What is the difference between in play, ready and active?

In play means face up in the play area, exhausted or not. Ready means upright (not exhausted). Active means a ready card in the surroundings, along the way, within reach of the testing Ranger, or in that Ranger's player area, plus the ready cards within reach of another Ranger whose card you are interacting with. A ready card is not always active.
