Goal of the Game
The young apprentices of the wizard have been given the task of searching for mysterious symbols. But the old wizard has conjured hidden obstacles along their paths. The winner is the first player to collect 5 symbols.
Setup
Place the game board in the centre of the table. Each player chooses a pawn, and the die is placed beside the board.
Each player starts in their own corner of the labyrinth. If only 2 players are taking part, they must occupy opposite corners. Shuffle the deck of symbol cards well and place it face down beside the board. Then shuffle the obstacle cards and deal them as follows:
- 2 players: 8 cards to each player
- 3 players: 6 cards to each player
- 4 players: 4 cards to each player
Set the remaining obstacle cards aside; they will not take part in the game. Each player takes their cards without showing them to the other players. Now the game can begin.
Playing the Game
Players take turns. The youngest player starts. They turn over the top card of the symbol deck and show it to the others. Now everyone strives to obtain this symbol. To do so, a player must move their pawn onto the board space that shows it. However, a pawn may only move on your turn, according to the result of the die roll.
So, it is your turn and you roll the die. What came up on it?
The die shows a number
Move your pawn the corresponding number of spaces. If you wish, you may remain in place. Movement is only allowed vertically or horizontally (diagonal movement is not allowed). You may change direction during your turn (for example: if the die shows 2, you may move the pawn 1 space horizontally and then 1 space vertically). Before starting to move, you must loudly announce which space you are going to (for example: "I am going to the bat").
While you are moving, the other players look at their cards and search for a way to block you using their obstacle cards. The corners of the obstacle cards show the symbols whose path that card can block.
If a player has the required card, they shout "Simsalabim!" and place the card. Bad luck! You have run into a hidden obstacle! Move your pawn back to your starting corner. You take the card that was played against you, and you may use it against other players in the future. The turn passes to the next player (clockwise).
Did no one manage to stop you?
Lucky you! After you finish your movement, the turn passes to the next player.
Notes:
- Only the obstacle cards of other players can block you. Your own cards have no effect on you.
- A space with the sought-after symbol can only be blocked by another player's pawn; obstacle cards have no effect on it.
- If two players shout "Simsalabim!", the one who shouted first must place their obstacle card.
- The other players may choose not to place their cards, for tactical reasons.
- The corners and the central space are "safe" and cannot be blocked.
Did you reach the symbol you were looking for?
Well done! You receive the symbol card and turn over a new one. If a pawn of another player is already standing on the space of the new symbol, turn over a new card, and put the "unsuccessful" one back on the bottom of the deck.
The die shows "?"
You may demand an obstacle card of your choice from another player. If that player has the card you ask for, they must give it to you. If they do not have that card, you receive nothing. Regardless of the result, you may roll the die again.
The die shows "X"
Move your pawn back to your starting corner.
End of the Game
The game ends when one of the players receives the 5th symbol. That player is the winner.
Game for Two
If only 2 players are taking part, remove from both decks the cards with the following symbols: bird, cat, bat and lightning. Place four of the set-aside cards face down on the corresponding spaces on the game board. Closed spaces are blocked and a pawn may never be placed on them under any circumstances. Otherwise the game is played by the same rules.
