Game Description
In our game, the players embark on an exciting journey through time to the small gold-mining village of Goldtal in the year 1849. In the role of Sheriff Edward Lawson, they clear up two mysterious murder cases. Are these connected with an extraordinary gold find?
The game contains a virtual part, which requires a mobile device (smartphone or tablet with Android/iOS), as well as the real objects: the traces of a serious crime that have survived to this day.
The players are challenged to solve different kinds of puzzles in order to advance to the next stage.
Game Setup
Preparing the game takes about 30 minutes. Please follow the instructions described below.
General Instructions
- Use a colour printer.
- Use A4 paper in portrait orientation.
- All pages must be printed with identical printer settings. The only exception is that some pages are printed double-sided, and the rest are each printed on a single page.
- Do not use page margins. The printer will then automatically print with the smallest possible margins. This way the printed pages will convey the feeling of a historical document. Depending on your printer model, use the option "Page setup" (set the margins to 0) or "Custom margins".
Pages 5–6 and 12–13 (double-sided printing)
- Set the printer to double-sided printing, option "Bind on long edge".
- Print 4 pages (2 sheets) and cut them out.
All other pages (single-sided printing)
- Print all 11 pages and cut them out.
- Pages 5–10 are not put into an envelope. From the start of the game they are visible (but may only be examined more closely when asked to do so). The remaining game material is put into the envelopes provided for it:
Game Materials and Envelopes
- Print all envelopes.
- Cut out the envelopes, fold them and glue them together.
- The game materials (printed pages 11–19) must be placed into the envelopes according to the instructions shown in the table below:
| Page | Element | Envelope (as printed on the envelope) |
|---|---|---|
| 11 | 6 cards with ingredients | Illustration of a table with a bottle and food items |
| 12–13 | 4 playing cards (double-sided printing) | Illustration of four playing cards |
| 14 | Letter with sun | Inscription "für QB" |
| 15 | Letter with compass | Inscription "Mr. Sanders" |
| 16 | Dartboard with notes | Illustration of a hand holding a dart |
| 17 | Chessboard with notes | Illustration of chess pieces |

Pages Not Transcribed
The PDF's pages 5–10 are printed play materials that players may examine only when asked to, and pages 11–19 are the in-game materials listed in the table above. Pages 20–23 are the envelope templates, which carry only artwork and the inscriptions shown in the table. Their contents are game artwork and puzzle material rather than rules, so they are not transcribed. The gameplay itself runs in the iDventure smartphone app, which the printed instructions do not describe.
