Components
This DOMINION® expansion contains 156 new cards, which are assigned to the base game or to the expansion Intrigue.
Base game: 7 new Kingdom cards = 77 cards (incl. placeholder cards)
Intrigue: 7 new Kingdom cards = 79 cards (incl. placeholder cards)
The new cards are each meant to replace cards from the base game or from Intrigue (see the card overview on p. 5). Of course, all cards can also be played with any combination of other expansions.
The component overview also labels: Placeholder (14 x) and blank cards (5 x).
The cards in the overview are reproduced under "Card overview" and "Card overview – further explanations" below.
Setup
Sort the cards and put them into the box insert according to sorting aid 1. If you already own the old base game and/or the expansion Intrigue, you can replace some of the cards from them. For this, use sorting aids 2 and 3 and integrate the new cards of this expansion into your games. You can then keep the replaced cards in this box, since you can of course continue to use them if needed.
To play you need a DOMINION® base game or the base card set (recommended with at least one further expansion). Place all base cards (COPPER, SILVER, GOLD (+ PLATINUM if applicable), ESTATE, DUCHY, PROVINCE (+ COLONY if applicable), as well as the Curse cards and the Trash card) in the center of the table as usual.
Note: The Kingdom card MÜHLE (Mill) comes with 12 cards instead of 10. If you use them in the game, place the following number of cards in the center of the table:
With 3 or more players: 12 cards
With 2 players: 8 cards
Recommended kingdom sets (10-card sets)
The new cards are printed in red in the lists. In this translation they are set in bold. In the original, the cards of the expansion Intrigue are additionally underlined; this underlining is not carried over here.

New rules
The base game rules apply with the following changes and additions:
Counting cards
At any time you may count the number of cards in your draw pile (without looking at their faces), as well as the cards in all supply piles. You may not count or look through your discard pile (unless the instruction on a card allows it), nor the draw or discard piles of your opponents.
Looking at the trash
All players may look at the cards in the trash at any time.
Looking at cards
Every player may look at all cards that are currently in play. Cards set aside (unless the instruction on a card says they are set aside face down) are likewise open for all players to see.
Card order in discard piles and the trash
When players, because of an instruction on a card, may do something with their discard pile and/or the trash, the order of the cards in them does not need to be kept. However, the top card of every discard pile must always be openly visible to all players.
Combined Kingdom cards
Cards that belong to several types (recognisable by two or more terms at the bottom, such as ACTION – VICTORY – TREASURE etc.) are called combined Kingdom cards. For all purposes they have the function of all the card types given. So an instruction that covers all Action cards also covers the MÜHLE, which is a combined Action and Victory card. As an Action card it is used in the corresponding phase of the turn, and it also gives victory points when points are counted. If the MÜHLE is revealed by the PATROUILLE, for example, it is taken into hand as a combined Treasure and Victory card.
Discarding cards vs. putting cards on the discard pile
Cards that are gained during a turn and placed directly on the discard pile are not considered "discarded" – i.e. cards such as the TUNNEL (from Hinterlands), which are activated by "discarding" a card, do not come into play here.
Shuffling cards
If you must draw more cards than you currently have in your draw pile, you first draw all the cards and place them face down on the table (without looking at them first). Then you shuffle your discard pile and draw the remaining cards. This matters, for example, when the promo card GELDVERSTECK is in play.
New instructions on Action cards
Choose one: The player must choose exactly one of the listed instructions and carry it out – as far as possible. He may also choose an instruction that he cannot, or only partially can, carry out. The instructions not chosen have no effect for this turn. If the card is played again later in the game, the player is of course free to make a different choice.
When a choice gives you + X (for example with HÖFLINGE), it is recommended to slide the corresponding card(s) slightly out over the play area to keep better track of them.
Card overview
This expansion contains 7 new Kingdom cards each for the DOMINION® base game and the expansion Intrigue. They replace some cards of the first editions and thus offer new, exciting game rounds and combinations.
The replaced cards of the 1st editions naturally remain playable.
Base game
The card texts are given in the order of the card overview; costs are in brackets.
Händlerin (3, Action)
- 1 card, + 1 Action. If you play a Silver for the first time this turn: + 1 coin.
Vasall (3, Action)
- 2 coins. Put the top card of your draw pile into the discard pile. If it is an Action card, you may play it.
Vorbotin (3, Action)
- 1 card, + 1 Action. Look through your discard pile. You may put one card from it on top of your draw pile.
