How do I close a Gate, and what happens if I fail?
The rulebook states this directly, and forum replies agree.

A Gate closes when an Other World card you resolve says to close it, usually on a pass. Each attempt draws a fresh Other World card, which is discarded afterwards, pass or fail. On a fail the Gate stays open and you resolve the card's fail effect. Only text that names closing a Gate counts.
