About the Expansion

Autumn & Winter brings six modules to renew the gaming experience of Demeter and a few bonuses for Varuna.

  1. New species tiles
  2. Autumn
  3. Winter
  4. New objectives
  5. Bonuses for Varuna
  6. Mission Record
  7. Achievements

1. New Species Tiles

The new Species tiles add encyclopedic knowledge (name, size, weight) about the dinosaurs studied in Demeter.

During setup (with or without an expansion), replace the 6 Species tiles of the base game by the new ones.

2. Autumn

Autumn is an expansion for Demeter, therefore you need the base game to play it. Demeter Autumn adds a few rules to the base game.

Research Track

The first time you progress on the Research Track, color one of the 3 starting spaces. The next time you progress on the Research Track, you may color a space adjacent to a colored one (as usual) or you may color another starting space instead.

Pterodactyl

Studying the Pterodactyl earns you 1MP at the end of the game for each different Dinosaur you discovered.

Gallimimus

Studying these 4 Gallimimus earns you 2MP for each grey card you selected during the game.

Pictogram note: the grey card symbol is the grey card type of the base game (the card with a grey square bonus).

Tyrannosaurus rex

Studying this Tyrannosaurus rex earns you 1MP for each yellow card you selected during the game.

Pictogram note: the yellow card symbol is the yellow card type of the base game (the Study card).

Scientists

Recruiting these Scientists in the Tyrannosaurus rex environment makes you score the Objective of your choice, except an Objective you already scored.

Bonus

When you gain this bonus, choose among Recruit a Scientist, Study a Dinosaur, Build an Observation Post or Progress one space on the Research Track. Vous may trigger the ability of the corresponding Building if you built it and if you did not use its ability earlier in the round.

Printed as "Vous may" in the English column of the source. Read as "You may"; the French word is a leftover from the bilingual layout.

Bonus pictogram: the bonus is a grey square box; its choices are colored as Recruit a Scientist (blue), Study a Dinosaur (yellow) and Build an Observation Post (red), as printed in the source.

Objectives scoring

Your Objectives score 0/7/13 MP instead of 0/5/10 MP.

3. Winter

Winter is an expansion for Demeter: you need the base game to play it. This more complex expansion adds new rules and a new strategic option to the game: the upgrades.

Setup

  • Do not remove any card from any deck: a game of Demeter Winter lasts 15 turns.
  • Add the Stegosaurus Species tile (the orange 5 tile) to the 6 Species tiles of the base game.

New Action: Upgrade

When you color a bonus with the upgrade symbol (a green dotted area), circle an upgrade of your choice. You unlocked it for the rest of the game. There are 7 Upgrades but you will be able to unlock a maximum of 5:

1. and 2. Selecting the 5th and the 6th card of a given type

Important: you must unlock the left one before the right one.

5th card: You may select the 5th card of each type (except the grey card): you must have selected 4 cards of the same type before selecting the 5th one.

6th card: You may select the 6th card of each type (except the grey card): you must have selected 5 cards of the same type before selecting the 6th one. Resolve the top action of the card as usual, but the bottom effect is replaced by an endgame bonus (do not color inside of the square box):

  • Double your total Scientists scoring. (blue card with a x2 star)
  • The quality value of your Observation Posts is increased by one in the environments where you entirely build at least one Observation Post. (red card with a +1)
  • Double the scoring of one of your Notebooks. (yellow card with a x2 and a red ribbon)

3. New dinosaur part

From now on, when you gain a black claw symbol, you may color a brown paw symbol instead. This is the only way to discover the Pterodactyls and the Stegosaurus.

Important: if you built the Rover and if you unlocked this Upgrade, you may turn any dinosaur part into a brown paw symbol.

4. More objectives

You may unlock Objectives A+B of the Research track by coloring the square box below.

Important: when you validate a purple Objective symbol in the Diplodocus or Velociraptors environments, you may score any Objective, but you cannot score the same Objective twice, as usual.

5. Rover

Once you built the Rover, you may upgrade it when you gain an action showing the truck symbol or the house symbol. The source gives these two symbols as pictograms only, with no words. This upgrade allows you to turn a "/" symbol into a "+" symbol when Discovering dinosaurs. You may use both Rover abilities in the same action, but you cannot use the same ability twice in the same round, as usual.

Important: this upgrade does not count as a new Building.

6. Advanced Observation Post

This Observation Post makes you score more MP in the Gallimimus environment.

Important: to recruit the rightmost Scientist, you must unlock and build this Observation Post entirely, as usual.

7. Expert Scientists

You may recruit these Scientists in the order of your choice.

Pterodactyls

Each Pterodactyl counts as a dinosaur when calculating your Observation score in the Triceratops and the Tyrannosaurus rex environments.

