Preparing to play
Before playing for the first time, remove all parts carefully from the punched board.
Insert the four supports into the four corners of the bottom part of the box and place the game board on top of it.
Distribute the imp chips with the picture side facing up into the empty slots in the game board.
Then lay the leaves on top of it in such fashion that the game board is completely covered with leaves, right into the corners. All the imps must be covered up.
Then place the rumpus giants on the leaves in the four corners.
Shuffle the search cards well and place the deck face up near to the players.
Each of you takes a magic wand and you keep the hourglass ready.
Cooperative version of the game: How to play
Everyone joins in together to try finding as many imps as possible. To begin with, look at the search card on top. You must now all join in together to find the imp depicted there under the leaves.
Can the game begin? Then hold your magic wand with the tip pointing down, quickly turn over the sleep hourglass and at the same time say out loud: "Spiders' hair and toads of deep, all the giants fall asleep!"
Get going with the search! The sleeping spell works as long as the sand is running through the hourglass. Now everyone must try to move the leaves cautiously at the same time using the magic wand in order to see where the wanted imp is hidden. Remember to also look under the leaves on which the giants are standing. You are allowed to carefully push the giants and the leaves aside. But if the giants fall over or a leaf falls down, the sleeping spell is broken!
You've found the imp you were looking for? Then take a quick look at the sleep hourglass.
A) Is the hourglass still running? Fine! Then you have lured this imp out of its hiding place in time! Take the search card from the stack and place it down in front of you facing up. The imp chip stays on the game board. A new search for imps begins.
B) Time has run out? Or you have caused a giant to fall over or a leaf to flutter down? Then your search for imps comes to an immediate end and that imp must unfortunately remain in its hiding place. The search card is taken out of the game. A new search for imps begins.
When a new search for imps begins cover up all the imps on the board with leaves, stand the giants up again and put the leaves which have fallen down back onto the game board. Then look at the new search card.
Are you ready to go? Then turn the hourglass around quickly.
End of game and winner (cooperative version)
The game ends when the stack of search cards has been used up. Now count up the imps you have found. If you have found fewer than eight imps, the rumpus giants win. If there are exactly eight imps found, it's a tie. If you have found more than eight imps you all win together!
Game with individual scoring: How to play
Each player tries to find as many imps as possible on his own. The players take turns to play in a clockwise direction, beginning with the smallest player. If two or four of you are playing, you play with 16 search cards. If there are three players, please take only 15 search cards.
When it's your turn: First look at the top search card. You may start searching for the imp depicted on it in a moment. Can the game begin? Then hold your magic wand with the tip pointing down. One of the other players quickly turns the sleep hourglass around and says aloud: "Spiders' hair and toads of deep, all the giants fall asleep!"
Now you can start searching. The giants will sleep as long as the hourglass is running. Now try to shift the leaves cautiously aside to see where the imp you are looking for is hiding. Remember to also look under the leaves on which the giants are standing. You are allowed to carefully push the giants and the leaves aside.
While you are searching the other players keep a lookout for the hourglass and tell you immediately when it has run out.
You've found the imp you were looking for? Fine! Then you have lured that imp out of its hiding place in time! Take the search card from the stack and place it down in front of you, facing up. Then cover all the imps with leaves again and carefully turn the box 90 degrees (around one corner of the box). It is then the next player's turn.

Take the search card from the stack and place it aside, facing down. Then cover all the imps with leaves again and carefully turn the box 90 degrees (around one corner of the box). End of game and winner (individual scoring)
The game ends when the stack of search cards has been used up. Now count up the imps you have found. The one who has found the most imps is the winner! In case of a tie there are several winners.
Note: the printed cooperative text says "a leave falls down" in one place; "leaf" is used here.
You want it to be more difficult?
The game is too much easy for you? In both versions of the game it will become more complex if you place a giant in the centre of the board with the other three around it. Try it out!
