  • 1 adventurer
  • 25 gemstones (12 yellow, 8 green, 5 red ones)
  • 6 temple blocks
  • 74 cards
  • 10 tiles
  • 1 overview card
  • 1 hourglass
  • 1 little bag
  • Set of game instructions

Aim of the Game

Each problem solved will be rewarded with precious gold from the jungle. After three rounds, whoever is able to collect the most gold wins the game.

Preparation of the Game

gemstones inside bag, adventurer and tiles in center of table, get remaining material ready

Put all the gemstones in the little bag and place the adventurer in the center of the table. The ten tiles are arranged face down in a circle around the adventurer.

Shuffle the cards and put them face down in a pile. Get the six temple blocks, the overview card and the hourglass ready to use.

How to Play

Play in a clockwise direction. The bravest player starts. If you cannot agree the youngest player starts. They are the first treasure hunter to go on an expedition.

The Treasure Hunter

treasure hunter = place bag, overview card, pile of cards and temple blocks in front of them

The treasure hunter takes the bag with the gemstones, the overview card, the pile of cards and the six temple stones and keeps them in front of him. During their expedition the player will try to pull as many gemstones as possible out of the bag.

  • The treasure hunter may not look inside the bag when pulling gemstones out of it.
  • The color of the gemstones indicates how may problems the treasure hunter must solve.
  • The expedition can only last as long at it takes for the hourglass to run through.

The Jungle Guardians

left hand neighbor = jungle guardian

The next player in a clockwise direction is the jungle guardian, who takes the hourglass.

The Treasure Hunting Starts

treasure hunter pulls out gemstone, jungle guardian turns round hourglass

As soon as the first treasure hunter has pulled out the first gemstone, the guardian turns the hourglass around and the hunting starts. The guardian hides the hourglass behind their hands so that it can't be seen by the treasure hunter. The gemstone pulled out of the bag is kept in front of the treasure hunter.

Which Gemstone Has Been Pulled Out of the Bag?

yellow gemstone = no problem

  • A yellow one? Lucky you! You don't have to solve anything.

green gemstone = one problem

  • A green gemstone? You quickly have to solve a problem! Put the gemstone in front of you. Then uncover the top card of the pile in the center of the table and solve the problem shown.

red gemstone = two problems

  • A red gemstone? Oh dear! You have to solve two problems. Keep the gemstone in front of you and uncover the top card of the pile in the center of the table. Solve the first problem. When you have solved it, uncover a second card and solve this problem as well.

Hint: Thanks to the overview card you can see at a glance how many problems you have to solve according to which color.

The Problems

problems:

There are five different kinds of problems to solve. The number on the sack of gold indicates how much gold a problem is worth.

Cast a Gemstone in the Air (= 1x gold)

cast gemstone in the air

Take the gemstone you just pulled out in one hand. Cast it into the air (4 to 8 inches high) and catch it again. If you don't catch it, try again. Then you put the gemstone back in front of you.

Construct a Temple (= 2x gold)

construct temple

With the six temple blocks, construct the temple shown on the card. As soon as you finish, the other players confirm with a short "okay" that the construction is right. Then place the six blocks in front of you again.

Search for an Item of Equipment or an Animal from the Jungle (= 2x gold)

search for item of equipment or jungle animal

If the card shows an item of equipment or a jungle animal, search for the corresponding tile in the center of the table. Look at the tiles one by one. If you find the right tile, leave it there face up. The rest of the tiles remain covered.

Watch out: If during your turn you have to search once more for the same item or animal, you are really lucky as you have already solved the problem.

Complete the Mask of the Guardian (= 3x gold)

complete guardian mask

Search in the little bag for three gemstones which match with the mask of the guardian and place them on the corresponding marks on the card. You can look inside the bag while searching. Make sure you keep these gemstones apart from the gemstones you had before.

Watch out: If, which is very rare, the three gemstones searched for are no longer in the bag, you are unlucky and your expedition has failed.

Catch the Adventurer (= 1x gold)

snatch for adventurer

This problem involves all the players as they can all win this card and thus the gold.

As soon as the card showing the adventurer has been uncovered, each player tries to snatch first for the adventurer in the middle. Whoever succeeds, immediately gets the card and keeps it in front of them together with other cards they might already have. The adventurer is placed back into the center.

The Treasure Hunting Goes on as Long as ...

treasure hunter shouts "Stop!", uncovered cards = reward, two yellow gemstones = one card from pile

  • ... the treasure hunter shouts "Stop"! Before pulling out a new gemstone of the bag, the treasure hunter can voluntarily finish the expedition by shouting "Stop!!" and leaving the jungle in time.

As a reward they get all the cards face up in front of them.

They then count how many yellow gemstones they collected during the expedition: For each two yellow gemstone collected they draw a card from the pile and pile the cards they have won up in front of them.

Example: Bastian shouts "Stop!" before the hourglass has run through. There are two cards and three yellow gemstones in front of him. For two of the yellow gemstones he can take one card from the pile. The third gemstone doesn't bring anything. So Bastian has won three cards in this round.

jungle guardian shouts "Stop!": sand in hourglass has slipped through, treasure hunter misses out

  • ... the jungle guardian shouts "Stop!" As the last grain has slipped through the hourglass, the jungle guardian shouts "stop!" and shows the hourglass to everybody.

The treasure hunter has taken too long to cross the jungle and their expedition has failed.

As a punishment, they have to put all the cards they won in this round back into the bottom of the pile.

Next Player

next player

Then the next player goes on expedition. Return all gemstones back into the bag.

Pass all of the equipment which includes the bag, the card pile, the overview card, the temple blocks and the hourglass on to the next player in a clockwise direction. Uncovered tiles in the middle are covered up again. The previous jungle guardian is now the new treasure hunter.

End of the Game

each player three times treasure hunter = end, most gold = winner

The game ends as soon as each player has been treasure hunter three times. The players count the gold on their cards. Children who can not yet count may be helped by another player.

The one who collected the most gold, wins the game. In the event of a draw there are various winners.

Editor's note: the English section above ends the tie-breaker here. The German, French, Dutch and Italian sections of the same booklet add a first tie-breaker before that: "In the event of a draw the player who has the most cards in front of them wins. If there is also a draw here, these players win together." (German: "Bei Gleichstand gewinnt der Spieler, der mehr Karten vor sich liegen hat. Gibt es auch hier einen Gleichstand, gewinnen diese Spieler gemeinsam.")

Variation for Younger Treasure Hunters

In this variation, it is not the gold on the cards but the number of cards collected which is added up at the end. Whoever has the most cards, wins the game. In the event of a draw there are various winners.
