How many Alliances can I be in, and when are Alliances used?

You can be part of only one Alliance at a time, but if you leave one you may join a different one. In a five-player game only two players may be in the same Alliance, and Alliances are not used in three-player games. Players add that forming one requires existing diplomatic relations and adjacent Influence Discs; ships are not required.