Stegosaurus

When you study the Stegosaurus, score 2MP for each upgrade you gained (max. 10MP).

Pictogram note: the upgrade symbol is the green upgrade symbol of the Upgrade action.

4. New Objectives

During setup, shuffle the following Objectives with the Objectives of the base game. These Objectives can be played with the base game and all expansions.

  • Number of couples of the same species you discovered. 3-4 scores 5MP; 5+ scores 10MP.
  • Number of completed Notebooks. 2-3 scores 5MP; 4+ scores 10MP.
  • Number of card types you selected exactly 3 times. 2 scores 5MP; 3+ scores 10MP.
  • Number of card types you selected exactly 4 times. 2 scores 5MP; 3 scores 10MP.
  • Number of environments in which you built all Observation Posts and recruited all Scientists. 1-2 scores 5MP; 3+ scores 10MP.
  • Mission Points scored with the 3 other Objectives: score your MP from the 3 other Objectives before calculating this one. 14-24 scores 5MP; 25+ scores 10MP.

The 2 following Objectives can only be played with the Winter expansion:

  • Number of brown paw symbols colored. 4-5 scores 5MP; 6 scores 10MP.
  • Number of Upgrades you unlocked. 3-4 scores 5MP; 5 scores 10MP.

5. Bonuses for Varuna

These new damage-focused Discovery tokens and Objectives increase the replayability of Varuna, but at your own risks!

The two Discovery tokens are marked with the Discovery symbol (a spiral). Their effects:

  • Discovery token marked "x3" and a 7-damage symbol: your submarine takes 7 damages: these damages are reduced by the protection level of your submarine. Gain 3 Discovery symbols at the end of the game.
  • Discovery token marked with a single Discovery symbol: gain 1 Discovery symbol at the end of the game. When calculating your score at the end of the game, ignore the last 3 ticked spaces of your damage track: report on your player sheet the MP corresponding to the ticked space above the topmost damage you ignored.

Important: if your submarine is sunk during the game, you are still eliminated, as usual.

Pictogram note: the damage track is the starburst-symbol area of your Varuna player sheet. The spiral is the Discovery symbol of the Varuna components. The Varuna Objectives are on two two-sided tiles.

The 2 Objective tiles for Varuna are:

  • Number of bonuses triggered with your submarine. Orange side: 5-6 bonuses scores 5MP; 7+ scores 10MP. Grey side: 6-7 bonuses scores 5MP; 8+ scores 10MP.
  • When you activate this Objective, choose to score 5MP or 10MP. Then, your submarine takes the indicated damages: these damages are reduced by the protection level of your submarine. Orange side: 3 damage scores 5MP; 6 damage scores 10MP. Grey side: 5 damage scores 5MP; 8 damage scores 10MP.

Note: the damage values in the last Objective are read from the tile art, because the printed text does not spell them out.

6. Mission Record

The Mission Record helps you to check the quality of your scientific mission for the base game and the Autumn expansion only. It does ot apply to the Winter expansion as you score more MP.

Printed as "does ot apply" in the source. Read as "does not apply".

At the end of the game, read the Mission Record that corresponds to your score to know if your mission was successful or not.

  • 95+: Are you kidding me? You are either born on Demeter or a dinosaure [sic] with a human being costume!
  • 85-94: Demeter has no secrets for you anymore! Your paleontology treaty helped science to make a huge step in understanding Demeter and other exoplanets. As the new supervisor, you will lead the mission to Demeter!
  • 75-84: Results of your mission are brilliant...but this was the least we were expecting from you! You earn the Science medal of Ganymede and you have the permission to return on Demeter as advisor of Dimitri, the supervisor of the colonization.
  • 65-74: Your mission is a success. Information you collected are very helpful to understand Demeter. We will soon be able to launch the first ship to start the colonization.
  • 55-64: Like your friend Ross, you are not the best paleontologist, but you know enough to collect information to prepare human colonization... in a few years, when we will know a bit more about it!
  • 45-54: You heard conversations about a scientific mission, but you ignore everything about it. During the night, you secretly learn a few things about paleontology. They are useful once on Demeter, but your mission will not go further than the kitchen.
  • 35-44: You went out of the baggage hold during the journey and learnt to know the crew. Unfortunately, you are devoured by a raptor immediately after your landing on Demeter!
  • 0-34: Do not lie! You were hidden in the baggage hold and you did not know this ship heading to Demeter was actually a scientific mission? The crew sends you back to Ganymede in a capsule...

7. Achievements

Completing Achievements is a good way to try various and original strategies.

At the beginning of the game, place the back of the rules close to the play area so the Achievement list can be seen by all the players. When you complete an achievement, write down your name and the date of its realisation. Maybe one day you will join the Hall of Fame of Demeter!

The achievement list has a Solo column and a Multi column, which are tick boxes for recording completion.