Wilddiebin (4, Action)
- 1 card, + 1 Action, + 1 coin. Discard 1 card from your hand for each empty supply pile.
Banditin (5, Action – Attack) Gain a Gold from the supply. Each other player reveals the top 2 cards of his draw pile, trashes one revealed Treasure card of his choice – except Copper – and discards the rest.
Torwächterin (5, Action)
- 1 card, + 1 Action. Look at the top 2 cards of your draw pile. Trash and/or discard as many of them as you like. Put the remaining cards back on your draw pile in any order.
Töpferei (6, Action) Take a card from the supply costing up to 5 coins into your hand. Put a card from your hand on top of your draw pile.
Intrigue
Herumtreiberin (2, Action)
- 1 Action. Choose one: Trash an Action card from the supply, or take an Action card from the trash.
Diplomatin (4, Action – Reaction)
- 2 cards. If you have 5 or fewer cards in hand after drawing: + 2 Actions. When another player plays an Attack card and you have at least 5 cards in hand, you may reveal this card from your hand. If you do: draw 2 cards, then discard 3 cards.
Geheimgang (4, Action)
- 2 cards, + 1 Action. Put a card from your hand into any position in your draw pile.
Mühle (4, Action – Victory)
- 1 card, + 1 Action. You may discard 2 cards from your hand. If you do: + 2 coins. As a Victory card: 1 Victory point.
Austausch (5, Action – Attack) Trash a card from your hand. Then gain a card from the supply costing up to 2 coins more than the trashed card. If the gained card is an Action or Treasure card, put it on top of your draw pile. If it is a Victory card, each other player gains a Curse from the supply.
Höflinge (5, Action) Reveal a card from your hand. For each card type it has (Action, Attack ...), choose a different option:
- 1 Action
- 1 Buy
- 3 coins, or gain a Gold from the supply.
Patrouille (5, Action)
- 3 cards. Reveal the top 4 cards of your draw pile. Take all revealed Victory and Curse cards into your hand. Put the remaining cards back on your draw pile in any order.
Replaced cards
These cards replace the following cards of the 1st edition of the base game: Holzfäller, Kanzler, Dieb, Festmahl, Spion, Abenteurer.
These cards replace the following cards of the 1st edition of the expansion Intrigue: Geheimkammer, Große Halle, Kupferschmied, Saboteur, Späher, Tribut.
Card overview – further explanations
Note: In the overview the cards are sorted by their costs. The base game cards are listed first, then those of Intrigue.
Base game cards
Händlerin: You draw 1 card and gain + 1 Action. If you have not yet played a Silver this turn before playing this HÄNDLERIN, you gain + 1 coin for the first Silver you play afterwards. For each further Silver played you gain no additional bonus. If you have played several HÄNDLERINNEN, you gain + 1 coin per HÄNDLERIN.
Vasall: If the revealed card is an Action card (including any combined ones), you may play it immediately. If you play it, you place it in your play area and carry out its instructions at once. You need no additional Action for this. Playing the Action card also does not use up any free or additional Action that you have already accumulated by playing other cards.
Vorbotin: You draw 1 card and gain + 1 Action. Look at your discard pile. You may choose one card from it and place it on top of your draw pile. Return the remaining cards (or all of them) to the discard pile in any order. If your discard pile is empty, nothing happens.
Wilddiebin: You draw 1 card, gain + 1 Action and + 1 coin. Then count how many supply piles (Curse, Treasure, Victory and Action cards, and where applicable Ruins etc.) are already empty. If no pile is empty, you do not discard any cards from your hand. For each empty pile, you discard 1 card from your hand, and so on. If you do not have as many cards in hand as there are empty supply piles, you discard as many cards as you can.
Banditin: First you gain a Gold from the supply and place it on your discard pile. Then each other player – beginning with your left-hand neighbour – reveals the top two cards of his draw pile. If a player reveals two Treasure cards (including any combined ones) other than Copper, he must trash one of them. He may decide for himself which Treasure card he trashes. The other Treasure card is discarded – just like all other cards. If a player reveals a Treasure card other than Copper together with another card (for example a Copper or any Action card), that Treasure card is trashed. The other revealed card is discarded.
Torwächterin: You draw 1 card and gain + 1 Action. Then you look at the top 2 cards of your draw pile. You may trash both cards, discard both cards, or put them back on your draw pile in any order. You may also trash one and discard one, trash one and put the other back on your draw pile, or discard one and put the other back.
