Setup

  1. Place the Up&Down card at the centre of the table.
  2. Remove cards from the deck depending on the number of players:
    • 2 and 3 players, remove two colours.
    • 4 players, remove one colour.
    • 5 and 6 players, play with all the cards.
  3. Shuffle the cards. In front of each player, place 2 face-down cards, side by side, then cover each of them up with a face-up card.
    • These cards make up the "Row".
  4. Deal 4 new cards to all players.
    • These cards make up the "Hand".
  5. The remaining cards make up the draw pile.
  6. Place the first two cards from the draw pile on either side of the Up&Down card, to form two discard piles.
  7. Determine the first player: in the first round, this is the player who obtains the highest total by adding up the two visible cards in their Row. In the event of a tie, pick at random.
  8. The first player of the round places the Up&Down card on the face of their choice (UP or DOWN) and starts the game.

Example: Simon has a Row totalling 9 + 1 = 10, Alex has a Row totalling 8 + 5 = 13, and Thomas has a Row totalling 7 + 2 = 9. Alex has the highest total, so Alex is the first player.

The Up&Down Card

The order in which the cards must be played is set by the Up&Down card:

  • If the card is on the UP side, players must play cards with a value that is greater than or equal to the last card played.
  • If the card is on the DOWN side, players must play cards with a value that is less than or equal to the last card played.

Turns

Players take turns, clockwise.

On your turn, you have two options:

A. Play 1 card

OR

B. Flip the Up&Down card over, draw 2 cards, then replay.

Example: the Up&Down card is on the UP side, Alex plays a Red 8 from his row on the Purple 4 of the discard pile. Since the two colours are different, his turn is over.

A. Play a Card

On your turn, you can either play a card

  • from your Row (face-up card)

OR

  • from your Hand

Place this card on one of the two discard piles. Follow the direction set by the Up&Down card.

If the card you are playing matches the colour of the card you are about to cover, you get a Bonus Action. If not, your turn is over and it is the next player's turn to play.

Bonus Action

If you get a bonus action, you may, if you want, choose one of the 2 following actions:

  • Play another card on the same discard pile, following the normal rules
  • Flip over one of the piles in your Row:
    • If you choose a pile containing 2 cards, the visible card becomes hidden and vice versa.
    • If you choose a single card, simply turn it face up.

You may perform several Bonus Actions back to back!

Example: Simon plays a Green 8 from his hand and places it on the Green 7 from the other discard pile. He is therefore allowed to perform a Bonus Action. He decides to play the GREEN 9 from his row on his previously discarded GREEN 8 which entitles him to another Bonus Action. He then decides to turn over the face-down card underneath his GREEN 9. Simon's turn ends here.

Notes

  • Careful! A face-down card can only be turned over by performing a Bonus Action. If you accidentally turn one of your hidden cards over, replace it with a new card from the draw pile, which you will place face down in your Row.
  • You cannot play a card immediately after turning it over.
  • Cards that are facing down cannot be played.

B. Flip the Up&Down Card Over, Draw 2 Cards, Then Replay

On your turn, you may flip the Up&Down card over then draw 2 cards before playing a card:

  1. Flip the Up&Down card over to change its direction.

Example: if the Up side was visible, flip the card so that the Down side becomes visible. From then on, the cards played will have to be less than or equal to the last card played.

  2. Draw 2 cards.

  3. Continue with action "A. Play a card" (you can play any of your cards - not necessarily one of the two you just drew). It is possible to get a Bonus Action during this action.

Remarques

  • On your turn, if you are unable to perform the "Play a card" action, you have no choice but to complete the "Draw and flip the Up&Down card" action.
  • If you have to draw a card but the draw pile is empty, leave the top card of both discard piles on the table face-up and shuffle all the other discarded cards to form a new draw pile.

End of Round

The round ends when a player's hand OR row is empty after they've played their turn (after any potential bonus actions).

All other players will then proceed to counting their points: first, they tally the value of the cards in their Hand, then they tally the value of the cards in their Row, including those facing down.

The greater of the two totals is their score for this round!

Example: Alex sets off the end of the round by getting rid of all the cards in his hand. The other players count their points: there are 4 points in Simon's row, and 18 points in his hand. His score is the greatest of the two; so his score is 18 points.

Simon's Row: 2 + 2 = 4. Simon's Hand: 2 + 6 + 10 = 18.

Then, the player who set off the end of the round adds up all the cards that are still in their possession: if the total is strictly lower than that of all the other players, they will not score any points for this round. Otherwise, they will double their score.

Example: Alex has ended the round. He only has cards left in his Row, adding up to 8 points. He has the lowest number of points (Simon has 18 points and Thomas 12), therefore he does not score any points on this round!

Alex's Row: 6 + 2 = 8.

If Simon had managed to get rid of the 10 in his hand, he would have scored 8 points and Alex's would have scored 8 x 2 = 16 points because then he would not have gathered the lowest number of points.

New Round

Write down the scores of each player, then start a new round with a new setup. The first player who begins the round (by choosing the side of the Up&Down card) is the one who has the most points (in case of a tie, the first player is the one with the highest score in their Row and if it is still a tie, the first player is picked randomly).

End of the Game

The game ends after the third round.

The player with the lowest score wins the game! In case of a tie, the player who scored the lowest number of points in the last round wins the game.

Variants

You can play more rounds for longer games!

For more strategic games, play until one player reaches or exceeds 50 points (30 points for 2 players) at the end of a round.
