each level, you must find a code consisting of four keys that you enter into the Chrono Decoder. Find three correct codes within 60 minutes to win the game.

The Game

Never open an envelope or sealed item unless you are specifically requested to do so.

Take the first envelope of the adventure that you have chosen and calmly read the introduction letter on the back of the envelope out loud. Check if the contents of the envelope match the description under the back flap. Is it complete? Carefully remove all items from the frame. Then switch on the Chrono Decoder and press the START button. If you want to play the extra ambient sounds using the app, press the play button in the app at the same time you press the start button. The clock will start counting down exactly 60 minutes and the game has begun!

To play the introduction game (Level 0), please use the Escape Room App for the 15 minute timer.

All the players proceed to check the fronts and backs of all the provided materials very carefully. Search for clues, codes, riddles and (parts of) puzzles, and work as a team. Once you find the first of the three codes, take the four matching keys and enter these into the Chrono Decoder. If the code is correct, you hear a 'confirmation' sound. You can open the next envelope of the adventure and proceed to decipher the second code. After the third correct code has been entered, you will hear victory music and the countdown will stop.

Keys

The game includes eight keys. These eight keys have six different key sides, each stating different information corresponding with the codes you will find during the game. The other keys are exact copies. If you look closely, you will see that two keys (with the circle and the square) have exactly the same front and back. The other two keys have a different front and back. Examine the keys carefully before starting the game!

The key sides show: Roman Numeral, Dot, Arrow, Digit, Shape, Letter, Zigzag Edge, Bottom Shape.

Hint Cards

Each adventure contains eight numbered hint cards. You will occasionally hear a 'roar' sound to indicate that you are allowed to draw a hint card. You can opt not to read it (yet), but this is challenging. To read the hint card, slide it into the Hint Decoder and read out loud. Always read hint cards carefully and completely. If you do not need the hint, this means you are on the right track and on schedule.

The hint card shows three pieces of information:

  1. Number: this is the order in which you have to draw the hint cards.
  2. Level: the hint concerns that part of the adventure.
  3. Time: never read a hint card before the time shown on the card has passed.

Chrono Decoder

During the game, you will occasionally come across the text or logo 'ER'. This is important information as it tells you that you must convert something using one of the decoder systems on the two sides of the Chrono Decoder. Never use the Chrono Decoder unless you get the text or ER logo. Each adventure requires only one cipher type.

The decoder systems printed on the Chrono Decoder are:

  • Cipher Disc Digits
  • Cipher Disc Alphabet
  • Rosicrucians Secret Code
  • Polybius Square (M = 32)
  • Morse

Entering a Code

Once you discover a code, place the four keys from left to right into the Chrono Decoder. If the entered code is incorrect, you'll hear an 'error' sound and one minute will be deducted from the remaining time. Try to find the right code again. You cannot continue until this code has been cracked. If the code is correct, you'll hear a 'confirmation' sound and the clock will continue.

Any questions? Check the FAQ on the website.

Winning

If you have entered three correct codes into the Chrono Decoder within 60 minutes, you'll hear 'victory' music and you'll have won the game. You can take a picture of the group showing the time on the display and share this on social media using the app. If you were unsuccessful in finding all correct codes within 60 minutes you will hear the 'defeat' sound and the time will start counting up. You can still proceed to find the code(s). The decoder will work the same way it did before, but without the final 'victory' music. Don't forget to switch off the Chrono Decoder when you've finished.

If you were unsuccessful or are curious about which clues you missed, then have a look at the walkthrough on WWW.ESCAPEROOMTHEGAME.COM. If other people want to play the game too, you can print all the 'used' parts with a print icon on them and replace them in the correct envelope of the adventure.

Important Tips If You're Stuck in the Game

You will become frustrated, but that is part of experiencing an Escape Room. Go through all of the steps together again to see if you can discover any flaws in your logic. Keep the following tips close at hand and read out loud again when you are stuck:

COMMUNICATE! Stay positive and listen to each other. Share all information. Think aloud. Take notes. Double-check each other. Summarize together. Again … and again.

READ! All information in the game is important. There are no clues in the envelope text but the text is important to get an overview. Read roadmaps and hint cards carefully and completely. Read everything again … and again.

LOOK! Nothing left in the envelope? Study all materials again, front and back. Compare all your notes. Check the details on the keys again. Are the keys in the correct order in the Chrono Decoder? And with the correct side facing forward?

SAVE TIME! Read the rules out loud before playing. Use helpful devices on your smartphone like the flashlight, calculator, etc. You don't need to use foreknowledge because all info can be found in the game. Divide tasks. Don't break anything unless you find a print symbol on it. Use the ciphers on the Chrono Decoder only when indicated by 'ER'.

BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, NEVER GIVE UP! THE ANSWERS ARE LITERALLY IN FRONT OF YOU!
