- 6 chapter marker tiles
- 18 item cards
Game Setup
- First, download the free Ravensburger® echoes app for your smartphone or tablet. You will need the app to play the game.
- Take all game materials from the box.
- Lay out the 6 chapter marker tiles (glowing border) in front of you.
- Choose a difficulty level and lay out the item cards accordingly:
Difficulty: Professional Investigator
Lay out all 18 item cards (black border) face up in front of you.
Difficulty: Amateur Detective
Turn the 18 item cards (black border) face down and find the cards marked with a diamond symbol. Set these 9 marked cards aside, face down. At first, play only with the 9 unmarked cards, which you lay out face up in front of you. You can already solve parts of the story with these. Only once you've done that do you take the cards you set aside (marked with the diamond symbol) to solve the rest.
- Launch the app and select Die Violine. As soon as you tap "Start Game," the prologue begins and you're immersed in the story.
Playing the Game
Your task is to work together to put the 24 parts of the story in the correct order. Each part is represented by an item (tile or card) and its associated echo. Using the conversations and sounds in the echo, you try to figure out how the individual parts fit together. The images sometimes give you clues too – so don't overlook any details.
Using the app, you can scan the cards and tiles to hear the sounds linked to them. Does your device not support image recognition, or is an item not recognized? Then you can enter the codes on the back into the app.
Use the Listen mode in the app to play the sounds.
1. Listen
Both the 18 item cards and the 6 chapter marker tiles each have their own echo. Together these make up the 24 parts of the story. Use your camera to scan any item to listen to its echo.
Hints:
- You may listen to all echoes as often as you like and repeat them.
- The story may jump around in time, so the echoes don't always flow smoothly into one another.
Do you want to listen to the story's prologue again? While in Listen mode, enter the following code into the app: PRL
Did you find some items while listening whose echoes you think belong together? Then at any time you can use the app to try to solve parts of the story.
2. Solve
The story is divided into 6 chapters. Each chapter begins with a chapter marker, one of the 6 chapter marker tiles. This is always followed by 3 item cards. When solving, you are always checking the order of the items belonging to one chapter.
Switch the app to Solve mode. Then scan a tile first, followed by 3 cards in the order you believe they belong in that tile's chapter. The app will then tell you whether you've solved the sequence of these cards correctly.
Guessed wrong?
Then you'll get one of the following clues from the app:
| Clue | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 0 | None of the 3 cards you scanned belong in this chapter. Maybe they fit together in a different one? |
| 1 | Only 1 of the 3 scanned cards belongs in this chapter. Whether it's already in the correct position remains uncertain. |
| 2 | Exactly 2 of the 3 cards belong in this chapter. The positions of the cards are still uncertain. |
| 3 | All 3 scanned cards belong in this chapter. However, the order of the cards is not yet correct. |
If you set the difficulty in the app to "Easy" or tap "Hint," you'll get extra help. The colors and symbols will then show you which cards don't belong in the chapter (red X), which are still in the wrong position (blue arrow), or which are already correct (green check mark).
Guessed right?
Then you can immediately listen to the whole chapter again in one go. It's worth it, since you'll hear new, additional clues.
To listen to a solved chapter again later, scan the corresponding tile in Listen mode.
Difficulty: Amateur Detective
Have you solved three complete chapters with the 9 item cards laid out at the start of the game? Then take the cards marked with the diamond symbol that you set aside earlier. You can now use these to solve the remaining chapters in the same way.
End of the Game
Once you've solved all 6 chapters, one final challenge remains: put the chapters in the correct order so that the whole story makes sense. Only then have you solved the puzzle and won the game.
Scan the 6 chapter marker tiles one after another in the app's Solve mode, in the order you believe is correct. If it's correct, you've solved the case together! In the epilogue that follows, you'll learn how the story ends.
In the app's main menu, you have the option to listen to the whole story again.
By the way: even though we mention a historical time period and real places, all events and actions are purely fictional.
Item Recognition Tips
If the app has trouble recognizing the game material, try the following:
- Make sure the scanned card or tile is clearly visible to the app and no other game material is visible in the frame.
- Make sure the material is well lit. For example, if you're sitting between the play area and your lamp, shift slightly to the side so you don't cast shadows on the cards.
- Hold the cards and tiles in your hand to scan them, or hold your device very close above them. This can help the camera find the right focus.
