Does closing a Gate remove the Monsters on its space?
The rulebook does not say this explicitly; several forum players agree that Monsters and Gates are independent.

No. Monsters and Gates are independent; Monsters stay where they are unless defeated. You must be free of Monsters on the space before you can take the Gate encounter, so you generally defeat them first.
