Components
The game box contains: a game board, 6 game pieces, 36 Estonia cards (6 different colours), 400 question cards and a die.
Game Goal
In Eesti MÄLUMÄNG the goal is to answer questions from six different categories. Players move along the track on the game board and always answer a question from the category of the space their piece is currently on.
The goal is to collect six Estonia cards of different colours, i.e. one card for each category, by answering the questions on the cards correctly. Then the player must reach the finish square in the middle of the game board. Answering the final question there correctly makes that player the winner.
Question Cards
Questions are divided into six categories: HISTORY, CULTURE, NATURAL SCIENCE, GEOGRAPHY, SPORT AND VARIA. Each card has one question from each category. The circles in front of the questions match the colours of the circles on the game board and indicate the category of the question. The correct answer is printed on the reverse side of the card.
Translator's note: the source lists the categories under five printed headings (the last one reads "SPORT JA VARIA", i.e. "SPORT AND VARIA") while the text states there are six categories. The headings are transcribed as printed.
Before playing, the players should agree how exactly questions must be answered. For example: whether a surname alone is enough for a name, how exactly dates and distances or other measurements must be given, etc.
Setup
Shuffle the question cards and place them in four piles beside the game board, question side up.
Each player chooses a game piece and places it on a free Estonia space in one of the corners of the game board. More than one player may start from the same space. Then the die is rolled, and the player who rolls the highest number starts. Turn order goes clockwise.
Playing a Turn
On your turn, roll the die and move your game piece along the game board as many steps as the die shows. You decide which direction to move in. The circle you stop on shows the category from which the question will be asked. If you are on the Estonia space, you may choose the category yourself.
The player to your left takes the top card from a pile and asks you the question from that card.
- If you answer incorrectly or do not know the answer, your turn ends and passes to the next player.
- If you answer correctly, take the Estonia card of the same colour as the question's category and place it in front of you. Your turn then passes to the next player.
- If you answer correctly a question from a category for which you already have the Estonia card of that colour, you may roll the die again. This means a player may have only one Estonia card of each colour.
The Finish Square
Once you have collected all six Estonia cards of different colours, head for the Estonia space. You do not need an exact number of steps to get there.
After reaching the Estonia space, you may begin moving toward the finish square on your next turn. The path to the finish square consists of two question circles. To move along it you no longer need the die. Instead, moving forward requires a correct answer to the question of the category shown.
- If you answer correctly, you may move your game piece to the next circle and answer the question there on your next turn.
- If you answer incorrectly or do not know the answer, your game piece stays where it is, and on your next turn you get another chance to answer a question from the same category.
Winning the Game
By answering both questions correctly you earn the right to move to the finish square. On your next turn, you must answer a question whose category is chosen by the player to your left. The category is chosen before the question is looked at.
- If you answer correctly, you are the winner.
- If you answer incorrectly, your game piece stays where it is, and on your next turn the player to your left again chooses the category of the question.
Possible Variants
- Play using only the outer game track on the board, and receive an Estonia card for each correct answer. The game ends when all cards have been collected, and the winner is the player who has collected the most cards.
- Play using only the question cards. After each correct answer, the player keeps that card. When a previously agreed game time has run out, the winner is the player with the most question cards.
- You may also play so that on the game board players may move only clockwise.
- Eesti mälumäng may also be played in teams. Before starting, decide whether each time a different team member answers, or whether team members may consult each other and give a shared answer.
