The game consists of 5 dice, each with 6 different dinosaurs. Five of these are herbivores (plant eaters) and have numbers and values of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. One is Tyrannosaurus Rex, a carnivore (meat eater) and has a number of 3, but no value.

The object of the game is to be the player with the highest score over 150. Any number of people may play. The oldest player goes first (these are dinosaurs!).

Each turn consists of a maximum of 3 rolls per player. A player may choose to stop after the first or second roll, but cannot roll more than three times.

On his turn, a player rolls all five Dino Dice. For EACH 3 (Tyrannosaurus Rex or Rex) showing, one herbivore is 'eaten' (removed from play) for the duration of that player's turn. The remaining dice are then grouped into 'herds'. A 'herd' consists of two or more dinosaurs of the same type (value), and you may have more than one 'herd'. You may also keep single dice, but no bonus is given for these: they are scored at face value only. Rexes cannot form herds, unless 5 are rolled on a single roll.

Herds score points as follows:

  • Herd of 2 = face value + 5 points bonus
  • Herd of 3 = face value + 15 points bonus
  • Herd of 4 = face value + 30 points bonus
  • Herd of 5 (including Rex) = 75 points bonus (disregard face value)

NOTE: This is the only time Rex scores points.

A player may record the score of his first or second roll and pass the dice to the next player, or reroll any or all of the dice remaining in play, including any Rexes. The dice 'eaten' by the Rex may not be rolled again. All dice not 'eaten' are considered in play, even those that have already been grouped into a herd.

Example: A player has chosen to keep two 2's and one 6 on the first roll, then rolled an additional 6 and a 4 on the second roll. The player now has the option of:

a) taking the score for the two herds (2's and 6's) and the single 4, ending his turn with 30 points; b) keeping one herd (probably the 6's), and rerolling the 2's and the 4; c) keeping the herd and the 4, and rerolling the 2's; or d) rerolling only the 4.

If one or more Rexes (3) show on any roll, one herbivore die must be removed for each (limited to the number of herbivore dice in play, even if it must be taken from an already established herd. Only those dice remaining in play at the end of a player's turn may be counted. Except in the case of a herd of 5, the Rexes always count as 0.

When one player reaches a score of 150 or more, each of the other players has one additional turn in which to try to achieve a higher score. The player with the highest score after this additional turn is the winner.
