Components
- 100 Category cards
- 10 Character cards
Setup
- Shuffle the category cards and place them in the center of the table with the Top 10 side (the word list) facing down.
- Each player takes a character card and places it on the table in front of them, with the side showing 4 hearts facing up (3 hearts for shorter games). The hearts show how many times a player may be wrong before being eliminated.
How to Play
É TOP!? is played over several rounds. At the start of each round, draw a card from the bottom of the category deck and place it in the center of the table, category side up. Do not look at the Top 10 list on the back of the card.
The youngest player goes first, and play continues clockwise. On your turn, you may pass or answer. If you pass, you can no longer take part in the round. To answer, name an item you believe is on the Top 10 on the back of the card. Once you answer, any player may contest your answer if they think it isn't on the card.
Example: for the category "Most produced fruits in the world," you might say "Apple is top!" or "Lemon is top!"
If no player contests your answer, the player to your left must give a different answer from the ones already given, or pass. Play continues around the table until an answer is contested. This means a player may have to answer more than once in the same round (always one answer at a time).
The category card shows the category on the front, and the Top 10 word list on the back.
Contesting an Answer
Any player who has not yet passed may contest another player's answer. If you don't believe a player's answer is on the card's Top 10, say "That's not top!" If several players contest the same answer, the first one to say "That's not top!" becomes the challenger. The challenger picks up the category card and checks the Top 10 on the back.
ONLY THE CHALLENGER MAY READ THE BACK OF THE CARD!
If the contested answer is listed in the card's Top 10, the challenge fails. The challenger loses a heart and must rotate their character card clockwise, so the number of hearts left shows at the top of the card. Place the category card back in the center of the table, category side up, so no other player can see the answers on the Top 10. The challenger takes no further part in the round, and play continues clockwise starting with the player to the left of the contested player.
If the contested answer is NOT listed in the card's Top 10, the challenge succeeds. The contested player loses a heart, rotating their character card clockwise. The round ends, and the challenger takes the category card and places it in front of themselves.
The round also ends if every player except one passes. In that case, the remaining player takes the category card and places it in front of themselves.
To start a new round, draw a card from the bottom of the category deck and place it in the center of the table, category side up. The first player is the one to the left of whoever took the category card in the previous round.
Being Eliminated
If you lose your last heart, flip your character card over. You are out of the game and can no longer answer or contest answers until the match ends.
Victory
The winner is the first player to collect four category cards (three for shorter games), or the only player not to be eliminated.
Additional Rules
- If a player gives an answer that another player has already given, the others should simply point out the mistake without contesting it.
- Some category cards may have more than 10 possible answers, because of tied answers in the same position. Tied answers are separated by a comma (,).
- Some answers have synonyms. In that case, they're separated by a slash (/). Synonyms do not count as different answers.
- If the challenger isn't sure whether the contested answer is right or wrong, they should ask the other players' opinion. Example: "Karen said Lord of the Rings, but the answer is The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Do you think that's the same thing?" It's up to the players to decide, but we encourage you to be lenient with close guesses — intent matters more than exactness. Some common mismatches you should allow: Russia/USSR, United Kingdom/England, Harry Potter/Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
- That said, if it isn't on the list, the answer is wrong, even if a player cites another source.
