Can I keep an Ancient ship part aside when I can't place it?
The rulebook allows keeping the part next to your board; the publisher confirmed it counts toward the Upgrade limit.

Yes. You may hold an Ancient Ship Part beside your board and fit it with a later Upgrade. Placing it uses one of that action's slots.
