Dark Mirror Figures

Cut out the following figures and glue the front and back sides of each to match on a piece of cardboard. Insert each finished figure into one black base. For this use the bases of the dragon, of the dark mage "Varkur" and of the two Wardraks.

The finished figures are the dark mirror images of your heroes. Set them up next to the game board during setup. You will learn in good time, on one of the legend cards, when these figures are needed.

If you do not want to make the figures, use instead the unneeded counterpart of your hero (if you play with Yaza, take the figure of Barz as her dark mirror image). Place these figures in the black bases as well, so that you can tell them apart while playing.

The four dark mirror figures are:

  • Dark Mirror Image Takuri Guardian
  • Dark Mirror Image Ice Demon
  • Dark Mirror Image Steppe Nomad
  • Dark Mirror Image Rune Mistress

Legend Card A1

It was quiet in Andor. The people went about their tasks. But suddenly, as if from nothing, a small, brightly glowing flame appeared in the Wachsamen Wald. The Keepers of the Tree of Songs sensed the dark presence that emanated from it. Which magical powers were behind this? They sent falcons in all directions to find heroes who could stand up to this dark power.

This legend can only be played with the Magische Helden.

First carry out the instructions on the checklist. Replace the coloured willpower discs on the hero boards with the black discs. Place the coloured discs next to your hero boards. Then additionally prepare the following material:

  • 3 Farmer tokens (Bauernplättchen), 4 Rubble tokens (Geröllplättchen, value arbitrary), face down and mixed; 3 Healing Herbs (Heilkräuter) and 6 Rune Stones (Runensteine).
  • The material from the expansion Magische Helden, where the 4 Minus Strength tokens (Minus-Stärkeplättchen) are placed face down and mixed.
  • 4 "Dark Mirror Image" figures (Figuren "Dunkles Spiegelbild"). These are found on page 2 of the PDF that you downloaded together with this legend (see Dark Mirror Figures above). Place these figures next to the game board.

This legend consists of 19 cards: A1, A2, A3, C1, C2, N, 4 "Hero Task" cards (Heldenauftrag), 4 "The Dark Mirror" cards (Der dunkle Spiegel), 1 "Bannfeuer" card, 1 "Choranat's Ban" card (Choranats Bann), 1 "Play Harder" card (Schwerer spielen), and one large legend card each for "The Ban Circle" (Der Bannkreis) and "The Strength of the Dark Mirrors" (Die Stärke der dunklen Spiegel).

Legend Card A2

Place the Bannfeuer (Ban Fire) on field 53. The field can be entered without danger. Lay the card "Der Bannkreis" (The Ban Circle) face up next to the game board. Mix all 4 hero crests (Heldenwappen) and distribute them face down onto the grey crest fields of the card, so that the crest fields with fire background are visible. The texts on the fields are initially ignored. Important: Even in a game with 2 or 3 heroes, all 4 crests are distributed.

Numerous creatures appeared near the flame. It seemed as though they had sprung from it.

Place Gors on fields 26, 37, 47, 55 and 57, Skrale on fields 27, 42, 49, 59 and 66, and Trolls on fields 44, 60 and 69. [Hard-mode symbol: a black storm cloud. See the card "Play Harder" below.]

It had gone around that four unusual heroes had followed the call of the Keepers and gathered in the tavern: a Rune Mistress, an Ice Demon, a steppe nomad from the East, and a Takuri Guardian from Tulgor. The Andorians viewed them with suspicion. The heroes knew that they first had to win the trust of the inhabitants.

Place the hero figures on field 72. The player who can perform the best magic trick places his time stone on the rooster in the sunrise field.

Continue reading on legend card A3.

Legend Card A3

Place 1 Farmer token (Bauernplättchen) on field 52. Place star markers on C and N of the legend track.

All heroes receive their card "Hero Task" (Heldenauftrag). Each reads it aloud line by line and carries out the instructions described on it. Then continue reading here.

Task (Aufgabe): Each hero must have fulfilled his Hero Task before the storyteller reaches "N". The heroes must defend the castle.

Each hero starts with 2 strength points. The hero group receives 3 gold.

The hero whose time stone lies on the rooster in the sunrise field begins the first day.

Note: The game variants "The Ban Circle of Choranat" (Der Bannkreis von Choranat) and "Moon Berries" (Die Mondbeeren) from the expansion Magische Helden, and the mini-expansion "The Magic of Choranat" (Die Magie von Choranat), cannot be used in this legend.

For an additional challenge, now continue reading on the card "Play Harder" (Schwerer spielen).

