The Game
THE OBJECTIVE OF THE GAME IS TO OBTAIN FOUR "EL ERUDITO" COINS.
"El Erudito" is a general-knowledge board game. Players must correctly answer the prompts and questions, betting on their knowledge to win the money to buy the coins.
We recommend playing in teams. You can play with up to 4 teams with as many members as you like. You can also play individually, with 2 to 4 players, with the same rules and dynamics (as if each team had only 1 member).
Play time: 60 min. Ages 15+.
Setup
Place the game board in the center of the table, one pawn per team on the start space, and give $2000 to each team. The team of the person who proposed playing begins the turn.

Game Play
Each turn of the game consists of:
- ROLL THE DICE AND MOVE THE PAWN
- CHOOSE A RIVAL AND THE AMOUNT OF THE BET
- QUESTION
If the team answered incorrectly, the turn passes to the team on the left. If it answered correctly, it plays another turn. It may play up to three turns in a row. After that, even if it answered correctly, the turn passes to the team on its left.
1. Roll the Dice and Move the Pawn
Two dice are used. The pawn moves around the board following the direction indicated by the arrow on the "Start" space.
2. Choose a Rival and the Amount of the Bet
Before drawing the question, the team must decide on the rival and the amount of its bet, which cannot exceed the number indicated on the space. Both teams, challenger and rival, put the money determined by the challenger on the board, forming a common pot. In the case of a yellow "Aproximación" (Approximation) space, all teams must put the amount at stake into the pot.
3. Question
A rival draws a card of the corresponding category and reads it aloud. If the team answers correctly, it takes the money in the common pot and rolls the dice again to continue its turn. If it answers incorrectly, the rival team takes the money in the common pot and the round continues to the left. In the case of an Approximation question, all teams take part in the question. The pot goes to whoever answered the figure closest to the answer, and the round continues normally to the left.
Game Elements
Board
The board has four types of spaces:
-
Basic spaces: There are four colors of spaces representing the four question categories of the game (sequence, approximation, association, in common). The number on each space is the maximum value a team can bet on that question.
-
Luck space: If the space has an S, the team must take a luck card before drawing a question card.
-
"El Erudito" space: If the space has a letter E, it is a purchase space. The team may buy one "El Erudito" coin for $1000 before or after answering the question, but only once. The player does not need to answer the question correctly to be able to buy a coin. And it can only do so on this turn. That is, if it answers incorrectly, the next turn it begins on this same space before rolling the dice. At that moment it cannot buy a coin.
-
Start space: When a team passes through the start space it collects $500 from each of its rivals and receives an "El Erudito" coin from the game. When a player lands on the "Start" space it may choose the category to answer and bet up to $500. In addition, it is already authorized to collect the $500 from its rivals and the "El Erudito" coin.
-
Passages: The board has three passages that alter the normal course of the game. The passages can benefit the team or harm it. If a team lands on a space where a passage begins and answers the question correctly, it may use it to advance to the other end and shorten its path. Once on the final space of the passage, it rolls the dice and continues its turn normally. If a question is answered incorrectly on a space where a passage ends, the participant must go back to the space where it begins.
"El Erudito" Coins
The objective of the game is to obtain 4 "El Erudito" coins. They can be acquired in the following ways:
-
Purchase space: Buy a coin for $1000 each time you land on a space marked with the letter "E".
-
Start space: Each time a player passes through the start space it receives an "El Erudito" coin.
-
Luck cards: Luck cards can grant a free coin.
THE INSTANT A TEAM OBTAINS ITS FOURTH COIN, IT WINS THE GAME!
Luck Cards
When a team lands on a space with the letter "S" it must take a luck card before answering the question corresponding to its turn. It may use this card whenever it wants: in this same turn, or keep it to use at another time.
Question Cards
There are four categories of prompts:
-
Sequence: The cards of this category contain five elements that the team must put in order according to the indicated criterion.
Example: "Order the actors who played Batman chronologically: A. Christian Bale, B. Michael Keaton, C. George Clooney, D. Ben Affleck, E. Adam West." Answer: E. Adam West, B. Michael Keaton, C. George Clooney, A. Christian Bale, D. Ben Affleck.
-
Association: Contain two columns of five elements each. The team must pair an element of the first column with one of the second column according to the association criterion indicated on the card. Each element has only one association with the second column.
Example: "Associate drink with ingredient: 1. Bloody Mary, 2. Dry Martini, 3. Cuba Libre, 4. Margarita, 5. Old Fashioned; A. Tequila, B. Rum, C. Gin, D. Vodka, E. Whiskey." Answer: 1-D (Vodka), 2-C (Gin), 3-B (Rum), 4-A (Tequila), 5-E (Whiskey).
-
In Common: The cards of this category contain five elements. The team must find the characteristic common to all of them.
Example: "What do they have in common? Ocarina, Oboe, Helicon, Euphonium, Organ." Answer: They are wind musical instruments.
Clarification: The team may answer incompletely, for example by saying "they are instruments". In this case the rival must tell it "incomplete" and ask for more specificity, and the team must complete its answer for it to be considered correct.
-
Approximation: A question is read and all teams must write the answer on a piece of paper. Once everyone has answered, the answers are read out and whoever has the answer closest to the correct one takes the common pot.
Example: "How much does the FIFA World Cup trophy weigh?" Answer: 6.17 kilos.
Clarification: If two or more participants give exactly the same answer, the money in the betting pot is divided in equal parts.
Family Version
On each question, both teams, the challenger and the challenged, answer the question on paper. When they have written their final answer, they announce it to the rival team so that there is a record of who answered faster. Whoever has more correct answers ("Association" and "Sequence") or has answered correctly in less time ("In Common") is the winner and takes the bet money. If there is a tie, whoever answered faster wins. The "Approximation" category is played the same as in the classic game: everyone answers and whoever is closest to the correct answer wins.
If the winner of the question is the challenger, the turn continues normally: it rolls the dice and moves on the board. If instead the challenged team wins, the challenger's turn ends and play continues to the next player.
In this version, it is not necessary to have all the answers correct to keep playing; having a few more than the rival is enough.
Clarifications
-
What happens if there is a tie in the "Approximation" category? And what if the money cannot be divided exactly equally? The pot money is divided among those who tied. If the team that landed on the approximation space is among those who tied, it continues its turn (as long as it does not exceed the maximum of three questions per turn). If, when dividing the money, there is an indivisible remainder, it stays on the board and the next team that wins a question of this category takes it.
-
If I ended my turn on a space with an "E", can I buy the coin when the next turn begins? No. On purchase spaces coins can only be bought when the pawn arrives, whether by the dice or by luck card movements. It can be done before or after answering the question (correctly or incorrectly), but only once.
-
What happens if I run out of money? If a player runs out of money, it may sell a coin to the bank for $1000. If it has no coins and no money, it has lost the game.
