How to Play with an Expansion

Each of the expansions here works in setup exactly like the Executioner expansion in the base game: you choose exactly 1 expansion and shuffle its 6 cards (or 7 cards for "The Mighty Leaders") into the stack of the base game's 18 cards.

Each card from an expansion has a symbol in its lower right corner, so that you can easily tell the cards apart.

Special Points of the Game Flow

Once your skull stack is complete, you no longer take any turns.

With some player counts it can happen that cards remain in your hands or in the graveyard even though the game has already ended.

If you want to play with 4 players, build the skull stacks so that the bottom row has 3 cards, as you know it from the 3-player game.

Expansion: The Poets

Poets enjoy the company of the Lovers – but only of those who are lonely.

Components

6 cards, each with 2 skulls:

  • Poets x6
  • Royals x1
  • Peasants x1
  • Priests x1
  • Lovers x1
  • Criminals x2

Scoring

4 points for each adjacent Lover that is not part of a pair and therefore cannot be scored.

Poets want to be directly next to lonely Lovers. So each Poet next to a single Lover, who is not part of a pair, gives you 4 points.

If an odd number of connected Lovers is present, you must decide before scoring which of them form a pair and which of them stay alone.

Example: The two Lovers on the left side of the third row form a pair. The left Poet in row 2 is adjacent to the pair and to no single Lover, so it gives no points. The rightmost Poet, in row 2, is adjacent to 2 single Lovers and therefore gives 8 points.

Expansion: The Merchants

Merchants appreciate the company of the Peasants. But if Criminals come too close to the precious goods, it can become dangerous.

Components

6 cards, each with 2 skulls:

  • Merchants x5
  • Royals x0
  • Peasants x2
  • Priests x1
  • Lovers x2
  • Criminals x2

Scoring

2 points for each adjacent Peasant.

-2 points for each adjacent Criminal.

You get 2 points for each Peasant that is adjacent to a Merchant, but you also lose 2 points for each Criminal that is directly next to a Merchant.

Example: The Merchant in row 5 gives you 4 points – 2 points for each adjacent Peasant. The Merchant in row 2 gives 2 points, because it is next to a Peasant, but because 2 Criminals are adjacent to it, it also loses 4 points. Here, the two Merchants together would therefore give you 2 points.

Expansion: The Leaders

Leaders enjoy having their supporters around them. The more of them that are crowding in their direct surroundings, the better.

Components

6 cards, each with 2 skulls:

  • Leaders x5
  • Royals x1
  • Peasants x2
  • Priests x1
  • Lovers x2
  • Criminals x1

Note: Skulls are considered connected if they lie adjacent to each other or can be reached through an unbroken connection of one or more cards of the same corresponding skull type.

Scoring

1 point for each connected skull of the given type.

Leaders want to be next to large groups of their supporters. For each skull that matches the skull type of the Leader and that is connected to it by a direct and unbroken path over this symbol, you get 1 point.

Example: The Royal Leader in row 6 gives 1 point, because a Royal is adjacent to it. The Peasant Leader in row 1 gives 2 points, because it is connected to 2 further Peasants. Here, the Leaders together would therefore give you 3 points.

Expansion: The Mighty Leaders

The Mighty Leaders above all tolerate the company of other high-ranking leaders, no matter which kind.

Components

1 card with 2 skulls:

  • Mighty Leaders x2

Setup

Special rule: Shuffle both this card and the 6 cards of the "The Leaders" expansion into the cards of the base game. In this case, one of the graveyard stacks will have 1 card more, so 4 instead of 3. Which one it is does not matter.

Scoring

1 point for each connected leader.

The Mighty Leaders want to be directly next to other leaders. The symbol on the leader does not matter here. For each other leader connected by a direct and unbroken path, you get 1 point. The other Mighty Leader shown on the card also counts.

Example: The Mighty Leaders in rows 3 and 4 each give 5 points: 1 point for each connected other leader, plus the other Mighty Leader. However, neither of them is connected to the Royal Leader in row 6. Here, the two Mighty Leaders would therefore give you 10 points in total.

Solo Expansion: The Relics

You have been given the honourable task of adorning the Bone House of Sedlec with your noble bone artworks. Tinker with your designs … and who knows? Perhaps it will be your artwork that one day becomes a famous relic and brings this chapel very special fame.

Components

6 cards.

  • Front: the relic layout. The six relics are Pillar (Pfeiler), Portal (Ostentorium), Chalice (Kelch), Vault (Gewölbe), Coat of Arms (Wappen) and Chandelier (Kronleuchter).
  • Back: the scoring condition. The six conditions are Murderer of the Nobles (Mörder der Adligen), Tough Love (Strenge Liebe), No Regrets (Keine Reue), Harvest Time (Erntezeit), The Peasants' Revolt (Der Aufstand der Bauern) and Missionaries (Missionare).

Translation note: the card names above are translated from the German printed on the cards. The text of the individual scoring conditions on the card backs is printed in small type on the cards and is not legible in the source PDF, so it is not transcribed here; use the printed cards for those conditions.

Setup

Draw 1 random Relic card. It shows you the layout of your relic in this game. Draw 1 more random Relic card and turn it over, so that it shows the scoring condition. Lay both cards out in front of you. You may return the remaining 4 cards to the box.

Shuffle the 18 cards of the base game. Build the graveyard by laying out 4 face-down stacks as equal in size as possible in a 2x2 grid.

Choose 2 card stacks from the graveyard and turn the top card of each face up. Then lay out 1 of them to begin building your relic. The known stack rules of the base game apply in this solo variant, with a few peculiarities.

Game Flow

In this solo challenge you build 2 things: on the one hand your relic, which has the form shown on the Relic card. On the other hand a skull stack, which is built in a pyramid shape, as in the base game for 2 players. Both will each consist of 9 cards at the end.

Unlike the base game, you have no cards in hand. You place each card directly from the graveyard onto its final place in one of the two building projects. On your turn you can therefore either dig or collect:

Dig: Choose 2 face-down card stacks from the graveyard. Turn the top card of each of the two stacks face up, so that they lie open on the stacks. Then choose 1 of them and place it either in your relic or in the skull stack.

Collect: Choose 1 face-up card in the graveyard and place it either in your relic or in the skull stack.

The Rules of the Stack

The skull stack is built as in the base game. Your relic is built as follows:

The first cards must each be placed on one of the spaces shown in purple on the Relic card. These spaces form the foundation of your relic.

Cards that you later lay out on higher levels of your relic must be supported by every adjacent card beneath them. Sometimes only 1 card lies beneath (instead of 2 as usual).

Cards that cannot receive support from below, because no card lies there, must be placed to the side of at least one card that is already laid out.

End of the Game

The game ends when you have built 9 cards each in the skull stack and in your relic. Score your cards, observing effects that become active before scoring, as well as scoring effects that come into play during scoring.