Töpferei: Take a card from the supply that costs at most 5 coins at this point. You may not spend additional coins to take a more expensive card. Apart from coins, the card may not have any additional costs. For example, you may not take a card with the potion symbol (from Alchemy) or the Empires cost symbol (from Empires) in its costs. You take the gained card directly into your hand. Then you put any card from your hand (this can be the card just gained or another one) on top of your draw pile.
Herumtreiberin: The card you trash or take from the trash must include the type ACTION, i.e. it can also be a combined Action card (for example MÜHLE). Gained cards are put on the discard pile – unless the card says otherwise. If a card is trashed that has a special effect when trashed, that effect takes place.
Intrigue cards
Diplomatin: This card is an Action and Reaction card. If it is played as an Action in the action phase, you draw 2 cards. If you then have 5 or fewer cards in hand, you also gain + 2 Actions.
If another player plays an Attack card and you have 5 or more cards in hand at that moment, you may reveal this card from your hand before the played Attack is carried out. If you do so, you take this DIPLOMATIN back into your hand, draw 2 cards and then discard 3 cards (this may include this DIPLOMATIN). If you still have 5 or more cards and a DIPLOMATIN in hand, you may reveal the DIPLOMATIN again – and repeat this as often as you like while the condition of 5 or more cards in hand is met. Only then is the Attack carried out. If you have several Reaction cards in hand with which you can react to the playing of an Attack card, you may reveal them one after another in any order.
Geheimgang: You draw 2 cards and gain + 1 Action. Then you take any card from your hand (including, if applicable, one you have just drawn) and put it into any position in your draw pile. You may put it on top, on the bottom, or somewhere in the middle. You may count the cards in your draw pile, but not look at them. If there are no cards in your draw pile, the card put back becomes the only card in your draw pile.
Mühle: This card is a combined Action and Victory card. As a Victory card it gives 1 Victory point when points are counted. If you play the MÜHLE as an Action card, you draw 1 card and gain + 1 Action. You may discard 2 cards from your hand. If you do so, you gain + 2 coins. If you do not (for example because you do not have enough cards in hand), you gain nothing. Only if you have no more than one card in hand may you discard exactly one card, but you gain no coins for it.
Austausch: First trash a card from your hand. Then take a card from the supply that costs at most 2 coins more than the trashed card. A card costs at most 2 more only if its remaining costs (for example the Empires cost symbol or the Alchemy potion symbol) are equal to or lower. If the card taken is an Action and/or Treasure card, place it on top of your draw pile. Otherwise place it on the discard pile. If the card taken is a Victory card, each other player – beginning with your left-hand neighbour – takes a Curse. If the card taken is a Victory card as well as an Action or Treasure card (for example MÜHLE), place it on top of your draw pile and each other player must take a Curse.
Höflinge: Reveal a card from your hand. Then count the types the card belongs to – i.e. ACTION, COIN, REACTION, ATTACK, VICTORY, CURSE etc. For each type the card belongs to, choose one of the four options given. You may not choose any option twice.
For example, if you reveal a PATROUILLE (ACTION), you may choose one option; if you reveal a KARAWANENWÄCHTER from Adventures (ACTION – DURATION – REACTION), you may choose 3 different options. If you choose the Gold, you place it on the discard pile. If you cannot reveal a card from your hand, you gain nothing.
Patrouille: First draw 3 cards. Then reveal the top 4 cards of your draw pile. You take all revealed Victory cards (including any combined ones) and Curses into your hand. Put the remaining cards back on your draw pile in any order.
Example
-
Oskar plays HÖFLINGE and reveals the MÜHLE from his hand. This card has two types (ACTION – VICTORY). He may therefore choose two of the options and chooses + 1 Action and a Gold, which he places on his discard pile.
-
Then Oskar plays the MÜHLE, draws a card and gets + 1 Action. He discards no cards, so he also gets no + 2 coins.
-
Then Oskar plays the Austausch. Natalie reveals a DIPLOMATIN from her hand (6 cards in hand). She takes the DIPLOMATIN back into her hand, draws 2 cards and then discards 3 cards from her hand. Afterwards Natalie still has 5 cards in hand. She decides to reveal the DIPLOMATIN again. She takes it back into her hand, draws 2 cards and discards 3 cards. Then she has only 4 cards in hand and may not reveal the DIPLOMATIN again.
-
Then Oskar trashes an Estate from his hand and takes a MÜHLE. Since it is an Action card, he places it on top of his draw pile. Since the MÜHLE is also a Victory card, each other player takes a Curse and places it on his discard pile.