Legend Card C1

A guardian excitedly approached one of the heroes. "We found something in the archives," he cried, waving the parchment in his hand wildly. "That fire... it is the Bannfeuer, which burns at the centre of the Ban Circle of Choranat. The circle itself is a mystery. But it seems there is a direct connection to you. You are not here by chance. Be careful! You and your deeds stand in direct connection with the Ban Circle."

Place the Bannfeuer (Ban Fire) from the game board onto the Ban Circle of the card of the same name, in the upper left quarter. From now on the legible crest effect of the quarter on which the Bannfeuer stands is always active. The Bannfeuer moves one field clockwise after each victory over a creature. Place a star marker on field 80 as a reminder. If the fire reaches a field with a face-down crest, that crest is turned face up.

Important: If in a game with 2 or 3 heroes the crest of a non-playing hero is turned face up, it remains on the grey crest field until the end of the game. Additionally place the dark mirror figure of this hero on the crest.

Now turn face up the crest of the quarter on which the Bannfeuer stands.

Continue reading on legend card C2.

Legend Card C2

The heroes felt that something dark and threatening was trying to gain power over them. Soon, they sensed, they would have to withstand a hard test. What had the Keepers said? "You will soon have to face your demons."

Read the card "Bannfeuer" and then lay it face up next to the Ban Circle. Each hero must fulfil one of the tasks. Each task can be fulfilled only once.

Important: Only a hero whose crest is face up can fulfil a task.

Legend goal: The legend is won when the storyteller reaches the letter "N" on the legend track and...

  • the castle has been defended, and...
  • each hero has fulfilled his Hero Task, and...
  • each hero has fulfilled a task of the card "Bannfeuer".

Legend Card N

The legend has a good ending if...

  • all dark mirror figures have been removed from the Ban Circle, and...
  • each hero has fulfilled his Hero Task, and...
  • each hero has fulfilled a task of the card "Bannfeuer", and...
  • the castle has been defended.

Despite bleak prospects the heroes had managed to free themselves from the spell of Choranat. Even though it was still not clear what connection the consuming flame had to them, they had succeeded in turning its power to good and to their own advantage. The experience of confronting their own dark mirror image would keep them awake many a sleepless night.

The legend has a bad ending if...

  • not all dark mirror figures have been removed from the Ban Circle, or...
  • not each hero has fulfilled his Hero Task, or...
  • not each hero has fulfilled a task of the card "Bannfeuer", or...
  • the castle has not been defended.

Hero Task: Ice Demon (Heldenauftrag Eis-Dämon)

Ever since the Ice Demon could remember, people had been afraid of him. He had heard that farmers wanted to fetch the water reserves stored at the Abandoned Tower (Verlassener Turm). The terrain there was rough. Perhaps they would think differently of him if he helped them.

Place 1 Drinking Hose (Trinkschlauch) on field 83. Place 1 Farmer token each on fields 24 and 40.

Task (Aufgabe): Bring 2 farmers safely to field 83. [Hard-mode symbol.]

After the task has been fulfilled...

  • the Ice Demon may hand in the Drinking Hose from field 83 and in return place an Ice Bolt (Eisblitz) on his hero board.
  • he may also place Ice Bolts on the strength point tracks of other heroes. For the other heroes the same rules apply as for him.
  • the Farmer tokens may now be brought to the castle (field 0) by the usual rules.

The farmers, previously terrified, were grateful. Without his help they would never have reached the tower. It was a good feeling, and the Ice Demon knew that his Ice Bolts could help his friends as well.

Hero Task: Takuri Guardian (Heldenauftrag Takuri-Hüterin)

High up in the mountains grew especially nourishing healing herbs. On foot they were almost unreachable for the Andorians. The Guardian offered to send her takuri.

Place 2 face-down Healing Herbs (Heilkräuter) on field 84.

Task (Aufgabe): All healing herbs must lie on your field or on your hero board. [Hard-mode symbol.]

If the takuri is on field 84, has at least 2 strength points and is moved by you to another field, it may take 1 Healing Herb with it. Important: Immediately after the takuri has been moved with the healing herb, its strength point marker is set back by 1 field.

After the task has been fulfilled...

  • the Healing Herbs may be used according to the usual rules.
  • you receive 1 "Takuri Feather" (Takuri-Feder). You may use it once in the game. On that day, the overtime (Überstunden) of all heroes costs no willpower points. Afterwards the feather is removed from the game.

The fresh mountain air had done the takuri good. Its feathers glistened in a shimmering red light. One of them he gave to his guardian.

