Object

Be the first player to escape from the cave with the Dragon's golden eggs.

Batteries

Insert batteries: Loosen the screw on the battery compartment, located on the underside of the Dragon, and remove the door. Insert 3 AA-size batteries (alkaline recommended), making sure to align the + and - symbols with the markings in the plastic. Replace the door and tighten the screw.

Caution: to avoid battery leakage

  1. Be sure to insert the batteries correctly and always follow the game and battery manufacturers' instructions;
  2. Do not mix old and new batteries, or alkaline, standard (carbon-zinc), or rechargeable (nickel-cadmium) batteries;
  3. Always remove weak or dead batteries from the product.

Assembly and Setup

  • Apply one numbered label to each side of the die. Then apply two matching character labels, one label per side, to each of the 4 explorer pawns as shown in Figure 1.
  • Place the gameboard on a level playing surface.
  • Attach the Dragon neck and tail to the body as shown in Figure 2. Then place the Dragon in the center of the gameboard. Insert the 2 tabs on the bottom of the Dragon into the holes in the gameboard and slide to secure it into place.
  • Each player chooses an explorer pawn and places it on the Cave Entrance space.
  • Place a jewel on each of the gameboard spaces marked with a small circle, making sure to match the jewel's color with the circle's color. Then place the golden eggs on the egg space in front of the Dragon.
  • Slide the ON/OFF switch on the Dragon's chest to the ON position. Now prepare to enter the Dragon's cave.

Gameplay

Roll the die. The player with the highest roll goes first. Play then passes to the left.

On Your Turn do the following in order:

  1. Roll the die and move your pawn.
  2. Follow the board space instructions, if any.
  3. Activate the Dragon (only if you rolled a green 3 or 5).

1. Roll the die and move your pawn

  • You may move in either direction.
  • You must move the full amount rolled (except at the Cave Entrance and at the egg space). But you will learn more about that later.
  • More than one pawn may share a space.
  • You cannot climb the steps leading up to the Dragon until you have collected a jewel of each color. Only then can you unlock this route. See Taking the Golden Eggs below.

Taking a Jewel or the Golden Eggs from a Space or Another Player

You land on a space with a jewel; or on a space with a pawn that has a jewel on it...

  • If you don't have a jewel on your pawn, you may pick up or take this one and put it on your pawn.
  • If you do have a jewel on your pawn, leave this one where it is.
  • If you've already collected a jewel of this color, you don't need this one. Just leave it where it is.

You land on a space with the golden eggs; or on a space with a pawn that has the golden eggs on it...

  • Take them and put them on your pawn. If you have a jewel on your pawn, set the jewel on your pawn's space, then take the golden eggs.

IMPORTANT: Once the eggs are on the open path, they're fair game for all players - even those who haven't collected any jewels yet! Now any player who reaches the Cave Entrance with them wins the game!

2. Follow the board space instructions

IMPORTANT NOTE: You can never carry more than one item at a time. And, since you need to reach the Cave Entrance with a jewel of each color, you cannot pick up or take a jewel if you have already collected one of that color.

  • Move to a Jewel: You may move your pawn to any space with a jewel on it. If you DO NOT have a jewel on your pawn, you may pick this one up. If you DO have a jewel on your pawn, or have already collected a jewel of this color, leave this one here.
  • Take a Jewel from Another Player: You may take a jewel from another player. If you DO NOT have a jewel on your pawn, take a jewel from the top of another player's pawn and place it onto yours. Do not move your pawn. Jewels already removed from the cave cannot be taken and you cannot take one if you have already collected one of the same color. NOTE: Landing on this space only applies to jewels. It does not allow you to take the golden eggs!
  • Roll Again: Roll and move again. NOTE: If you reached this space by rolling a green 3 or 5, activate the Dragon first, roll and move again. See Activate the Dragon, below.
  • Enter Hidden Passage: You may move your pawn directly to the passage exit across the cave. Follow the footsteps back onto the path. See Figure 3.
  • Take the Eggs from Another Player: Regardless of the jewels you've collected, you may take the golden eggs from the top of another player's pawn and move them onto yours. If you are carrying a jewel when you land on this space, place the jewel on your pawn's space and then take the golden eggs. Now head directly to the Cave Entrance to win.

3. Activate the Dragon

Whenever you roll a green 3 or 5, you must activate the Dragon! Press the spine on the Dragon's back, as shown in Figure 4, and stand back! Any jewel knocked from a player's pawn is lost. Place the knocked jewel onto the pawn's space. Now you'll have to go and find another one. You can pick this one up again, but you'll have to move off this space first and come back for the jewel on a different turn. If a pawn is accidentally knocked over by the Dragon, just stand it up again on its space.

REMEMBER: You activate the Dragon after you have moved and completed any space instructions, except if you landed on a Roll Again space by rolling a green 3 or 5. In this case, activate the Dragon, then continue your turn by rolling and moving again.

Escaping with the Jewels

Once you have a jewel on your pawn, try to get back to the Cave Entrance. (You do not need to reach this space by exact count.) If your jewel gets knocked off or taken along the way, you must go find another one. If you get your jewel to the Cave Entrance, take it and set it in front of you. Great Job! Now start your quest for the other color jewel.

REMEMBER: You can never carry more than one item at a time. And, since you need one of each color jewel to unlock the steps leading to the Dragon, you cannot pick up or take a second jewel of the same color.

Taking the Golden Eggs

After you've reached the Cave Entrance twice, once with each color jewel, quickly make your way to the steps leading to the Dragon. Leave the jewels in front of you for the time being. But don't put them too far away, you'll need them shortly. If you are the first player to reach the steps, stop (even if you have moves left). Now place your two jewels on the steps as shown in Figure 5. Passage onto the steps is now blocked. No other explorer can follow you. If you have moves left, finish the movement; if not, wait to move on until your next turn. When you reach the egg space (you do not need to reach this space by exact count), do the following:

  • Place the golden eggs on top of your pawn.
  • Immediately follow the slide back to the path, and stop.

On your next turn, start making your way back to the Cave Entrance. But hurry! Once you have taken the golden eggs away from the Dragon, any player can try to take them from you and escape. Even if a player has not collected a jewel of each color, or any jewels at all, he/she can still take the golden eggs and win. All they have to do is be the first player to reach the Cave Entrance with the golden eggs. The race is on!

IMPORTANT: Only the first player to reach the steps, after collecting two jewels, can climb up to the Dragon. All other players must try to take the golden eggs once they have been taken from the Dragon.

Winning

Get the Dragon's golden eggs to the Cave Entrance and win!

Troubleshooting

  • If the Dragon's neck sections separate, reattach them by inserting the pegs into the holes and snapping into place. There are numbers on the bottom of each section to help identify their order. (The sections go in ascending order from the head back.) When reattaching the neck sections make sure to line up the spines. See Figure 6.
  • If the Dragon malfunctions, slide the ON/OFF switch to OFF and back to ON.
  • If the problem continues, remove and reinsert the batteries or replace with new ones.

Storage

  • Detach the Dragon's neck and remove its body from the gameboard.
  • Return all contents to the box and close the lid for easy storage.
