- 1 First Player token
- 65 Food tiles
- 44 Challenge tiles
Ages 7+. 2-4 players. 20 minutes.
Object of the Game
Earn the most points by strategically filling in a grid with Food tiles. The ingredients on a line or a column of Food tiles must meet the conditions indicated on the corresponding Challenge tiles to earn you points.
Setup
Shuffle the Challenge tiles together and give 4 to each player. Players choose which side they want to play with and place the tiles in a line in the order of their choice. Each player then receives 4 new Challenge tiles. They place them in a column so that their 8 Challenge tiles form the axis of a 4 x 4 grid. Unused Challenge tiles are placed back in the box.
IMPORTANT: A Challenge tile illustrates the conditions to be fulfilled by the ingredients illustrated on the 4 Food tiles that will line up next to (as a line) or below (as a column) that Challenge tile. A line or column fulfilling the conditions of their corresponding Challenge tile will earn you the points indicated on the Challenge tile (on the wooden crate), at the end of the game. Each Challenge tile is double sided with an easier side and a harder side.
Shuffle the Food tiles together and place them in a pile in the center of the table, face down.
Turn over the first 5 Food tiles and place them next to the pile, face up.
How to Play
Turns
The last player to have gone to the Farmer's Market will be the first player. They take the First Player token.
The game is then played in clockwise turns.
The way players take their turns depends on the number of players:
- In a 4 player game each player takes turns choosing one tile from the line of Food tiles.
- In a 3 player game, the first player chooses one tile for themself and then chooses a second tile to place back in the box. The second player then chooses their tile and then the third player chooses their tile.
- In a 2 player game, the first player chooses one tile for themself and one tile to be placed back in the box. The second player does the same.
A Food tile must be placed on an empty space in the grid at the intersection of 2 Challenge tiles. Once it has been placed on the grid, it cannot be moved.
The 5th Food tile always remains in the center of the table for the next round.
The last player to take their turn becomes the first player to take their turn in the next round and grabs the First Player token.
Turn over 4 new tiles from the pile and place them next to the last Food tile from the previous round. A new round can start.
End of the Game
When all players have placed their 16th Food tile on their grid, it is time for scoring.
Each player writes down the points they have won for each line and column of their grid, if they met the conditions required on the Challenge tiles.
If the conditions on a Challenge tile are not met, remove that tile. You will not earn any points for that tile.
Example of scoring for a player at the end of the game:
- Line 1: 7 similar ingredients = 0 points.
- Line 2: A total of 5 ingredients = 11 points.
- Line 3: 1 point per Bread = 5 points.
- Line 4: 6 different ingredients = 5 points.
- Column 1: A majority of Carrots = 4 points.
- Column 2: 2 Corns and 1 Carrot = 6 points.
- Column 3: No Cheese, Milk or Corn = 8 points.
- Column 4: No Cheese = 4 points.
- Total = 43 points.
The player with the most points wins the game.
In the event of a tie, the winner is the player who has met the conditions of most of their Challenge tiles. If there is still a tie, the winner is the player who has met the condition of the Challenge tile worth the most points. If there is still a tie, the players share the victory.
Young Shopper Game Mode
To play with younger children, do not use the Challenge tiles. The goal is to build a 4x4 grid with the highest majority of any 1 Ingredient per line and per column.
Place 3 Food tiles face up on the table and after each player's turn, replace the Food tile that has been taken with a new Food tile. Players always have 3 Food tiles to choose from.
At the end of the game, look at each column and each line individually and give 1 point for each ingredient that is in the majority in its line or column. If there is a tie between several ingredients, choose only one to count for points.
The player with the most points is the winner.
Example: a line with 3 Eggs, 2 Carrots and 2 Milk cartons is worth 3 points because there are 3 Eggs in the majority. In the illustrated example a player scores 3 points, 3 points, 3 points, and 5 points on the four lines, and 3 points, 4 points, 4 points, and 3 points on the four columns, for a total of 28 points.
The 7 Types of Challenges
Below are the 7 types of Challenges and how to score the numbers indicated on the wooden crates:
- Exact count of one ingredient: Each illustrated ingredient must be in the line or column of this type of Challenge exactly as many times as the number shown by the X above it. Other ingredients may also be present but will not be counted.
- Forbidden ingredient: Each illustrated ingredient must not be present in the line or column of this type of Challenge.
- Exact count of an ingredient of your choice: The ingredient of your choice must be in the line or column of this type of Challenge exactly as many times as the number shown in the circle. Other ingredients may also be present but will not be counted.
- Exact total ingredient count: The total number of ingredients present in the line or column of this type of Challenge must be the exact number shown in the circle. The ingredients can be a mix of any type.
- One of each ingredient: Each of the 6 ingredients must be present at least once in the line or column of this Challenge.
- Majority ingredient: The ingredient shown must be the majority in the line or column of this type of Challenge.
- Points per ingredient or set: Earn the points indicated on the wooden crate for each ingredient or set of ingredients illustrated on the tile. These ingredients or sets of ingredients must be present on the line or column of the Challenge tile, and sets do not necessarily have to be on the same Food tile. Ingredients can only be counted in one set.