Hero Task: Rune Mistress (Heldenauftrag Runenmeisterin)

The rune stones of Andor were very powerful. The Rune Mistress suspected that far more could be done with them. There was only one person who could know more about it: Reka.

Roll a red die (tens) and a hero die (ones) to determine the positions of 3 face-down rune stones. Then roll a red die to determine on which letters of the legend track the remaining 3 rune stones are placed face down (only 1 per letter). They are only rolled into place when the storyteller reaches the corresponding letter.

Task (Aufgabe): Find 2 rune stones of the same colour and go with them to Reka's field. [Hard-mode symbol.]

After the task has been fulfilled...

  • a hero who carries a rune stone of the same colour as you may add your strength points to his combat value in combat.
  • and if your rune disc points to a rune stone that you carry on your hero board, you may double your strength points in combat.

Reka's information fitted into the knowledge of the Rune Mistress. Now she could use the connections between the stones for her own purposes.

Hero Task: Steppe Nomad (Heldenauftrag Steppennomade)

The steppe nomad sensed the dark magic. Instinctively he knew that he had to strengthen the effect of his powders. For this he needed moon berries.

Place 1 moon berry (Mondbeere) each on fields 15, 30 and 66. A hero standing on a field with a moon berry may take it. The berries are placed on the area of the hero board on which gold is also placed.

Task (Aufgabe): Bring 3 moon berries to Sabri's field. [Hard-mode symbol.]

After the task has been fulfilled...

  • a hero may hand in a moon berry to be able to use the effect of any powder (even one already used). This costs the hero no die.
  • Sabri moves 3 fields as long as the steppe nomad carries at least one moon berry on his hero board.

The essence of the moon berries could be combined perfectly with the powders. The nomad's use of them seemed safe enough to trust him to his friends as well.

Dark Mirror: Ice Demon (Der dunkle Spiegel des Eis-Dämons)

The Ice Demon suddenly felt as if he were melting. Water ran down him and formed into a shadowy figure: his own form, with a gaze that made one freeze.

Take the figure of your dark mirror image (dunkles Spiegelbild). Place it on field 50. The dark mirror image does not move.

Add your strength points to all Ice Bolts that currently lie on your hero board, on the hero boards of the other players and on the game board. Mark this value according to the instructions on the card "The Strength of the Dark Mirrors" (Die Stärke der dunklen Spiegel).

In combat your dark mirror image has this value in strength points, and as many willpower points as you have at the start of combat. The dark mirror image rolls with the Ice Demon's die once that die's combat value has been determined.

Task (Aufgabe): You must defeat your dark mirror image alone. The Takuri may support you in combat. Once you have defeated your dark mirror image, place its figure on your crest in the Ban Circle. The storyteller does not move.

As soon as all heroes have defeated their dark mirror images and each of the 4 crests has 1 figure on it, read the card "Choranat's Ban".

Dark Mirror: Takuri Guardian (Der dunkle Spiegel der Takuri-Hüterin)

In the flames of her takuri the Guardian suddenly saw a figure flicker up with cruelly glowing eyes: her own figure!

Take the figure of your dark mirror image. Place it on field 62. The dark mirror image does not move.

Add your strength points to the current strength points of the takuri. Mark this value according to the instructions on the card "The Strength of the Dark Mirrors".

In combat your dark mirror image has this value in strength points, and as many willpower points as you have at the start of combat. The Guardian always rolls with both of her dice in combat. The die with the higher value counts for her own combat value; the die with the lower value counts for the combat value of the dark mirror image.

Dark Mirror: Rune Mistress (Der dunkle Spiegel der Runenmeisterin)

The Rune Mistress felt something threatening tugging at her like a storm. It was as if a breathy voice, far away, were drawing her into darkness: her own voice.

Take the figure of your dark mirror image. Place it on field 25. The dark mirror image does not move.

Add your strength points to the current value of the rune disc. Mark this value according to the instructions on the card "The Strength of the Dark Mirrors".

In combat your dark mirror image has this value in strength points, and as many willpower points as you have at the start of combat. The dark mirror image rolls with 1 black die.

Important: If your rune disc points to a rune stone [rune stone icon], you may turn the black die to the opposite side.

Dark Mirror: Steppe Nomad (Der dunkle Spiegel des Steppennomaden)

The steppe nomad sensed a vibration deep in the earth. No, these were not Sabri's steps, but the ominous sound of a voice: his own voice!

Take the figure of your dark mirror image. Place it on field 83. The dark mirror image does not move.

Add your strength points to the number of unused powders (including Sabri's). Mark this value according to the instructions on the card "The Strength of the Dark Mirrors".

