Setup

  • Prepare the Drakkar using the 5 Drakkar cards that show the same illustration on front and back. Shuffle the island cards and place 3 of them at random, face down, at one side of the table. The double percussionist card (red and yellow) is not used in this game mode.
  • Separate the 3 lookout cards. Shuffle the voyage deck (cards with the Drakkar Tum Tum logo on the back) and divide it into 4 face-down piles. Shuffle one lookout into each of the first 3 piles and shuffle those piles separately. Stack the three piles with lookouts on top of the fourth pile to form the draw pile.
  • Deal 3 cards to each player (4 cards for 2 players).

How to Play

  • The player with the best voice is the starting player and begins singing the song at a steady rhythm:

    Drakkar ··· TUM ··· TUM ··· ¡TUM!

  • The other players sing along together, following the rhythm. The game begins the third time the song is sung, and nobody may change the rhythm or stop singing.

Turn

  • At the exact moment the last "Tum" is sung, the starting player must play one card from their hand onto one of the three cards that form the central section of the Drakkar. Then they must draw a card from the voyage deck.
  • The game continues with the next player in clockwise order, and so on.

Rowers

  • Rowers are the most basic card in the game. They have no effect and cannot be used to cover dangers.

Dangers

  • Dangers have a red sea in the background and can be used to cover any card except other dangers.
  • Each danger in the Drakkar changes the melody, removing one "Tum" from the song and reducing the time each player has on their turn.
  • The danger cards are Goblins, Kraken and Dragon.
  • Example: If one of the cards in the central section of the Drakkar has a danger, the song changes to "Drakkar Tum Tum".

Defence

  • Defence cards are used to cover the dangers of the Drakkar. When played on a danger, a defence card changes the song by recovering a lost "Tum".
  • Defences can be played on any card in the game, except on the Dragon, which can only be defeated by a Crossbow.
  • Careful! There are few crossbows in the game!
  • The rulebook's illustration shows Warriors and Crossbows used against the Kraken and Goblins, and only Crossbows ("¡Solo Ballestas!") used against the Dragon.

Whirlpools!

  • Whirlpools cannot be played on dangers, and whenever one is played, the turn order is reversed.
  • In a two-player game, the player who plays a whirlpool plays another turn.

Lookouts

  • Lookouts are always searching for islands and can only be played when all the cards in the central section of the Drakkar are of the same clan (colour).
  • As soon as a lookout is played, the players stop singing and reveal an island.

Island in Sight!

  • The players reveal an island card and check whether any ability is activated.
  • Then all the cards played on the Drakkar are discarded, leaving it as it was in the setup.
  • The players begin singing again and the game continues following turn order.

Out of Rhythm

When a player plays a card out of rhythm or on another player's turn:

  1. The players stop singing.
  2. The player who made the mistake may leave the card played on the Drakkar, but they may not draw a new card, thereby reducing the limit of their hand.
  3. The game continues with the next player in turn order.

End of Game

The players lose the game:

  • If there are only Dangers in the Drakkar.
  • If the voyage deck runs out of cards and they have not yet found three islands.
  • If a player runs out of cards in their hand because they played out of rhythm or out of turn.

The players win the game:

  • If they manage to reveal 3 islands before the voyage deck runs out of cards.

Island Abilities

The abilities of some islands are clarified and completed below:

  • Whirlpool Island. When the bow and stern are swapped, the song changes to "Tum Tum Tum Drakkar" and a card is played on the word Drakkar.
  • Winter Island. Place the recovered warriors on top of the voyage deck and do not shuffle it.
  • Inhospitable Island. When reducing the hand limit, if you have more than two cards, discard them of your choice.

Variant: The Clans

  • During setup, replace the grey percussionist card with the double red/yellow percussionist card, with the colour of your choice face up.
  • In this game, the lookout can only be played if all the cards in the Drakkar are the colour of the percussionist.
  • When an island is revealed, turn the percussionist card over to show its other side and colour.
