Do I have to discard cards for approach icons to perform a test?
The designer confirmed the icons are optional and the rulebook describes committing.
No. You only have to commit at least one energy of the test's aspect. Discarding cards with matching approach icons is optional; if you commit a card you add all its matching icons. Discarding is not playing, so it costs no energy, and cards are discarded as soon as they are committed. Icons on equipped gear do not count.
