Components

90 cards, 1 foam target, and these rules.

Goal of the Game

Players must answer as quickly as possible with TRUE or FALSE by slapping their left or right hand onto the target placed in the middle of the table. The right hand says "TRUE", the left hand says "FALSE".

Setup

1. Introduction. If needed, players tell the other players their first name, last name and age at the start of the game. They also agree on the physical limits of the room or area where they are playing.

2. TRUE and FALSE hands. Using a felt-tip pen, each player draws a smiley face on their right hand. This marked hand is used to answer TRUE. The left hand is used to answer FALSE. Marking the hands lets each player tell their TRUE hand from their FALSE hand at any time, and makes it easier to assign points at the end of each round.

3. Placing the target. The target is placed in the centre of the table, at equal distance from the players.

4. Placing the cards. The 90 cards are shuffled. Each player is dealt 5 cards, and the first player receives 1 additional card, the starting card. Each player forms a face-down draw pile with their cards. The remaining cards are set aside and will not be used during this game.

Playing the Game

The first player is chosen at random and becomes the reader.

The reader does not tap the target (so does not answer TRUE or FALSE). The other players place both hands flat in front of them, at equal distance from the target, and will play to win the card that is read.

1. Reading a sentence. On the first turn, the reader takes the starting card and chooses one of the four sentences on it at random. It is preferable to read the sentence silently first (in one's head), then read it aloud (slowly, for suspense if desired).

As soon as the reading of the sentence is finished, the active players (all players other than the reader) must answer as quickly as possible with TRUE or FALSE by placing the correct hand on the target (or on the hands of the other players who were faster). A pile of hands is then formed. Once a hand has been placed, it is forbidden to remove or change it.

Notes.

  • When the reader reads a sentence in the informal "tu" form (e.g. "Tu es un garçon", "You are a boy"), it concerns each player individually.
  • Many general sentences have only one possible answer. The markings -V- (for TRUE) or -F- (for FALSE) are given on these sentences to avoid any dispute.

2. Scoring. Once all players have placed their hand on the target, the reader looks at the hands and decides:

  • Who was the fastest to answer correctly: that player is given the card that was read. This card is placed in front of the winner, visibly. It has just won them 1 point.
  • Who was the fastest to answer incorrectly: that player permanently discards one of their won cards. If they have not yet won any points, they discard a card from their draw pile instead.
  • The other players neither gain nor lose anything.

If the answer does not seem obvious (remember that it may vary between players), do not hesitate to discuss it together, but do not get angry!

The winner of the round becomes the reader for the next round. They take a card from their draw pile and must then read the sentence preceded by the smiley of the colour of the back of the card they have just won.

Example

Samuel has just read a card with a red back. Charlyne is the fastest to answer correctly, so she wins Samuel's red card and places it beside her. She then takes the first card from her draw pile and reads the sentence preceded by the red smiley.

End of the Game

A game of Déclic!? Family ends as soon as a player gives away or loses the last card of their draw pile.

The winner is the player with the most points (the number of cards won during the game). In case of a tie, a final sentence is read to break the tie between the tied players.

For each new game, we recommend changing the seating of the players so that no routine sets in.
