Year One Rules

The Year One cards are an optional module for Distilled and replace the first round of the game, meaning you'll start in round 2. They are designed to be used with the base game or any of the expansions.

  • During player setup, shuffle the 15 cards and randomly deal 3 to each player.
  • Choose to keep one of the Year One cards when choosing your distiller identity, and discard the others to the box.
  • Collect any alcohol/basic market cards shown on the chosen Year One card, alongside a Vodka/Moonshine spirit label, and the money and spirit points shown. [The rules card illustrates this with two example cards, one marked with a red cross and one with a green tick.]
  • If the Year One card grants you a discount on an ingredient, distillery upgrade, or item, you may purchase the card from the premium market, paying the usual cost minus the discount. Follow turn order to resolve any contested choices.
  • Once all players have chosen and completed their setup, in reverse turn order place your Vodka/Moonshine label on a spirit label bonus spot and take the bonus as usual.
  • Advance the round marker to round 2 and continue the game as usual. Distiller identities with a start of round ability will gain this from round 2 onwards.

The card's first line credits David Cunningham for the module's original idea and design. Credits are not transcribed.

Prestigious Distillery Upgrades

The Prestigious cards are distillery upgrades from this pack. Each card below lists its printed icons, its money cost, and its spirit points (SP), followed by the text printed on the card. The card icons are printed without names. Where an icon is named here (grain, plant, fruit, wood or clay barrel), the name is inferred from the base game's sugar and barrel types, and the yellow-and-blue cluster icon is described rather than named. Every card carries the Prestigious badge in its corner. The photographs show no rule text of any kind beyond the printed flavour text, so the card-by-card text below is that flavour text only.

Our First Advancement

  • Icons: yellow-and-blue cluster icon; faded spirit label (appears to read "Moonshine", not fully legible).
  • Cost: 4 money. Spirit points: 3 SP.

"Our first achievement was selling moonshine to the local fisherman. They pay in cash and say they have influence with the islands, but I'm warned that they're reselling. If they are pirates, there will be a reckoning."

Tasting Notes

  • Icons: grain; faded spirit label (appears to read "Moonshine", not fully legible).
  • Cost: 4 money. Spirit points: 3 SP.

"After selling moonshine at a local classical music festival, we found a patron who promised to connect us with local performers, composers, and instrument-builders. Finding partners is our key to success!"

Into a New Era

  • Icons: plant; faded spirit label (appears to read "Moonshine", not fully legible).
  • Cost: 4 money. Spirit points: 2 SP.

"Good income in our first year, but great landmarks. Our "Maker of Fire" moonshine sold out, and we found coconuts on the center of a local island."

Getting Out of Debt

  • Icons: fruit; faded spirit label (appears to read "Moonshine", not fully legible).
  • Cost: 4 money. Spirit points: 1 SP.

"An architecture firm next door came by — turns out they're working on the Archbishop's cathedral. Priests drink moonshine? Seems like a virtue to us!"

The Break of Day

  • Icons: wood barrel with a red "-3" discount tag; faded spirit label (appears to read "Moonshine", not fully legible).
  • Cost: 4 money. Spirit points: 2 SP.

"Our sustainably-made moonshine was such a big seller we had to lower the temperature for a few sold out crowds. But our cooperative community led us to a special crop. That's resilience!"

Trailing Greats

  • Icons: two grain; spirit label: Vodka.
  • Cost: 3 money. Spirit points: 3 SP.

"There's a ranch down the road from us with a fine collection of cattle. An introduction led to a grain supplier, and now we're selling our vodka in San Francisco!"

Ceramics

  • Icons: grain; spirit label: Vodka.
  • Cost: 3 money. Spirit points: 4 SP.

"A staff member is related to a decorative tile artist. Fridays we have open house night: she beautifies our walls; we serve vodka selling her blue tiles as coasters!"

What's That Noise?

  • Icons: plant; spirit label: Vodka.
  • Cost: 3 money. Spirit points: 3 SP.

"We bought a legacy still, thinking it would be a steal. But a few months in, it started making strange noises. The vodka it made was pure gold, but we had to replace it, hopefully sidestepping our first stumble."

The Forest Manager

  • Icons: grain; yellow-and-blue cluster icon; spirit label: Vodka.
  • Cost: 2 money. Spirit points: 4 SP.

"Our part-time distillery worker Emi also works on a local farm. Her boss there manages a forest up north and was able to connect us with some stock grain, despite the bad weather we've had this last year."

1989 Reunion

  • Icons: fruit; spirit label: Vodka.
  • Cost: 3 money. Spirit points: 2 SP.

"[...] old friend at my high [...] on, who now owns a [...] pany. Scored a spot [...] ka tastings at their [...] al exposure is [...] dude!"

The photograph cuts off the left edge of this card, and the text is partly missing. Only the visible words are given; the gaps are marked "[...]" and are not reconstructed.

Home Base

  • Icons: item card with a red "-3" discount tag; spirit label: Vodka.
  • Cost: 3 money. Spirit points: 2 SP.

"Our location in an industrial sector is adjacent to Colony, a tech aerospace company. Finding a connection to specialized equipment or a knowledgeable specialist isn't just a roll of the dice, it's our first deployment!"

The Quiet Year

  • Icons: wood barrel / clay barrel (a choice shown by a slash between the two); spirit label: Vodka.
  • Cost: 2 money. Spirit points: 2 SP.

"Managing distillery setup costs felt like the apocalypse, but we did manage to get our hands on barrel stock that we can shepherd some spirits into. We survive into year[...]"

The photograph cuts off the bottom edge of this card, so the text ends mid-sentence. The remainder is not reconstructed.

Out of Time

  • Icons: plant; yellow-and-blue cluster icon; spirit label: Vodka.
  • Cost: 2 money. Spirit points: 3 SP.

"Our thr[...]"

The photograph cuts off the bottom edge of this card. Only the first word fragment is visible, so the card's text is not transcribed.

An Inventor From the South

  • Icons: partly visible (a device image with a red "-3" discount tag).
  • Cost and spirit points: not visible in the photograph.
  • Text: not visible in the photograph.

Only the title and part of the icon are visible, so this card is listed by title only.

Unidentified card (top edge)

A card at the top edge of the photograph shows only part of its icons, cost and text. Its title is not visible and it is not transcribed.

Not all of the pack's Prestigious cards appear in the photographs. See the Table of Contents disclosure above.