In combat your dark mirror image has this value in strength points, and as many willpower points as you have at the start of combat. After you have rolled, turn the die you used for your combat value to the opposite side. The die value now shown counts for your dark mirror image.

Task (Aufgabe): You must defeat your dark mirror image alone. For this combat the fields 61, 64, 65 and 66 count as adjacent to field 83.

Card: Bannfeuer (Ban Fire)

Dark smoke rose from the Bannfeuer into the sky and made the heroes tremble.

The card has four tasks, each shown in a circle:

  1. Defeat a creature alone.
  2. Defeat a creature in 1 combat round. Other heroes may fight together with you.
  3. On one day, make 3 overtime actions (Überstunden) before you end the day. Afterwards you immediately receive 2 strength points.
  4. On one day, empty 2 wells. It may also be the same well twice.

A hero who has fulfilled a task marks it with his coloured wooden disc and moves his crest on the card "The Ban Circle" (Der Bannkreis) to the field with the fire background. From then on the effect in the grey field is active. He then reads the card "The Dark Mirror" (Der dunkle Spiegel) that belongs to his hero.

Card: Choranat's Ban (Choranats Bann)

The heroes sank down exhausted. It had been an eerie experience to fight against their own dark selves. The fire had not been able to draw them into its ban, but it kept blazing in the Ban Circle of Choranat. The heroes knew: they had to tame the fire and wrest the dark mirror images from it. Only then would the Ban Circle disappear again.

Place the Bannfeuer on field 3. Place 1 Rubble token each on fields 1, 10, 14 and 20. These fields can still be entered and passed through. The fire can, however, be tamed only from these fields. Only 1 hero may stand on each field with rubble. The rubble does not need to be removed for this.

Taming works like the action "Fight" (Kämpfen). Add the strength of all dark mirror images (see the card "The Strength of the Dark Mirrors"). This is the strength of the Bannfeuer. It rolls with as many black dice as there are heroes in the group. All values of the black dice are added and counted towards its strength. The sum is the combat value of the Bannfeuer. If the heroes exceed this value, then each time, any one dark mirror figure is removed from the Ban Circle.

Task (Aufgabe): Remove all figures of the dark mirrors from the Ban Circle. As soon as the last figure has been removed, the storyteller moves to "N".

Card: Play Harder (Schwerer spielen)

Lay this card face up next to the game board. Each time you see the hard-mode symbol (a black storm cloud) on a legend card, you can read the harder variants here and decide for each one whether you want to play it. In general the cards for the normal game are read first and the rule supplements for the hard game afterwards.

Card A2: Move the Skral from field 59 to field 61, and the Troll from field 69 to field 68.

Hero Task:

  • Rune Mistress: Find 3 rune stones of different colours and take them to Reka's field.
  • Takuri Guardian: Place 3 Healing Herbs on field 84.
  • Steppe Nomad: Place 1 further moon berry each on fields 22, 49 and 58. Bring all 6 moon berries to Sabri.
  • Ice Demon: Bring 3 farmers to field 83.

Card "The Strength of the Dark Mirrors": The Minus strength tokens remain face down. The printed values have no meaning.

Card: The Ban Circle (Der Bannkreis), Crest Effects

The reverse of the card "The Ban Circle" carries eight shield-shaped effect tokens. Four are orange (fire-coloured) and four are grey. The rules text says that a hero moves his crest onto the field with fire background, and that the effect in the grey field is then active. The source does not print which orange shield pairs with which grey shield; the pairing is by position on the printed sheet.

Orange shields (fire-background fields):

  • Moving costs 1 hour and 1 willpower point per field.
  • Remove a well from the game board immediately after emptying it.
  • Moving costs 2 hours per field.
  • Overtime (Überstunden) is available already from hour 6.

Grey shields (effect fields):

  • Moving costs 1 hour or 1 willpower point per field.
  • For emptying a well you receive 4 willpower points.
  • Moving 2 fields costs 1 hour.
  • Overtime is available only from hour 9.

Card: The Strength of the Dark Mirrors (Die Stärke der dunklen Spiegel)

As soon as a hero has determined the strength of his dark mirror image, he turns over 1 of the 4 Minus strength tokens in his column and places it on the field of the determined value. The difference between the marked value on this card and the token is the strength of the dark mirror image (but never less than 1). [Hard-mode symbol printed at the end of this text.]

The card has four columns, from left to right: Rune Mistress, Ice Demon, Steppe Nomad, Takuri Guardian. Each column has the slots 1 to 10, from top to bottom.
