How does the revised Haunter of the Dark mystery work for investigators in Arkham?

Per the FAQ errata, an investigator on Arkham chooses an encounter as if the Haunter of the Dark were not on his space, unless he has the Shining Trapezohedron. Whether damaging the monster still requires the artifact stayed disputed.
